THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU…

(Photo: Garland Cannon)

It was just past 5pm EST in Manhattan, and I’d been on pins and needles all day.

The report was coming in any minute. All attempts to nap earlier, despite two hours of sleep, had failed. There would be no rest on this Wednesday.

Now, in the lobby of the ACE Hotel, a few friends — including my agent, Steve Hanselman, my assistant, Charlie Hoehn, and my brother from another mother, Chris — had gathered with me to drink champagne. No matter the outcome, it had been a hard-fought battle over three years. THREE YEARS. Hospitalizations, surgeries, you name it.

I stared at the floor, reciting the reasons why things could go right. Most of them were silly and superstitious. Then my internal devil’s advocate chimed in with the reasons other books would beat me: better retail placement, celebrity authors, dedicated TV shows, etc.

“It’s here.”

I looked up. Steve smiled and handed me his Blackberry:

#1: The 4-Hour Body…

The 4-Hour Body had hit #1 on The New York Times bestseller list, on the hardest list (Advice, How-To) during the hardest week of the year.

I was in shock for the rest of the evening.

THANK YOU

For the rest of the night, as my friends fed me shots, I thought back to 2007, when The 4-Hour Workweek was turned down by 26 out of 27 publishers.

Everything that I’ve experienced in the last three years is thanks to you. I learn more from you than I could ever teach.

Much more to come soon (including a detailed post-game analysis of the launch), but — for the time being — I’ll keep it simple: THANK YOU.

I love you all.

May you and yours have the most joyous of holidays. Now, I need to get to wine and chocolate with the family… 🙂

Merry Christmas! 2011 is going to be the best year yet for all of us!

Un abrazo grande,

Tim

Well-deserved, Tim. You really put in the work, and you have integrity, and it comes through in the book. It is a testament to the NYT and all the book lovers out there that they’re giving acknowledgement where it’s due.

Congrats on the victory–not success–there is a difference. I can imagine that the three years it took to compile this book were some of the most gruelling, strenuous and physically dibilitating of your life. I’ll smile extra hard reading about them in detail. My question is this: now that you’ve done the near impossible TWICE in scoring #1 bestsellers, how much higher does the bar sit now? Let that nice thought sit on your chest as you begin to do it a third time.

All the best,

Tim,

Great book.

If you ever doubt the influence of your work, pay attention to the “Customers who bought this item also bought” and “Frequently Bought Together” sections of the amazon.com listing for the Travel Ultrasonic Humidifier

it’s pretty much a list of all products you recommended in the Four Hour Body.

Rather a powerful message if you ask me.

Tim,

I love your book. I just started the Slow Carb diet, I’m on the second week now. I have lost fat and I’m really excited cuz this diet is so easy.

I have a question though. Is corn forbidden on regular days? I know corn can be white, so this may be a stupid question.

Anyways, thanks for your hard work and dedication!

On getting cold – I am perplexed by this research and the results. People tend to put on weight in the winter when it is cold out. Also Eskimo/Inuit people and those who live in more northerly and colder climates tend to be heavier. Those who live in warm climates are thinner. I understand thermogenics but this is a perplexing fact. Tim, do you have an explanation?

i haven’t quite gotten through yet but found it very insightful. especially the bit about weight-loss through the cold was very interesting.

have you looked into tibetan monks using meditation against cold? might be something for your next trip:

Tim,

Enjoying the book and experimenting with a number of exercises and supplements. Tried to make Mike Mahler’s Vanilla Walnut Protein Cookies and could not get a thick paste with the recipe as is. Too soupy with 1.5 cups of water. What am I doing wrong?

I understand that, on slow-carb, its important to eat within an hour of waking up. Does this include naps?

I wouldn’t think so. Its upon waking from over night sleep where you haven’t eaten for probably over 8 hrs (depending how much you sleep).

Question for Tim (or anyone else who might have an idea) regarding reversing injuries:

I’ve had an issue for years where an almond-sized and shaped area on the surface of my kneecap hurts to the touch… bad. It’s a nerve-like pain; I jump when the seam of my jeans hits it, and I’m in the worst pain I’ve ever felt (and I’ve had severe dislocations and breaks) for about 3 minutes if I knock it on a table leg. After those few minutes, I’m completely back to normal and fine. I play sports and have no problems unless the spot is hit.

I’ve been to neurologists and orthopedic surgeons, had cortisone injections, MRIs… nothing works and no one knows what it is. The neurologist says it can’t be phantom pain because it’s too specific. The orthopedic surgeon said the cortisone shot would fix it, but it hurt just as bad immediately after the shot.

