"5-Bullet Friday" — 5 Things I've Been Loving, Using, and Reading

Absolutely the best for flying. But which one? The booze, hat, or weird footwear?
Absolutely the best for flying. But which one? The booze, hat, squat, or weird footwear?

Greetings, friends.

Here are some popular links, thoughts, and articles that have appeared in my “5-Bullet Friday” e-mail newsletter, which is free and goes out every Friday.  I cheated in this post and gave you six.

Enjoy!

Article I’m enjoying (and pondering)How Bold Entrepreneurs Are Breaking $1 Million In One-Person Businesses by Elaine Pofeldt for Forbes.com

Clothing I’m loving — Check out Myles’ “everyday shorts.”  I originally got these as a gift from Huckberry, and they are now my go-to shorts for nearly everything. I swim in them (quick drying), I wear them while working at coffee shops, and you can even wear them to a nice dinner if you have decent shoes. Multi-purpose rocks.

My most popular Facebook post recently — Japan’s Michael Jordan of Day Trading. His “one rule” is quite smart, methinks…

A quote that’s on my mind — “People think focus means saying yes to the thing you’ve got to focus on. But that’s not what it means at all. It means saying no to the hundred other good ideas that there are. You have to pick carefully. I’m actually as proud of the things we haven’t done as the things I have done. Innovation is saying no to 1,000 things.” – Steve Jobs

Responses I’ll be practicing (yet again) next week — How to graciously say no to anyone by Austin Kleon. This is worth revisiting constantly.

New footwear, long overdue — I’ve needed Adidas slip-ons for years. No idea why it took me so long to get them. They’re perfect as indoor Japanese-style slippers, or for wearing outside when you don’t want flip-flops killing your toe webbing. I’m typing this on an airplane, where I’m wearing them with socks. #GermanStyle

Would you like to get a very short (five-bullet) e-mail from me every Friday with the five coolest things I’ve found that week?

It might include books, gadgets, albums, articles, new hacks/tricks, and — of course — all sorts of weird stuff I dig up around the world.

These “5-Bullet Friday” emails are only available if you subscribe to my e-mail newsletter.  They will not be on the blog or anywhere else.  This post is just a teaser to entice you to sign up.

Try it out for a week! Unsubscribing is easy, and there’s great stuff coming next Friday. Just submit your email address in the opt-in below (or here) and you’re set.

P.S.  If you haven’t seen this short commencement speech, you’re in for a treat.  Perfect weekend viewing.

Hi Tim,

I see a theme here. I tell you, I like Diary of a Madman, followed with some with some quality time with The Power of Now. This really gets in there and rots things out for me. Love your stuff.

Dude-about the “what you are listening to this week” comment about folks hating it today, you are right, but for the wrong reasons. Why are you fixated on MOR LCD (ie: Lowest Common Denominator) total formulaic shit metal? Listen to Subrosa, Ufomammut, QOTSA, Bong, Electric Wizard, Earth, Gnod, Godflesh, Windhand, Snail, OM, Domovoyd, etc. for example instead. All can easily be checked out on youtube this weekend by you.

Tim, your Cyrus the Great quote was…well…Great! The Army has been doing this for a long long time. The private, desk side talks with the boss are times to voice either question or desention, but when it is time to be in a large forum or (God forbid) in the public eye, we must portray a unified command. Thanks so much for what you do.

The way you think really rocks my world, man! I can see you as being organized in your way of thinking. I really admire your humor. Specially the line, “A quote that’s on my mind”, that you deduced from Steve Jobs’ line, we know that he’s such a successful person, and I believe that this quotation really inspired you and so do I! Keep it up, man!

Curious about Bluebonnet Whey because the price point seems reasonable. I’ve been using a Native Whey Isolate from NZ that is supposedly made just from milk and not a cheese byproduct and it’s much more expensive. Have you had any experience with some of these? [Moderator: link removed]

Tim, I’m a great fan of your 4-hour work week. Come to think of it your slow-carb diet’s pretty damn good too. For the first time in a decade I’m under 200 pounds and still falling.

