How to Lose 20 lbs. of Fat in 30 Days… Without Doing Any Exercise

Fat Loss via Better Science and Simplicity

It is possible to lose 20 lbs. of bodyfat in 30 days by optimizing any of three factors: exercise, diet, or drug/supplement regimen. I’ve seen the elite implementation of all three in working with professional athletes. In this post, we’ll explore what I refer to as the “slow-carb diet”.

In the last six weeks, I have cut from about 180 lbs. to 165 lbs., while adding about 10 lbs. of muscle, which means I’ve lost about 25 lbs. of fat. This is the only diet besides the rather extreme Cyclical Ketogenic Diet (CKD) that has produced veins across my abdomen, which is the last place I lose fat (damn you, Scandinavian genetics). Here are the four simple rules I followed…

Rule #1: Avoid “white” carbohydrates

Avoid any carbohydrate that is — or can be — white. The following foods are thus prohibited, except for within 1.5 hours of finishing a resistance-training workout of at least 20 minutes in length: bread, rice, cereal, potatoes, pasta, and fried food with breading. If you avoid eating anything white, you’ll be safe.

Rule #2: Eat the same few meals over and over again

The most successful dieters, regardless of whether their goal is muscle gain or fat loss, eat the same few meals over and over again. Mix and match, constructing each meal with one from each of the three following groups:

Proteins:

Egg whites with one whole egg for flavor

Chicken breast or thigh

Grass-fed organic beef

Pork

Legumes:

Lentils

Black beans

Pinto beans

Vegetables:

Spinach

Asparagus

Peas

Mixed vegetables

Eat as much as you like of the above food items. Just remember: keep it simple. Pick three or four meals and repeat them. Almost all restaurants can give you a salad or vegetables in place of french fries or potatoes. Surprisingly, I have found Mexican food, swapping out rice for vegetables, to be one of the cuisines most conducive to the “slow carb” diet.

Most people who go on “low” carbohydrate diets complain of low energy and quit, not because such diets can’t work, but because they consume insufficient calories. A 1/2 cup of rice is 300 calories, whereas a 1/2 cup of spinach is 15 calories! Vegetables are not calorically dense, so it is critical that you add legumes for caloric load.

Some athletes eat 6-8x per day to break up caloric load and avoid fat gain. I think this is ridiculously inconvenient. I eat 4x per day:

10am – breakfast

1pm – lunch

5pm – smaller second lunch

7:30-9pm – sports training

10pm – dinner

12am – glass of wine and Discovery Channel before bed

Here are some of my meals that recur again and again:

Scrambled Eggology pourable egg whites with one whole egg, black beans, and microwaved mixed vegetables

Grass-fed organic beef, pinto beans, mixed vegetables, and extra guacamole (Mexican restaurant)

Grass-fed organic beef (from Trader Joe’s), lentils, and mixed vegetables

Rule #3: Don’t drink calories

Drink massive quantities of water and as much unsweetened iced tea, tea, diet sodas, coffee (without white cream), or other no-calorie/low-calorie beverages as you like. Do not drink milk, normal soft drinks, or fruit juice. I’m a wine fanatic and have at least one glass of wine each evening, which I believe actually aids sports recovery and fat-loss. Recent research into resveratrol supports this.

Rule #4: Take one day off per week

I recommend Saturdays as your “Dieters Gone Wild” day. I am allowed to eat whatever I want on Saturdays, and I go out of my way to eat ice cream, Snickers, Take 5, and all of my other vices in excess. I make myself a little sick and don’t want to look at any of it for the rest of the week. Paradoxically, dramatically spiking caloric intake in this way once per week increases fat loss by ensuring that your metabolic rate (thyroid function, etc.) doesn’t downregulate from extended caloric restriction. That’s right: eating pure crap can help you lose fat. Welcome to Utopia.

One week, very low cardio for now, brisk walking type LOW CARDIO. This is the only diet I have tried, and at today, day SIX!, that’s dropped me down 5lbs so fast, and I mean noticeable, pure fat loss. Keep on it guys, I know I am. I’ll keep posting progress!

I bought Tim’s 4 hour cook (I love to cook) and got inspired by his analysis of metalearning. While I’m quite overweight, I wasn’t even interested in the 4 hour body for anything other than a good read. But….I was inspired to try it out. In 2 weeks I’ve lost quite a bit of fat (but weigh only about 1 lb less).