This may seem minor, but it really messes with my quality of life. If someone pats me on the knee in a crowded restaurant I’m on the ground writhing in pain helplessly while trying to reassure everyone I’ll be fine in a minute.

Tim and the people who follow this blog know some crazy, random tricks to help with injuries, so I’m hoping someone might have a clue as to what’s going on and how I might fix it. Thanks!

Tim, just as the 4HWW gave you permission to write the 4HB, the 4HB will give you permission to delve into hair loss and penis extension.

I remember, in an interview, you stating how a man’s greatest fears were 1) getting fat and 2) too much email. I’d revise that to include 3) becoming bald.

Book is excellent. Consuming it and taking notes like crazy (175pgs, 7 evernote notebooks and 2 days later…)

Noticed a small, insignificant error you’ll want to forward to your publisher though. On page 99, you discuss “MISTAKE #7: HITTING THE GYM TOO OFTEN”. This should be the eight mistake, not the seventh.

As I said, insignificant, but from what I can tell, something you’d want changed.

Again, the book is tremendous and I look forward to benefitting greatly from all of your hard work! Congrats!

Tim, you always find very interesting topics to cover in your book. Very unique and unexplored. The 4 Hour Body book is really good but you know what would be even better – if you had your own cable show!

The topics that I’m reading about are fascinating but really hard /understand by just reading. For example, I’m reading about some of the doctors who helped take away your pain through locating the muscles/parts of the body that were actually out of balance. I’m reading the steps to get my body back in balance and find myself wishing that you had a 30 – 1 hour tv show that shows you interviewing some of these incredible experts, showing what they do, talking about the research, showing the before and after, etc.

Yes, I do know you have a few videos online that I can look at but I think with your interest in researching what really works, talking to experts in all sorts of areas and your experiments that you would have a hit show. I think of it as a combination of Mythbusters, Dirty Jobs, and Anthony Bordain’s No Reservations.

Anyway, I really hope you will consider it!

I do love the book but tv show would be awesome!

Tim,

Happy Holidays and congrats on the success of 4HB!

Love the book and nearly done highlighting from each chapter I find useful. Yes, I am telling close friends about the book, but more importantly, I have set up an Excel and Word doc, measuring and documenting exactly my progress. Since this is New Years Eve, I’ve set this as my first cheat day, but will not be going too crazy. This morning was day 3 of the Slow Carb diet, and no exercise, which will begin next week.

Results—day 1- 236lbs./33.5 bodyfat. day 2- 232.8/32.8 and finally today–229.4lbs./31.9% bodyfat! Not bad for only changing the diet! My goal is 15% bodyfat, and from there will tweak even more.

Thanks again Tim, as you are giving me hope to finally construct the body I’ve always thought to be out of hand.

Hi Tim,

BIG FAN!!

I’ve been reading your blog for a while, I have 4HWW and I just got 4HB and am half way through it (right now in the Orgasm section 🙂

Both Awesome!

I am on it! I have followed every single rule except that I have 2 equals with a cup of coffee in the morning and I have been putting a tbsp of heavy whipping cream as I used to add 7 equals and lots of cream.

I tried quitting coffee as I do not want to drink it plain, but I had massive headaches.

I started on Monday and have tracked every single thing I’ve eaten and I weighed in this morning and have not lost not even half a pound.

I am not discouraged, but I want to know your thoughts. I am more determined to keep going as I know it has only been a few days but I figured you have so many comments that it might take a while for you to respond (if you do)

I have already lost 50 pounds and have another 50 to go, I had started this slow carb diet from your blog but I was not being diligent enough as I was having some whole wheat bread in the AM.

The reason I mention this is that maybe my weight will be slow to come off?

Should I quit coffee? what do you recommend for the headaches if I do quit?

I really want to do this so I hope to hear back from you.

Thanks, Congratulations on all your success and Happy New Year!

My first cheat day after 5 days of slow carb. I’m shocked at how much less flavorful chocolate tastes. How little I’m interested in the frozen pizza that I was desperate for on Monday. This program seems like something that I would have to take good effort to fail with.

First of all, I want to thank-you for the 4-hour workweek. Because of the outsourcing angle, I am able to spend most of the year living in Mexico (Bucerias near Puerto Vallarta) to be exact).