In my quest for a low-information diet, I don’t read all the emails you send me (!) and when I saw one about investments, I thought who needs investments when you’ve got a muse to fund your life? I thought you had turned native. So, I was really relieved to get your email saying you’re not doing any more of that VC stuff. It feels like you’ve come home. Best decision, you have my support. Thank you.

Bis gleich.

Instead of simply repeating the same old “Five Bullet Friday” subject line each week, why not put in a colon after it, and then add a few hints on what you’re covering?

My guess is you’ll have a lot more people opening up the email.

Tim-First, thanks for your “Never Get Tired of It” podcast. I cannot think of anyone who can engage & draw practical information from people so well.

Second, SO GLAD you’re into Zion’s. I live in nearby St. George, and love this area; straight up otherworldly and jaw-dropping beauty where you wouldn’t expect. I bought a Jeep and a DSLR to really get out there.

Be sure to make the Angel’s Landing hike in Zion’s. Despite hating heights, I had one of the most Zen/Zen-like(?) experiences of my life on that trail. It is an experience everyone should have. Enjoy your time in southern Utah; and if you want some “locals only” sights and info, shoot me a line!

Thanks again!

Hey Tim, I barely graduated high school with a 1.5 GPA and did the only thing I could possibly do to get out of my west Texas town, join the Air Force. It was during my 9 years I was exposed to and fascinated by high achievers, mainly the officers who saw some potential in me and gave me good advice. At 27, on their suggestions, I decided to do something I never thought I’d do, attend college. I had the GI Bill to pay for it and a lifetime of possible regret of not trying and so after 3 years I graduated Cum Laude. I took an entry-level position in real estate at a highly regarded banking/financial institution and got my first exposure to the corporate world. (I must say that it wasn’t a career goal but rather a lack of options once I realized I would not get a call back from the many resumes I sent out). After 3 years in the trenches I made a lateral move to our digital technology side and am now learning how to manage all aspects of our mobile banking app. I am now in an industry that had always fascinated me but I had no clue on how to gain entry into, since my 1.5GPA and Air Force logistics background didn’t quite equate to engineer, programmer or developer. I now get to read and study all aspects of the tech world (bank/fin tech) and grow professionally in the field. I am a very grateful and appreciative of where I now find myself and am so optimistic of the future. 😀

I had first heard about your books awhile back but I was not in the correct mindset to see any usefulness in your words at the time. (I’m a late bloomer in every sense of the word) It was only a couple months ago that I was suggested to your podcast (by a former colleague that now works at Apple) and now I’m a daily listener. My commute into work, Bluetooth headphones while I walk from my parked truck to my desk and while grabbing breakfast/coffee in our cafeterias, to/from meetings, walk to my parked truck at the end of the day and my commute home. I find it incredible that I can directly relate, in some ways, to yourself and your interviewed guests. Just as you say at the start of almost every show, I love how you pick apart and gain insights into who they are and how they operate. I gained an appreciation of learning and self-improvement later in life, and am playing catch up on many key areas but your podcast helps guide me in directions that will help me improve in those weak spots.

I’ve also been intrigued by entrepreneurship which your show and your thinking are so much a part of. I have resources available to me to get a business off the ground (many veterans small business programs) but I am struggling to find a product or service that would be marketable and potentially profitable. Profit is not my ultimate goal but rather something that people could benefit from. (If it also allows me freedom/autonomy/money then that’s always welcomed, duh). Do you have any suggestions that could help in solving such a dilemma? Is my current thinking incorrect? What suggestions could you provide that could better assist my creative process in moving forward with my aspirations of entrepreneurship? Any help is always appreciative.

Keep up the good work brother. You’re truly an inspiration.

Hey Tim,

I am a little nervous writing this comment – I have never left a comment on any social / webpage before 🙂

I just wanted you to know you are doing great things, I love your work and the journey you are on – many people are now on the same journey thanks to your inspiration.

I can empathize with the topics you discuss surrounding depression, anxiety, insomnia and how meditation can access peace – I would highly recommend looking into Eckhart Tolle for some further insights into these area’s and how to transcend them.