How do I know I’ve lost fat and gained muscle? My belt now needs to be 4 inches tighter than before (each belt hole is 1 inch apart) and my old fat pants NEED a belt to stay up.

While I understand the benefits of simplicity as stated in the book, I do wish there was a bit more clarification about potential foods that are go’s or no-go’s. E.G. I’m not sure about onions, garlic, green peppers, hot peppers, celery etc. (Not looking to cheat – but onions can be great food).

One last thing. Tim discusses testosterone boosters in 4 hour body. He doesn’t mention the androsterone present in celery. I’d love to see that covered (and its appropriateness for the slow carb diet) in the next edition of 4 hour body.

Hi.. I am 27years old and I weigh 160pounds (height 158). Three years back I used to weigh (127) and from then on I am unable to loose the extra kilos I have gained.

I have tried working out at a gym as well but of no use, I have worked out for past 3months n I did not loose a single pound/a inch.

I naturally tend to eat pretty healthy stuff and I mostly prefer vegetarian. Yet, I tried dieting n all. No use at all.

No matter what I do.. I am not loosing weight. Now, out of desperation I am taking diet pills since 1 month (Xenical..) but still not effective but decided to continue for 2 more months before saying quits.

If this doesnt help.. I will have to look for other options like liposuction and blahhh. BUT PLEASEEEE… I NEED HELP… HELP ME.

Oops.. I forgot to say.. I blame this increase of weight on my activity level. Previously, I was extremly active as I was participating in sports n all during college but now I do not get time for serious stuff. All I can do is spare an hour for my gym which is not all sufficient.

Please suggest me something.. anything.. I am also thinking of getting a professional help but still not sure.

See if you can up your exercise. Walking has worked for me. I walk 3 miles per day by walking from work to train station. Also if I’m behind my weight loss goals I up the exercise by walking during my lunch hour 30 minutes out and 30 back.

I’ve also done well by eating Atkins diet bars for breakfast and lunch and a salad with chicken for dinner when I’m behind my goal of losing 1 pound a week.

Are you looking to the breads for their carbohydrates or the ‘starch?’

I had a sweet potato and a purple potato this morning with my ‘juice’ and I’ve felt full and satisfied this entire day!

My wife likes to have a starch with her meals, as it gives her the sense of feeling full, longer than just fruits and vegetables alone.

Adding some might help you feel full. Just a thought…

Help!

I have been on this for one week and I have lost NOTHING!

Cold showers daily, Slow burn 40 minutes, twice per week,

Female, Age 50, 5’3″ 127 pounds, desired weight 115.

Menu:

6oz egg whites with one organic egg omelet with mushrooms, green tea with lemon juice;

coffee with stevia and cream;

lunch and dinner:

salmon, cabbage and lima beans, dressed with flax oil;

snack: lettuce with flax oil, avocado, Brazil nuts

Is the salmon, nuts or stevia the problem?

Thanks,

Marge: how much nuts? nuts are tricky–you need to limit it to 1 to 2 oz, tops.

If memory serves–Tim’s not a fan of sweeteners nor cream in coffee; i believe he recommends cinnamon (and i usually add vanilla extract) .

Personally, i’d switc out the lima for a better bean (black or kidney) and cut out the avocado (like nuts, really eats to overeat…).

Good luck!!

Thanks Day!

I thought Tim said 2 TB cream was preferable to milk.

I also thought Tim was OK with avocados.

Too good to be true!

Are there really differences among beans?

Kristal

Reply to  Marge

Tim says to enjoy all the avocado you want, and he describes getting guacamole frequently with his meals. Yes, there are differences between beans, but not enough to help or harm on this diet. As long as you’re getting legumes in almost every meal you are doing good. Remember this: canned kidney beans are packed in corn syrup, so don’t eat those canned. And Tim Ferriss says NO garbanzo beans (chickpeas). I don’t know why he says no to those, but I’ve avoided them in order to obey the diet.

Hi Tim! I’ve been a faithful devotee of the “bean diet” for the last few years. It’s tough for me to maintain a low-carb lifestyle but whenever the pounds start creeping up on me I get back on it for a month or so and everything evens out again. I’m very pleased with the simplicity and the results.