My wife and I have started the 4 hour body slow carb diet. Living in Mexico, getting beans (especially refried ones) is easy! I would like to know what you think of fresh Corn Tortillas. Is that OK? The taco’s on the street are amazing here! Come on down and I will treat you to Taco’s on the Street (bring Kevin Rose along also!) and red wine 🙂

Great work Tim! Although, after reading 4HWW I have no idea why I would be surprised. 🙂

I have one question (for now): When it comes to planning meals, you listed many kinds of legumes to form the bulk of the calories. I’m not fond of any of the kinds of beans listed. Would regular New England baked beans be an acceptable substitute? Or would the molasses and brown sugar/maple syrup disqualify them because of the carb count? I suspect that may be the case, but I’m hoping.

If not, what kinds of flavorings would you recommend to make plain beans palatable?

Larry Black

P.S. I haven’t yet had a breakthrough with a profitable muse, but I still visit the forum and re-read 4HWW once every couple months for inspiration.

Hey Tim,

I lost six pounds of fat in my first ten days without even adhering to the slow carb diet for a third of my meals. I can hardly imagine how much more progress I would have made if I had gone all the way. Now, it’s off to add some pounds of muscle without overworking myself, which I seem to like to do like most guys trying to gain muscle.

Thank you so much for the book, Tim. Congratulations on the #1 and best of luck in 2011!

How awesome it is to come across some new science, research and proof to aid our full time job of staying fit

Well done Tim, thanks a lot

However! Ive been eating healthy and exercising for the last 10 years or so and have brought my BF from around 33 into the high teens. I do tennis, yoga and gym twice a weeek

Since I got used to the 6 meal a day approach, I rely a lot on fruits and on oatmeal for diversification, particularly for one of my two breakfasts …. I was gutted when I read none of these are allowed.

Anyone faced a similar challenge?

When are the forums for the 4HB going to be up..?

Tim,

Congrats on the new book, muy chevere!!!

A close friend bought me 4HWW as a Christmas gift last year and my life hasn’t been the same since (in a good way of course!). Hoping to leave my “prestigious finance job” to launch a new venture in 2011 and while I always knew I wanted to make a major life change, your book made me ask myself what the hell I was waiting for.

I pre-bought 4HB for me and all my friends. Only a few chapters in, but very impressive so far, loving the Occam’s protocol chapters. Made it to the launch in NYC – man it was a packed house, glad it was a success.

Just wanted to say thank you for all your awesome work and continuing to push your curiosity and share your insight with us. Keep up the good work, and all the best in 2011!!

Keep on crushing it!

Here’s a story that highlights the importance of reading Tim’s book and taking his personal experience of experimentation to heart.

Tim, I got your book about 2 weeks ago and read it cover to cover (well, the Kindle equivalent of this, 🙂 ) And then I took notes on the fat loss areas and am starting to implement things now.

As a travelling physician who is 39 years old, I want to thank Tim for writing this book. So much of the traditional nutritional information we learn during our medical training is based on research performed 40 years ago. And unfortunately much of this “research” is tainted by methodological problems encouraged by the funding sources (the government and drug companies).

About 6 months ago I weighed 180 lbs; I presently weight 159 pounds due to daily walking (3-5 miles/day, averaging about 30-40 miles/week of walking) that I started 6 months ago. My waist circumference at the navel improved from 39 to 34.5. I reached 95% of these results within about 3 months of starting the walking, and the last 3 months have basically been in a plateau. Obviously all of this was before I read your book, which came out earlier this month.

My diet over the last 6 months has been protein (chicken, beef primarily), veggies, and 1-2 times a week eating whatever I want (hoagies, candy are personal favs). This includes daily breakfast with cereal & skim milk (i.e. daily dairy at breakfast time). No regular legumes.

Unfortunately over the last 6 months I was using an over-the-counter body impedance scale that I bought at Wal-Mart for $19 when I started walking 6 months ago. I say “unfortunately” because I measured my body fat with the scale weekly over the last 6 months and kept a log, and my log shows that my body fat % improved from 26% to 19% over the last 6 months.

Well, today I went and got a DEXA body composition study in San Jose. And what was my body fat by the DEXA? 37.1%. That’s right. I spent the last 6 months thinking that my body fat was improving from the mid 20’s into the high teen’s, and it turns out that AFTER all the walking I’ve done that my body fat % is actually in the obese category.

If you look at me, I am a not a fat-looking person. Like I said above, I’m 5’7″ and my waist is 34.5. Nevertheless, the DEXA doesn’t lie.

Initially today as I was driving back to my hotel in Livermore I was down in the dumps about my result. Then it occurred to me that when I was 179 with a waist of 39.0 6 months ago that my DEXA body fat % at that time probably would have been over 40%. So I realized that even though today’s number is a disappointment, it represents a BIG improvement over where I was 6 months ago. Plus, even though the number was wrong with the impedance scale, I was using a consistent method and that method was showing that my body fat % was improving. So I’m not as upset as I was initially with my DEXA result.