In anycase, I am sure you have heard of Eckhart, and I would love for you to try and interview him on your Podcast. I would see this as the world’s ultimate interview between the best rational & logical mind (You) AND the best spiritual & intuitive mind (Eckhart). WOW, that would be good! 🙂

“The secret of life is to die before you die and realise that there is no death” Eckhart Tolle.

All the best and keep up the great work!

Hi Tim, Would like to hear you do something about psychopathy and its roll in Society. Im not talking about murderers and rapists but the strong element of psychopathy in the business, celebrity world etc. I read “The Psychopath Test” by Jon Ronson recently. It changed my life. I had already diagnosed myself as an empath, and I was able to come to some conclusions about how I influence my own life by constantly feeling like a victim. I am actually in the process of “rewiring”, conditioning myself to be more psychopathic, if you will. I suffer from severe anxiety and I have had a noticeable reduction in occurences and intensity. I am not healed by any means but it has helped me to become more functional. Don’t know if you see any congruence in what you write and talk about but it would be interesting.

Hi Tim,

My wife and I have been following the 4 hour body fat loss programme for several years successfully. For me it’s almost 5 years now, I went from 72 to 62kg in the first 3 months and have been thereabouts ever since. Similar results were achieved by my wife 3 years ago down to 48kg. Thank you from both of us! Life changer!

However, this year we moved from a hot to cool climate (Dubai to London) and for my wife, the programme seems to have broken down, her weight is creeping up week on week (measured on the day before the cheat day) slowly but surely. I still have the weekly cycle although a little off my weigh lows.

Any suggestions are very gratefully welcome. Has anyone else found a climate shift affecting fat gain? My wife is considering an alternative fat reduction programme but it looks to me like a material reduction in life quality vis-a-vis the 4 hour body, which makes feel great and we enjoy the cheat day together so much!

Thank you for all the great content

Make sure you’re feeding your dog what dogs are “designed” to eat, even in her kibble–especially in her kibble. Two things you may want to consider: 1) “Taste of the Wild” organic grain-free dry dog food, in several different meat-recipes; 2) book that includes recipes by James Coghlan DVM, “Paleopet: The Real Reason Your Dog or Cat Eats Grass”.

Love those sardines, btw, been eating them for a couple of years.

Should we be looking for “4 Hour Dog Training” in the future?

I work with Rescues in the DFW area and do obedience training. The biggest issue I have and that I see other people having is time. People are busy and the dog is usually one of the first losers when people shuffle their priorities around. Sucks but true.

I’m glad to see you posting about this and hope that it helps other people appreciate how awesome dogs can be. Compared to all of our technology (I’m a software developer) dogs are one of our greatest creations – think about it. We’ve been breeding and training them for centuries. Properly trained they can do things that we wont be able to do with computers for a while yet. And computers won’t ever choose to give you affection and loyalty.

Aloha Tim, this is my #timdog since I don’t Tweet.

Living on Kauai where feral chickens parade along every single road, trail and beach, it is difficult to break a chicken-killing terrier of her habit. How do you out-fun chicken killing?

Kong’s are great. As she got older, our Aussie used to get the kibble too quickly so we added Advanced level: use a Kong with bigger opening on top. 1. Put kibble in. 2. Layer of peanut butter to cover. 3. Take half a milk bone biscuit and push in top.

Hi Tim,

I’m not sure if you’re going to get to read this comment. I love your 5 bullet Fridays but one of your posts really made me feel so very sad and quite angry. In your review of the documentary about Algiers, you wrote about the brutality and torture the French inflicted upon Algerians in their own land. This documentary only begins to shed light on what the French did to the Algerians. What angered and surprised me is when you said the Algerians resorted to ‘terrorism’ in their quest for independence. Please tell me how a people in their own country are resorting to terrorism when they were tortured, raped and traumatised in every way imaginable by outsiders who colonised their lands. Outsiders who forbade them from speaking in their mother tongues, outsiders who stole their land and then made them to labour as workers. Children who were forced to starve and take shelter in the mountains for fear of rape and torture. Please tell me how a country who initially tried to seek independence by political means are resorting to terrorism. Who were lied to and betrayed by the French when certain agreements were made. If outsiders are inflicting this level of physical, emotional and psychological trauma on the people in their own country and take arms and fight back, please tell me how this is deemed to be terrorism. I thought your mind was more open than what I read in that 5 bullet post.