My question is this: lately I’ve been hearing a lot about konjac glucomannan supplements and shirataki noodles. They are described as either no-carb or low-carb. What do you know about these, and are they recommended on the “bean diet”? I have been a strict follower of the rules, never one to cheat with oatmeal or parmesan cheese or even soy sauce, so I am wondering where this konjac plant fits?

Thanks! Kristal

I think mostly what you’ve blogged about is your personal experience, which is understandable, because it worked for you.

You are also very hypocritically incorrect on many factors. I wouldn’t recommend this site to any of my clients, let alone waste the time to research your information.

Before Pregnancy I weighed 150pounds after delivering my baby my weight was up to 166 pounds, it dint bother me at all coz I knew I will eventually lose it after stopping breastfeeding. I enjoyed that big size for 1 1/2 yrs. When I decided is the time to lose it, I started working out, alot of walking and dancing. Dint cut on food intake coz eating is my hobby and I love cooking. However I would make sure I work out alot to burn fat and within 6 months, I was weighing 138 pounds. I know it possible to lose weight while still eating.

Hi Tim – This is the first time viewing your site, and it’s quite inspiring. I’m extremely obese at age 70, and have tried so many different diets. My problem is that I can’t seem to stick to them – mainly because I continue to be hungry. I’m not ignorant as to what is good and what is not – but I seem to need more help, and I’m afraid of taking pills to curb my appetite. But I may have to resort to them. I was small for many years (size 6) and then took ill, with many years on steroids, and my physical ability to exercise has been curtailed to a great extent. I don’t like ‘me’ and doctors don’t seem to want to help, other than telling me not to eat so much. Does anyone have any suggestions that can really help me – not the usual. I also live off of ss benefits so spending is most limited. Thanks.

Kristal

Reply to  Michelle

Yes. As a woman who has followed it for the last few years, I can honestly say it does. I dropped from a size 8 to a size 2 in just a couple of months with it. I’ve maintained my body at a size 4 by using this diet whenever I need to, if the pounds start to try to creep back on.

One thing I noticed as a woman, is that around my period I get very weak and cranky with this diet. The solution for me was more protein in the form of chicken breasts and black beans. It’s easy to fill up on veggies because you tell yourself you’ll lose more weight if you eat only veggies, but the protein is a must. In the late afternoons I sometimes get so tired and weak on this diet, and I have learned to have carrot sticks and a tupperware container of tuna salad (tuna, mustard, chopped up eggs and tomato) handy. From my experience with my husband, even eating the same stuff as him, I would always get weaker and more tired than him, so a heads up to you: eat lots of protein! 🙂

Very good:)

yes i agree with your food plan completely,

and i must add – that to give yourself the best

functioning supplement available,

on top of your meal plan – make it your ”B” class vitamins.

The ”B” group of vitamins are crucial for full body fuction

at it’s best!.

The B group of vitamins,

actually help in the asimilation of the food we eat

and a lot of other body functions as well.

The B group is often overlooked,

so go and get yourself some bees:)

As a long time fan, I’ve been following this diet 100% strictly for the last few years. It’s helped me maintain and lose whenever I need it, and I love it.

Question: Is Glycyrrhizin processed by the body as a sugar/sucrose? I’ve been drinking Pu-erh tea and I enjoy it with licorice root. It gives a fierce sweetness, but I am concerned that it may be some kind of sugar? I tried reading up on it on several different web pages, but none of them can tell me if the sweet Glycyrrhizin in the root is a sugar or not.

I have been diagnosed as having Hypothyroidism and although I am keeping weight at bay it is a struggle. I am wondering how this diet’s restrictive nature affects this condition? Out of the foof items listed above, which are great by the way, is there an even more extensive selection in the book? How does age factor into this diet (lifestyle change)? Finally, what is the “norm” to expect in terms of realistic goas when applying a weight lifting regimen to this diet. I believe that you truly can lose 30 pounds in a month! I just started my own journey to lose weight. I ballooned up to 252 lbs (from 166 lbs). I am down 21 pounds in 8 1/2 days!

I like that you added these nutrient and mineral potent vegetables to your list:

Spinach

Asparagus

Peas

Mixed vegetables

I found myself adding a purple potato in my juice this morning, along with a full beet.