So where do I go from here with my new, accurate, real numbers thanks to the DEXA? First of all, I ordered complete labs on myself which were drawn yesterday. I am calling Spectracell on Monday to order the nutritional profile to complete my self-testing.

Next, I’ve set-up a new excel spreadsheet today to track my total inches on a weekly basis (not even bothering checking my weekly weight, the impedance scale is going in the garbage). I’m sticking to my original goals set 6 months ago of a body fat of 8% and a body weight of approximately 140 pounds. This means a goal composition of 11 lbs of fat and 124 lbs of muscle (my bones weigh 5.1 lbs, thank you DEXA :)).

This means I have to lose about 46 pounds of fat and gain 27 pounds of muscle.

Some people reading my post probably think that my goals are uncompletely unrealistic. But I know that I can accomplish them. I can do anything that I set my mind to, and now that I have accurate information I’m dealing with reality instead of the land-of-make-believe (thank you DEXA and 4HB, no thank you to the body impedance scale).

So what did I do today? After returning to Livermore from my DEXA scan, I went shopping to start the slow-carb diet. Organic eggs, frozen spinach and other frozen vegetables, canned beans, chicken thighs and grass-fed beef from Trader Joe’s. Coffee beans and cassia cinnamon, and a spice grinder. No more cereal, no more dairy products, and no more fruit (sorry bananas but you have to go). Morton Lite salt. Sound familiar, 4HB’ers ??

I ordered Orbitape and a neck pad for cold compresses on Amazon today. Both will arrive within a week.

I’m going to the store on Sunday to buy supplements. Specifically daily Magnesium, calcium, PAGG, and B12. I bought my fermented food (canned sauercraut) today. Depending on my nutritional lab results and testosterone results, I’ll add supplements with Vitamin D and/or fermented cod liver oil/vitamin rich butter fat and Athletic Greens as recommended in 4HB.

If my ferritin comes back > 50, I’m going to start donating blood every couple of months.

I bought 35lb and 15lb kettlebells today so I can begin minimum effective dose bilateral kettlebell swings on Monday and Friday with bilateral swings at the smaller weight on Fridays. Will do the cat vomits on Monday and Friday as well. No more 35-40 mile walking per week for now, but I’ll consider a few 2-mile walks per week depending on my total inches results.

My showers in the AM are now cold showers (I started this a few days ago, and set up a 21-day email reminder with HabitForge for self-encouragement).

I’m going to binge on Sundays, so my weekly intermittent fast will begin with an early dinner on Saturdays.

Sorry for the long post. Good luck to everyone in achieving their goals. And thanks again to Tim for writing this book.

Great book…..interesting, fun to read and lots and lots of great insight.

I’m grappling with 2 Slow-Carb Diet rules:

1-Eat “as much as you want”. Portion control is my weak spot. There is no stopping me if I know I can eat without limit.

2-Eat beans at every meal. 8 ounces of cooked lentils per meal=36 net carbs. 36 net carbs x 4 meals (every 4 hours) = 144 net carbs per day. (Atkins would roll in his grave and Gary Taubes and Michael Eades, whom you quote in the book, would freak).

What am I missing?

The title is misleading you have to on a very strict regimented diet for 6 days of the week. I don’t see any four hours in that. As much as I loved the four hour work week, I felt this was a let down if you took the title seriously.

Tim,

Congratulations on hitting #1! Your book is incredible – I’ve been reading and re-reading it since the day it arrived!

I have one quick question about using muscle contraction to activate Glut-4 in order to direct nutrients to the muscle. I understand that this is an effective tool for binge days, but as someone who wants to gain muscle, would it make sense to do some form of this before every meal, so that nutrients are constantly being directed towards muscle?

Thank you for your help, and thank you so so much for your writing! Reading your work has caused a paradigm shift in some of my most basic assumptions.

I am almost through reading the Kindle edition of the 4 Hour Body and although I am totally excited and extremely interested I have multiple questions and confusions. Perhaps this is because I do not have the hard copy in my hands, a fact I hope to remedy soon (living in rural Vermont does not allow easy and quick access to some items), but my mind is in a jumble as to where to begin and how in depth I should go with myself (i.e. just do diet and work out smarter or go all the way with supplements and ice baths)….I just have all these questions and need a simply lay-out in front of me to help me decide.

Tim:

OK – so I tried the cold shower this morning before breakfast and all I can say is ….

¡Carambolas!

That’s cold! I must really be a lightweight because about 60 secs into it after rinsing head and face and backing into the stream, I thought, “Why am I doing this again?” and backed out of it. What a whimp!