What I’m watching — What We Do In The Shadows. This movie is f*ing hilarious. I think it’s ~95% on Rotten Tomatoes. It chronicles the adventures of four vampire roommates trying to get by in a modern world. Clement and Waititi, creators of the HBO hit series “Flight of the Conchords,” co-wrote, co-directed, and co-star in this hilarious send-up in which an endearingly unhip quartet of friends reveal the details of their nightly routine.

Love all your stuff Tim! You’re the man. I’ve gotten a lot of value out of all your content and I’ve learned a ton from your guests. In particular, your suggestions of developing a morning routine (which currently includes reading/journaling) have been a phenomenal boost to my days. While I haven’t quite gotten to meditating yet, I’m on the path to exploring that as well.

One suggestion I had for a future guest on a podcast is Dan Inosanto. If you don’t know of him, he was one of Bruce Lee’s best friends and students and is not only the most influential martial artist of our time but, his students have gone on to do amazing things in Hollywood (fight choreography for most every action film) as well. He’s approaching 80 but, he still teaches at his Academy in Marina Del Rey, CA and travels up to 40 weekends a year or more spreading the martial arts. He still moves like someone in his 20-30s but, I haven’t seen anyone move like he does in there 20-30s. I think your listeners would not only be inspired by him but also, they’d gain some great insights into health and longevity….. just a thought?

Thanks for all that you do.

I sent you a tweet but I got a recommendation for some tunes. If you do not already know who Dj Shadow is check out “Midnight in Perfect World” great music; and it is REAL hip-hop. Also, you should interview a real underground hip hop head or group that has been in the game for a while like Evidence of Dilated Peoples, or the The Grouch, or The Psycho Realm..That would be super sick wit it! Love you podcast! HMU if you need a co-host or paid servant. Ha ha..Bless Up Homie! I am out. ONE!

Tim – super congrats on securing the rights to The Tim Ferriss Experiment! If you’d like to explore selling your show directly to your audience, may I suggest you check out Zype’s video platform? (spoiler alert: I work there)

We support whatever flavor of monetization you like (subscription, transaction, season passes, ads) and we can even get you on Apple TV, Roku, etc. 🙂

Cheers from a long time listener and first time caller.

Tim, love your podcasts and 5-Bullet Fridays and have filled the time on long drives to the hospital. Jill’s DIY Scientist story is really inspiring and timely. My 12 year old son has cancer and I find myself having to seek the latest treatments and weave together his medical story as only someone this close to it can. Your podcasts including the Dom D’Agostino have brought a new angle to my “research”. Please let me know if you have any other similar content to this that would be useful.

Regards,

Tom

Tim I just want to say thank you again for being so damn cool. I was fortunate enough to meet you this past Thursday in Detroit and I am absolutely blown away by how down to earth and genuine you are.

Your advice you gave to me on reaching out to fitness professionals is being put into place and I am taking action right now to get to my goals.

My email is ben.boudro@gmail.com

If you have any time in your busy day I’d love to be able to hear from you again.

Hey Tim, you’re a very intersting guy, in a way like a modern day polymath, or rennaisance man. I’m 18 years old, don’t have my high school diploma, soon to have my GED, and I’m very lost in terms of what I should do with my life. I have a fairy decent interest in languages, and I think that this is a path I could go about for my life. Do you have any suggestions on what I should do? Where to start? Any advice would sincerely help. Thanks Tim.

– Justin

You forgot to add “legendary” in front of Dan Gable’s name. I think that would have gotten the point across without making the blurb longer. …”Perfect Olympic gold medalist, two time NCAA Champion, and one of the greatest college wrestling coaches. ever.”