I’m doing a reset at the moment, as I want to lose weight, flush toxins, clean up my arteries and get healthy! I read the other day that just because you look thin and healthy, doesn’t mean you are healthy on the inside. Someone who pounds fast food burgers / meals, but also runs a lot, may look this but have clogging arteries and other issues that they can’t see.

My desire is to lose weight, live longer and have the ability to keep up with my kids.

I’ve never drank wine, but do find myself consuming 100+ ounces of water each day.

Thank you for writing this article… I know that as I watch what I consume and how frequent I do it I will lose weight.

Unfortunately… There is more to this diet. 18/126, simplified 1/7, people trying this diet, failed in there.. Lol “30 days and 20lbs of fat gone!” Hmm, enough fat to almost fill half a normal wheel barrel. If the diet is successful for anyone, it is metabolic rate and possible meta-genes. The diet is perfect, but, if you want to know the real secret, the way it is possible to lose 20lbs of fat in one month, then let me know. Was on the diet for like 2 wks time..then off the diet for 2 days and eat whatever..then back on…..lost like 14 lbs the first 2 wks and then the weight was just falling off! Drink lots of water and took vitamins as well….my blood pressure and cholesterol lowered! woohoooo!!! I’m almost 14(April:) ) and I weigh about 150lbs (my last doctors appt. said I was 147 but that was a while ago) I really want to lose weight because(when you look in pictures) you’ll see my friends who are all nice and skinny and athletic…. Then you’ll see me 😛 I’ve tried so many things to lose weight(since 3 years ago, when my weight started to rise(5th grade )) but I have trouble doing those things since I’m so unathletic. It’s not that I can’t do sports, it’s that I just hate them. I actually have a ‘build’ that you would see on sporty people (some muscles(mainly my legs ), bigger bones, etc.(without all the extra belly, butt, and thigh and calf fat 😛 )) I’m really hoping this works, because im sick and tired of hearing people (*cough* my mom*cough* ) tell me I’m fat and that I need to exercise to lose weight, and also do all this other junk(weird stretches, gross foods, etc.) just to lose some weight.

After a chain of several years of going from good to worse to bad, I’ve decided that enough is enough, and that something must be done about how I look, and how I feel about myself. Therefore, after reading all of the comments and praise, I have decided to give this a try, in the hopes that I can flip fate around and bring back the person that I used to know.

Here’s hoping that I can check back here in a month or so with some positive results. 🙂

Does it really work…? It doesn’t deepend on the diet so much as you, and your own will power, everyone is different. Try it strictly for a week, don’t be lazy, and see what happens ; )

I agree with you on cutting out the white carbohydrate products. I have lost

25 lbs in less than 30 days by doing such. i work out in the gym 2 times a day.

I am preparing my body for total left knee surgery on 1march2013. I do not

have a choice at 52 years old. I am bone on bone. I spent my younger years

as a health care professional ,athlete, and a 10 year army war veteran in pharmacy. I am well educated about the human body. I also am a single mother of two stunning gentleman 21 and 23 years old. I always try to teach them the power of positive thinking. In order to loose weight you have to truely want to . Good luck even a little bit leads to better health.

This is a fantastic article and I use a similar diiet to this bur what I have found is because I am of a mature age (70) I need to speed up my metabolism to help burn calories as enegetic physical excercise is out of the question.

Raspberry Ketone is the latest weight loss discovery to take television health programs and online health news sites by storm. Ketones, the enzyme that give Raspberries their sweet smell, have recently been found to enhance the production of certain proteins that help speed up the metabolism that concentrates on burning fat cells.

Believe me this really works. Peter

Since no one has seemed to notice my comments, the 70 year old man knows a great secret if combined with this diet. Hopefully people will take his advice. And stop asking questions when the answers are a scroll above at the top of the page.

A side note that I noticed:

I do research on resveratrol and although many believe that drinking red wine will supply the body with enough to make a difference the truth couldn’t be any more different. It would take over 1,000 bottles of wine per day to even see even the slightest effects of resveratrol. There are currently neutraceuticals which claim to be resveratrol but once again, one would have to consume several hundred pills at once in order to gain any benefits. If you ARE interested in reaping the benefits I suggest watching for the first ever released FDA approved drug from the company Sirtris. They are in the process of human trials. I anticipate the release of this miracle drug within the next five years.