Is it really that hard to get used to it? Guess I’ll never make the Polar Bear Club, eh?

I just realized that I put in Super Cissus RX with ALA which is not correct. Tim mentions his experimentation with it on Page 110 “For those who can afford it, I believe CQ is very effective for minimizing unwanted fat gain while overfeeding. Until more human studies are done, I don’t plan on continuous use, but I will use it during 8-12 week growth cycles, on “off” days, or after joint sprains.” On the box it says: “For more immediate results, begin with a 14-21 day “loading phase” of three capsules, three times per day with meals…” Picture link on page 113. So I don’t know to include it or not as the box recommends, just on “off” days, or forget about it until my focus is on “preserving my abs”???

Since no one seems to be answering questions or giving comments I will step up to the plate. It is very similar to what I am currently doing. One side effect to watch out for is how often you visit the loo. Not to be gross or anything, but the frequency will likely substantially increase. I’ve noticed this in my routine and it gets uncomfortable if you are not used to many more visits than say 4 times a day. My recommendation as a parent of two screaming meme kids a few years back is A&D ointment. You will thank me later.

Hey Tim,

I’m down 20 pounds since the book came out on kindle.

I’ve quit smoking

I’ve gained 5 pounds of muscle

I turned my office from a couch to a personal gym

I’m just rocking everything right now!

My family, my friends, they all bought your book, and at least 5 of them are on some veriety of change in their diet (protiene breakfast and no bread/juice for everyone) with big changes.

Can’t thank you enough, you seriously rock!

Your first book cut my work day from 7 days a week (designer, was invited to work at digg.com a while ago etc) to now only about 8 hours a week of focused work.

Thanks for making me money and saving me time, and inspiring me!

@Peter who posted above: Try just one or two espresso shots, with dark cinnamon (no cream and no equal)… it tastes like cream and sugar with the cinnamon, and by cutting it down to a shot or two you an slowly cut back and quit coffee. Also try a ton of dark green tea, that helps the headaches.

Dear Tim,

On December 29, I was ready to curse you. I was so demoralised by my ‘Before’ pictures I went to bed and moped with a box of flavoured crackers.

Today, I bless your genius 5’9″ person. I have just finished one of the best meals of my life – free-range Otway pork chop coated with a mix of rosemary, garlic, vinegar, mustard and oil, plus vegies and beans – made by ME.

I had forgotten how pork crackling, in particular, could induce moans of pleasure.

And I haven’t even got to the wonderful 2008 Giant Steps Harry’s Monster I’m drinking. Or the poached eggs on zucchini fritters with salted organic lentils that were this morning’s breakfast. I’m eating like a queen.

OR the fact that in four very imperfect days on this diet, I have lost more than a kilo.

Thank you. Thank YOU.

Hey Tim. Great Book.

With all these questions you will have to do a webinar or a FAQ Section. There is a great FAQ plugin for WordPress called FAQ You where you could create a Slow Carb Diet FAQ. On your Sites. Your Outsourcers could manage the questions.

By the way you have inspired me to write my own Blog on my journey through your book and what I have learned. Called http://thehealthymonk.com it is a tribute to your work Tim.

I can’t wait to lose the weight and I know I will by using your book as a base. Cheers Tim and Happy New year.

Congrats on the success (and well-orchestrated launch). I bought 3 copies, gave two away and finished reading mine yesterday. I took down a few questions as I read that I hope someone on your team could answer. I’m posting here as recommended on your contact page (since it won’t fit into 140 characters!):

1. Why recommend the KB swing only to shoulder height instead of going to the 12 o’clock overhead position (as most crossfit places suggest) which better engages the core? You can’t do as much weight but wouldn’t it be a better full-body version of the exercise in perfect posterior?

2. The book documents at least 3 or 4 times where you’ve gained 20+lbs of muscle. What caused you to lose it between each attempt? I’m wondering what it takes to maintain a 20# increase in lean muscle and if you lost it through slow degradation, a planned deload or if you “fell off the wagon”? You must have some clothing budget to accommodate those kinds of regular body changes!

3. In the Strength Gains section on pg 338-339, what portion of those gains are just getting better at *performing* an exercise? When any of us pick up a new skill, say jumping rope, we typically make radical gains in our first few attempts as we figure out the motor skills. The confidence in *performing* the move leads to quick initial gains. Your high-jump attempts on Pg 354 demonstrates correlation != cause where through specifically technique you make big gains over your starting number.

4. Flexibility is my nemesis and I was hoping to see some approaches in the book. My muscles are at a length for a body about 3″ shorter than I actually am. Any guerrilla programs or hacks for achieving great flexibility?

