“I think one of the biggest things that I found … is the amount of kids that have sleep-disorder breathing, this can be snoring or sleep apnea or some sort of dysfunction in their breathing at night. And then if you take that population of kids who have these breathing problems at night, and if you take the population of kids who have ADHD, those two diagrams almost completely intersect. What many researchers are saying is that ADHD does not exist. What you’re looking at are sleep-deprived kids. And the most shocking thing to me is that a kid that presents with ADHD, they’re never assessed for their breathing. They’re never assessed for their sleep. They’re given drugs and put on their way, and I think it’s criminal.”

“[Maurice Daubard] was extremely sick as a child, had various lung infections, various respiratory disorders, and he was slated for surgery. They were going to remove a large part of his lungs. And at that time, a missionary came in to see him and said, ‘Hey, I was just in the far East and I heard about this thing called yoga.’ And he said, ‘Well, what’s yoga?’ He said, ‘Let me tell you about it.’ And he showed him some breathing techniques. So Daubard said, ‘I don’t want to do the surgery yet. Give me a few weeks to try to rehabilitate myself.’ And everyone thought he was crazy. And not only did he rehabilitate himself, he gained this almost superhuman strength by adopting these breathing practices. And that was in the 1950s.”

“They looked at what happened to the bodies of all of these subjects and they looked at how heart rate variability went through the roof, how blood pressure decreased, how oxygen increased in the brain, and all of these different systems of the body entered the state of coherence. And they called this breathing pattern coherent breathing after that. You don’t need to pray to breathe this way. All you have to do is inhale five to six seconds and exhale five to six seconds.”

And I did not plan to do this, but it’s like it came from another realm in mid-sentence as he’s talking about this, I just said, ‘You know what? I quit. I can’t do this anymore.’”

They’re as dysfunctional as everyone else. They’ve learned how to push through the pain to win the game, but that doesn’t mean they’re breathing properly.”

The key is where I was gaining real clarity is I did something completely cliched … I got a house in the woods where there was absolutely nothing around. No Starbucks to go to, no store to go to. And I just did that thing. I thought, ‘Huh, if I have no distractions around, what will happen?’ And it turns out that boredom is the most wonderful muse of all.”

This is what my book was mostly about. It wasn’t breathwork. It was about this biological function of breathing. Hi Tim,

Long time listener. I thought someone else would have commented on this by now (maybe they have?) as I’ve noticed it in most of your interviews: one easy area for improvement on your interview techniques is the ‘asthma laugh’ – as an example, see 27:37 of the James Nestor interview as a starting point, and roll from there. When you want to laugh/emphasize a humorous point, it sounds (to me) a little forced with the ‘asthma exhale’. I realize it’s only human, but on the audio version it sounds a little awkward.

I know you’re a fan of Sam Harris….I think the understated style at humorous junctures is just fine and maybe even better?

And for all the haters out there – yes I realize Tim is amazing and podcasting is hard. Just jumping on the ‘continuous improvement’ train that I know Tim would support.

I know that James Nestor refused to divulge the name of the PEMF unit he uses, but have any of you tried to do a deep dive and uncover this fact? From my previous investigations, I was led to believe that portable PEMF units are probably of little value because of the need for large copper coils to generate a sizable magnetic field. If he has one that can be portable, that would be extremely intriguing and definitely useful!

Thank you so much for this podcast. I have been avoiding “breath work” for years, because, as James Nestor said, it just sounded complicated and I thought “cultish” as well. I didn’t want a pricy spiritual practice that required a time commitment – I wanted something that could positively impact my health and longevity. So wow!! to James Nestor and his commitment to helping people learn to breathe normally. That is so huge. I have ordered his book Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art and I have invited my husband and some friends over to join me in listening to this podcast (again). And btw, I loved the show notes – made it easy for me to pause the tape and look up people and places and devices as I listened, helping me to deepen my understanding of what was being discussed. Overall, another great podcast and I thank you for your commitment to your listeners!

Hi – as long time follower of Tibetan Buddhism I do find James Nestor’s comments on tummo grating. He does acknowledge that this practice has deeper levels, but he does not refer to this in a respectful manner. Saying that tummo is a Bon practice is not entirely correct. It is very much also a Vajrayana practice (Vajrayana v Bon in terms of age is very much chicken v egg), and traditionally only taught to Monks/Nuns/others who have reached a certain level. It is NOT taught primarily as a method to keep warm, that is seen as a side effect. Approaching the practice as “a cool method to keep warm” from a Tibetan Buddhist perspective is disrespectful (no matter how many years you put in) and in my view is cultural appropriation. Let’s guard against cultural appropriation for all nations, not just the ones that momentarily are in the spotlight. Having said all that, thank you so much for all your podcast content (including the ones I don’t like!) which I always find extremely interesting and eductional.

Finally getting around to this episode which was in my backlog. While I’m a huge believer in breathing techniques and breathwork, I am dubious to Nestor’s claims of addressing sleep apnea. First, I have it. Second, it can be caused by throat relaxation/collapse when sleeping and from what I’ve researched no amount of breathwork is going to fix that. I found a related Reddit thread discussing this: https://www.reddit.com/r/SleepApnea/comments/1i70osv/bummed_out_james_nestor_doesnt_seem_to_understand/ and was taken back a bit after learning that Nestor doesn’t have any footnotes in Breath. Is that odd?