Tim,

I love your work. As an Iowa Hawkeye and a fan of wrestling in general, I loved seeing the Gable quote in your 5-Bullet Friday this week. I have another Gable quote for you that I’ve looked to in the past for inspiration. As a bit of context, it was said after Terry Brands lost to Kendall Cross in the finals of the ’96 Olympic Trials (Cross went on to win gold in Atlanta that year as did Terry’s twin brother Tom).

“Terry Brands isn’t crying right now because he spent all that time and didn’t get first. He’s crying because he didn’t put in the time to get first.”

Hey Tim

I know this is totally unrelated but referring to the “4 hour body”,I find it challenging to incorporate the eating “plans” suggested in the book, since I’m a shift worker, where I’m required to work 12 hour night shifts (6pm to 6am).

Any suggestions?

Cheers

Btw: I know what you mean with knowing that you have to have or need something but you delay it again and again until you get it years later and finally enjoy the fun/relief/comfort.

Rock on!

Hey Tim, I am probably your biggest fan in Dubai. I have been listening to your podcasts for a few months. I am meditating almost daily and basically really benefiting from your amazing work so thank you. I just started receiving the 5 bullet Friday email and I love it. I want to ask you to address and discuss sharing/helping others by for example, sharing your blog. Even though we may want to help people, and they need and ask for help at times, our advice is not always welcome. The feeling I usually come out with is why did I do this? Just stay quiet dude and focus your own $#%#.

I will try that back acupuncture mat. As a tall guy 6’5″ I always pull my back muscles when I over do the lat pull downs or back rows. Thoroughly impressed you got to meet those cirque du soleil acrobats who seem to defy logic with their amazing flexibility. Never miss those shows when they’re in town.

I’ve also found that when I work on the core muscles more consistently (abs especially) I don’t get pulled back muscles quite as often. Something I’m sure you’re aware of.

I’m also happy to hear you stopped taking on more investment projects and spending more time with the things you truly love and get the most fulfillment from. We all have to do that, take time to evaluate where we find more satisfaction from and cut out the bs projects and time-wasting things that suck the fun out of our days.

Keep up the great work! If I leave any more comments my girlfriend might get jealous. Haha really admire everything you do Tim. I wish there were more folks like you.

Love the 5-bullet Fridays – lots of excellent stuff to think about/do/read. But I think the Drucker quote is actually “What’s measured gets improved.” It was as much a warning as anything. His point was that if you measure the wrong thing, it will start improving, even if improving it results in an overall bad outcome.

E.g., you notice the correlation “sales people who make more calls make more sales.” So you start measuring the # of calls that sales people make. The result will be that they’ll make more calls (# of calls improves). That will almost certainly happen. But often sales don’t go up, because the calls are now lower quality. That is, the thing you’re measuring is improving, but it’s not the thing you want to actually improve.

He also never said the converse, that you can only manage things you can measure. This is important, because there are lots of important things a good manager pays attention to that aren’t measurable.

Love the podcasts, grateful I found you and all the madness and insight that comes with it.

Always loved science shizzle, and anything to do with human development.

You are the common man in the way you go about these things and get the detail across, but you are the common man in the uncommon situation.

love that, keep up the great work. Happy Friday, Peace out .

PS I think you must have some English ancestry, surely? ;o)

Hi Tim! May we interview you for the new TribeLA magazine, a new arts, cultures and lifestyles publication in Los Angeles. We launch this spring. I am also producing Off the Page again for CBSradio (independently this time). Do you remember you, Seth Godin, Alice Schroeder and a few others were my first interviewees for KNX newsradio back in 2008? You had just bought your home in SF and was full of excitement. I know you have done thousands of interviews and may not remember, but it happened. Thank you! Seth is on board with a few excerpts from “Tribes” and a 10-minute broadcast interview that we will use for the “Off the Page” vignette series. Hope we can speak soon. I saw that you were here recently. Found out too late. Stay great, deborah

Hey Tim – I am grateful for the knowledge and perspectives I’ve acquired from your books, podcasts, and blog. All of these things help facilitate my work to become a more knowledgeable, competent, happy and generally well-rounded human. I thought I would attempt a tiny favor in return; in your most recent 5 Bullet Friday, you referred to the country “Ukraine,” as “the Ukraine,” which is unfortunately, a totally common error. This misnomer is not only inaccurate but fraught with troubling implications, especially when considering the ongoing invasion of Ukraine by Russia. I’m sure if you get to view this comment, you would be interested, so I’m just including a link to an article which explains a little of the history. I hope you get to check this out, and I hope I’m putting the link in the right place.