A little bit of errata:

1. On page 209 you state that 8 x 30 -> 5 x 60 on the overhead shoulder press is a 100% gain but in reality it’s more like 210# -> 300# or a ~50% gain. That’s like comparing a warm up set to a 5RM set… not very accurate if the reps aren’t the same. You use total weight moved in other places in the book so this stands out to me.

2. On page 369, it’s a myth that elevation has an impact on sobriety:

http://www.annals.org/content/122/12/925.abstract

http://www.faa.gov/library/reports/medical/oamtechreports/1970s/media/AM79-26.pdf

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/3579819?ordinalpos=1&itool=EntrezSystem2.PEntrez.Pubmed.Pubmed_ResultsPanel.Pubmed_RVDocSum

Great book overall; I’m going to give a diet a try for the first time in my life (no longer using the exercise-as-grounds-to-eat-all-mexican-food-in-sight excuse) and see if I can finally put on some weight. My weight doesn’t fluctuate much so after a month I’ll see if I need to look into leaky gut syndrome. Thanks Tim!

Hey Tim, my husband and I are reading the book like crazy- got our PAGG going and got the correct meals going in the house- I am wondering tho, about corn. I hear back and forth but I have searched the book and can not find where corn sits. Tim,

Looks like my previous post got deleted.

If I pick the Irish Butter plus Cod Liver Oil option, how much Irish butter should I take, and how should I take it? Raw? Fried with my eggs? Rectally with my eggs?

Regarding Corn…. so it’s OK as long as it’s not made into a Tortilla?

Regarding Egg Yokes… in some portions of your book you mention that you eat egg whites with a single yoke for flavor…. then in other portions you imply that the yokes are healthy for you.

Regarding Butter and Cheese… you don’t specify to avoid these, but your suggested meals don’t ever include them, if I recall correctly.

Regarding the difference between slow-carb and Atkins Diet… I’ve gotten this question at least 10 times from people I’m telling about 4HB. Do you have a good way of explaining the differences since at least 50% of the people who might try Slow-Carb, probably at one point were doing Atkins?

I’m loving the book, by the way, and my friends and family desperately want for me to pick a new topic of conversation! It’s a very addicting set of topics!

Hi Jon,

See my last response as well. To the others:

– Corn — a little is OK, but keep it light.

– Whole eggs from good sources are fine.

– I’d avoid cheese

– Atkins focuses on excluding more carbs and also includes a lot of junk calories. I focus more on nutrient-dense calories that are higher fat/protein.

Best,

Tim

I am thoroughly enjoying the 4HB book – it’s great. I am currently employing the slow carb diet and the geek to freak workout program (with kettleball swings). I haven’t lost weight yet (one week in), but I’m sure it will come in time. I feel great though and I’m making good progress on my other 4HB endeavor the bench press program. I’ll try to keep results posted on my Dingo_Pug twitter. In the meantime, some questions on the diet for fellow slow carb devotees:

What exactly is allowable on the meal after a resistance training session – is it just white carbs allowed or is this a free meal (e.g. sugars, etc.).

What about Fage yogurt? Ok?

This may sound odd, but cardio workout is ok w/ this diet right? I mean, I like running and some cardio workouts. I ask this b/c of the warnings not to workout too much on geek to freak directions.

What about cheeses? What kind are ok?`

Very interesting book so far Tim..I was in Barnes & Noble the other day looking for another book and for whatever reason I picked yours up and flipped through it, actually not expecting much (sorry) and I was pleasantly surprised..so I bought it. 2 Questions:

1. The appeal to me is not being hungy all the time. Is there any need to monitor or control portions on this program?

2. Does anybody have experience with the Range of Motion (ROM) exercise device? I have wondered if it can live up to its claim of delivering a full workout in four minutes.

Let me skip the congrats part, because I think it goes without saying. Fabulous, fabulous book. I started my Slow Carb diet two days ago and I’m down 1.8 lbs already!

I intend to follow the Slow Carb diet, PAGG, ice therapy, the Perfect Posterior, Six-Minute Abs and the testosterone long-term protocol. Too much? 🙂 I’m so excited!

I have some questions about the vitamin-rich butter / cod liver oil combination, though. I found the cod oil supplements, but what should I do with the butter? Are there any butter oil pills or is it enough to eat good-quality butter? How do you combine both, though? Is that compatible with the Slow Carb diet? Is it enough if I just take the cod liver oil without the butter? Thanks in advance!

Hey Tim,

Love the book. Saved me from the absolute boredom of returning to Kansas for the holidays. One question about a small element of the contents, though.

You say we should eat within an hour of reading. However, most other sites and opinions I have heard have said that cardio in the morning, when done on an empty stomach boosts your BMR for the rest of the day.

Should we attempt to pound out a half hour’s worth of cardio before eating in the morning, or will we burn more fat by just going ahead and eating? I’m at about %13.5 body fat right now, so maximization of fat loss is key for me.

Congrats on your most recent success!

Hi Tim,

When I returned from Christmas with family I decided to look for something interesting in way of fitness book (I have been a certified personal trainer for 28+ years) and found your book listed. As a fan of your other books, I knew this was what I had to buy and went straight to bookstore. LOVE IT!!!

I am a trainer who has always tried every ridiculous diet my clients brought me over the years (at 110 lbs and healthy, I did only try for a couple of weeks at a time). Some I felt and saw no difference, some I felt like crap – maybe worse, some had me actually putting on weight – they were that bad. So I totally understand testing things on your own body. I am about 100 pages into book – and this is with buying it yesterday and working my reading, highlighting, stickering around appts. Love it. Can’t say that enough and will absolutely be telling everyone.

True believer in the more protein and have been using that myself for past couple of years, especially with 1st meal of day.

Thanks!!!

George,

I’m no expert, just another fellow trying to lose some weight, but let me tell you my take.

If you’re talking about the section on domino foods, I think (I thought when I read it) that Tim was referring to baked garbanzo beans, which can be snacked on like popcorn, and not to meals that include them as an ingredient. Google tells me that their glycemic index is a little lower that black beans. So you should be safe.

Hope this helps.

I love the book! I got it for Christmas and only started reading it a couple of nights ago, I was already planning on cooking lentils over the weekend, so I just added tons more to the pot and now I have lentils for the week!! I do have a question, maybe someone can help me with. I wake up at 5:30am to make breakfast for my daughter before school, and then I go back to bed at 6:30am til about 9am. Should I eat my breakfast between 5:30 and 6:30, or wait until 9am?? I started the menu yesterday and was starving this morning at 6am, but waited til later. My intuition says eat at 6am, what do you think??

In the 4HB did Tim mean to state 200 micrograms (mcg) instead of 200 milligrams (mg) of Huperzine-A?

You notice that most pills of Huperzine-A are 50-200 mcg which would mean I would need to take 1000 of the 200 mcg pill in order to meet the stated 200 mg dose that Tim references. I know he can swallow 25 pills but probably not 1000, haha.

Cheers,

It seems that the surgery is the only solution but I wanted to ask you first and it will be very nice if you can give me your thoughts on it since I’ve found nothing yet and it’s a verry common problem among men and teens. Bought the Kindle edition of your new book and enjoyed reading it over the holidays. I started the Slow Carb Diet Sunday and I am nearing the end of my second day. A little early to report any results but the following is a little narrative about my 2nd lunch on the diet.

I learned a valuable lesson today. This morning when I was thinking about what to take for lunch, I decided I wanted a high protein, low carb, high potassium lunch. With this in mind I opened the cabinet and found a can of salmon and a can of black beans. Since I was running late I didn’t want to take the time to put them in separate containers. I reasoned that since they were both going to end up in my gut, I would just save my gut some time and mix them together. Lucy, my lovely wife, was kind enough to open the cans, drain them and find an appropriately sized container for them. I tossed in a few drops of balsamic vinegar for flavor and we were out the door in record time.

Now I love the flavor of salmon, even canned, and I love black beans and balsamic vinegar, so you can imagine my surprise when the taste of the three items combined made me want to vomit on my shoes. Luckily I was able to hold it down and because I had packed nothing else to eat I suffered through the entire meal. I needed the sustenance it provided and I hate to waste food. I am also attempting to live by the credo “eat to live, don’t live to eat”. It is amazing what a little self-talk and a large paper clip attached to your nose will allow you to choke down.

Well I ate in record time and was feeling good that the ordeal was over and I had survived it without sending the contents of my gut to the floor. What I did not understand at the time was that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction, just like in high school physics. Well the reaction for this particular action came in two equally disturbing forms: 1. If you think salmon , black beans and balsamic vinegar are disgusting going in, you will need a much more descriptive adjective for the gastronomic after effects. 2. If you want to remain in the good graces of your fellow office mates, you should never put such a concoction into a microwave oven. If you ignore this advice, be prepared to face the wrath of those around you. You can mitigate that wrath somewhat by doing two things: A. Be prepared with cloth and cleaners to scour the bean innards from the microwave cooking cavity. And B. have a can of spray deodorizer nearby, both for the air in the office from cooking and for the later gastronomic by-products.