Thanks and take care.

Tim,

Ty Clark here, buddies with Del Ponter and a number of Summiters:) I have something you might be interested in and would love to send you a copy. I have been working on a film about the man who developed the modern day jump shot in basketball (Kenny Sailors look him up) , we have been fighting to get him inducted into the Hall of Fame– a rediculous uphill battle. I recently wrote a 100 page research paper on the history of the jump shot for the director of the Hall of Fame and am working with Bob Knight and some others to get Kenny (just passed away at 95) inducted. Kenny is a forgotten legend and pioneer with an imcredible story. Would love to send you a copy of the research.

Hi Tim,

“I am often filled with wonder when I see some men demanding the time of others and those from whom they ask it most indulgent. Both of them fix their eyes on the object of the request for time, neither of them on the time itself; just as if what is asked were nothing, what is given, nothing.”

Please let me assure you that I understand any response to this is taking your most precious resource, so hopefully by writing this here others can get a lot out of it as well. I am also hoping to draw you in with a Seneca quote obviously. A bit cheeky I know but if you can answer the following that would be amazing!

1) Do you know the impacts of having yerba mate (Mi adiccion de Agentina!) or green tea whilst fasting? I know you do a strictly water only fast but I find that drinking mate helps me a lot. Just worried about the impact as I want to start moving into slightly longer fasting periods.

2) I fell in love with 4 hour workweek the minute you mentioned my favourite country Argentina. I absolutely love it there because they seem as mental as Aussies (Yes Australian, I don’t swear via text though so all good moderators). I am going back to Argentina for a 2 month (work away agreement yay :D) and was just wondering if, off the top of your head, you had an easily importable product I could take and sell in BA. I was originally intending on making use of the “blue dollar” again but recently that little trick has disappeared. Do you have any other ideas of something I could do to recover some of my flight costs? (the more legal the better obviously!)

3) In your podcast with I thiiiink James Fadiman you mentioned some ill symptoms you get on I think DMT or perhaps moreso interactions with certain ingredients in psychedelics such as ayahuasca (even though I believe you haven’t tried that..yet :D..). I’m just wondering because when I went to Peru for a retreat I stopped drinking after the 3rd ceremony we did due to an ever increasing severity of what I would call “convulsions”. It seemed to be a cumulative effect over the days, each time I drank and In my past experience I am an extreme light weight on any stimulant. The shaman of course told us that everyone “purges” differently but largely due to fear at the time and having received some pretty amazing experiences I was content and stopped drinking. It wasn’t until you mentioned it in your podcast that I started to question just how much danger I may have been in?

4) One idea I had after reading a lot of your stuff and Senecas Shortness of life was to actually include our finite “Time” as another part of a financial portfolio or perhaps just as a decision making tool. As you can understand it can be hard to think long term and whether it is better to do overtime now, or work a second job…or cut back to 3 days a week, quit to start a business, continue on with current job etc etc at any one moment. And considering we all give up part of our freedom to work…to essentially buy freedom…I was wondering if you knew of or had any ideas of creating a calculator to make it a purely logical decision. For example: I know that by doing an extra 2 hours work overtime now that in 5 years time, this effort compounded will result in 4 hours free time….and therefore it is logical to work now. Maybe I am overthinking this here to think of time like this. Not sure. :S

Appreciate all that you do, you’re a legend, not to blow smoke up your…behind…(didn’t swear) but thank you a million!

Kind regards,

Nicholas