Respectfully keeping my distance,

Harvey

I’ll be totally honest and admit that when I started reading the 4-hour work week, I wasn’t convinced it was for me – I’m a biomedical engineering grad student and I genuinely love my work and I’m cool with taking a pay-cut for the awesomeness of doing something I care about – so to me, my work isn’t work – its my passion. I realized though that your gift is the inspiration and pathway to keep working on my dream and never having to go back to the soul-destroyer mill or having to accept the conventional path to success in my area, or having to accept the grad-student mold.

Now, I’m so excited to read 4-hour body – its also an obsession of mine and when I heard you were publishing on it, my respect for you quintupled – I’m sure it’ll shoot to all new highs when I read it – it should be waiting for me in my mailbox at home (I’m currently skippering a boat in the coral sea). Very excited.. can’t wait to read. I’ll repeat… you sir… rock!

Congratulations! That’s fantastic news!

I’m still waiting for my book, but given it was shipped via UPS hopefully I’ll get sometime this year.

I bought your book as a gift and ended up reading a couple chapters. I love the section about testosterone enhancement. Gonna buy a copy for myself now lol.

started the new eating plan today after reading the 4HB. First day was a piece of cake!

The last book had all kinds of cheat sheets to go to from your site. Have you made one for this book? I would love a simple sheet of free foods, focus foods, etc etc i could carry around. I made one for myself but I end up with lots of questions throughout the day.

Well Tim, Your influence may be reaching farther than you know!

I was in the local Vitamin Shoppe here in San Diego this afternoon looking to pick up my PAGG stack. I also had the Super Cissus on the list.

Whadda ya know? They’re OUT of Super Cissus, I bought the last bottle of the only other brand they carry and they are OUT of Policosanol in ANY brand. I got the last small 60 count bottle of that too!

The girl helping me says,”That’s funny, we don’t sell a lot of policosanol, has it been in the news?” LOL.

I told her about your book and she said, “Oh, yeah, some guy was in here and showed us that book… said he bought 20 copies!”

That’s what supplement shopping is like here in sunny SD!

I wonder about the rest of the country?

I’m curious as to why whole wheat bread/food that’s actually made from 100% whole wheat(not enriched BS) isn’t allowed in the slow-carb diet…the only explanation you give is a simple…no in the book.

No grains. Search “Robb Wolf” on this blog and you’ll find an entire post on this topic. Hope that helps…

Ciao Tim!

Amazon.it (Italy) is advertising the italian version of your book on the site.

While I certainly think that it will happen someday in the next months, dispatching in 3-4 weeks seems unlikely to me.

Does this means something for non-english readers?

Tim, As in chapter 2 of 4HWW the part of Retirement is worst case Scenario Insurance, well it’s getting even worse now. I was a Middle Management Employee for 18 years and because of state budget cuts they eleminated my position. Which helped me find your book but as in chapter 3, just like Hans, I don’t know exactly what I want for the rest of my life (54 now) but I do taste it. A WOO! (window of opertunity) but I need to find what it is because I am bored with what my efforts has brought me. So, like in chapter 4, I need to define “What I Want! and I believe finding this book might be the beginning. Weather you read these words yourself or not, typing them is helping!. I am up to chapter 6 and on my way to purchace 4HB to add to my new self. Also would like to ask permission to start a Meet-up Group under the title 4-Hour-Lifestyle Group using your concepts and promoting your materials to purchace and discuss. I will not start one untill you feel it is fine. Thank you, I enjoy your methods of attacking life! Craig Zinkoski

I am almost finished with the audio version of the book. Two comments/questions:

1. Tim mentions a PDF file that goes along with the audio book to help you with the diet and supplement sections. Where do you get this?

2. The audio book leaves out a lot of material from the book. Not-cool! Does anyone know if there is a plan to re-release with the missing material?

Tim –

Congratulations!! What an amazing book.

The chapter on increasing testosterone is interesting and my brother said that it truly works. Have you done any research into naturally increasing estrogen levels in women, especially post-menopausal women?

Haven’t gone through all the links in Tools & Tricks for each chapter, but here’s one that’s not working:

http://www.fourhourbody.com/40yard

… the YouTube vid of Eisen vs. the pros was removed.

A search found the following, which looks to be the same vid. Let’s hope it doesn’t get taken down, too!

http://www.collegehumor.com/video:1930271

(probably elsewhere online also, but this is the first one I could find)

Tim and crew, any chance you can update your shortlink to point to a working vid, either the one above at collegehumor or another?