Thought I would just inform everyone who might be interested!

Hi, i have to lose weight (about 12 lb in 2 weeks) after Structural Diet – 1200 calories. The diet is very easy, recommends natural products. Now I use products from the list of the most valuable products recommended in Diet. I feel better and I’m not hungry 🙂

Hey guys, obviously, the negative effects of lonng time dieting, ie, carb and calorie restriction, etc, are endless. But, what would one do to reverse these effects, ‘break the diet,’ so to speak without packing on the pounds since they have probably already slowed their metabolism? sorry for not articulating that very well, hah

As much as I would say that the slow carb diet as effective as Tim says it is, I can’t. I have followed the diet strictly for nearly a year and have had mixed results. After a short period of weight loss my results evently slowed then stopped altogether. My body fat percentage, lean mass, and weight have all remained unchanged for the last three months of the diet. Guess I’ll start looking elsewhere for something that is actually effective.

Hello Chris:

Have your mom look up the doctor Oz show on the internet. They had a product on there yesterday that would allow you to lose 4-6 pounds per month, and 2-4 inches of belly fat without any exercise. Hope this helps you.

Hello,

I am 30 years old and working as Software Developer at Saudi Arabia. I am 80+ kilos and have too much belly fat. I am too engaged in my work that I do not get free time for physical exercises. Hence I thought I could reduce my belly fat and weight via food control. I will be helpful if anybody of you advise me what kind of food i need to take.

commenting on the so called simplicity of the meals shown in this article, I am sorry to say that if I had to eat the meals that are shown although they may be nutritious I think I would give up on life as I feel that people should enjoy their food especially with all the variety that is out there and the different cultures that produce foods or us. The meals do not look very attractive and having to eat like that would probably make me sick. I appreciate that what you are saying might be true especially when losing weight is concerned but even culturally looking at those meals would not appeal to me. Please do more research on basic foods and update the menu.

Um I can’t find grass fed organic beef ANYWHERE. I called trader joe’s and they don’t have it anymore nor do they have ethology pourable egg whites. I really don’t like beans but I’ve been eating lentil soup. I skipped 2 days w.o lentils and beans though. I just kept eating boiled chicken breast/thighs,salad, and peas. Today I’m doing the same but adding mixed veggies. Is this OK? Will I still achieve 5 lbs this week???

Finally someone with a usage of his frontal lobe! Cultural experimenting is so important. We are an obese country. Look at say.. Japan?? Ya, thin, not obese. This diet can remain the same but get on some otherly world countries, get it together. You’re the “pro” Tim.

Well, I lost five lbs of fat in a week, but, used beens. But, if you don’t like beans, like me! Look for bush’s best. They have all different flavored, alot of sugar, but if you strain most of the juice, that’s where half the sugar is. =)

My 17-year old daughter, 5’5″+- and 152 lbs would like to lose 20-30lbs by graduation in May. I am strongly against weight-loss drugs and gimmicks. So two weeks ago we started the slow-carb diet following Tim’s suggestions completely. Absolutely no carbs, fruits, or dairy, or any soft drinks at all. Lots of beans and vegetables, eggs for breakfast, small portions of organic, lean meats and fish, barely any oil & vinegar dressing on salads. We made sugar-free jello and almond butter for those bad cravings, which she only had 2-3 times, 1 tsp.

I cook almost every meal and try to make it different and delicious, eliminating “boring” and “tasteless” excuses. All fresh, high quality organic ingredients. I pack her lunch for school (chopped salads with beans, tuna, salsa) and water.

We started on a Monday, had 1 cheat day so far (slice of pizza, fruit smoothie, sushi). Tomorrow is supposed to be cheat day #2. She weighs herself every morning, and it’s been consistent between 148-152, every day. She just weighed herself and it was 153lbs!!!

After two full weeks, we’d expect at least 5lbs loss if not more. Needless to say she was very disappointed and didn’t see why she should continue. She has been super disciplined about it (it was very hard to eliminate breads and pastas).

What are we doing wrong? Any point in continuing?

Thank you for all your help.

ps. Really not sure where to go with this. I’ve checked out several “slow-carb diet” forums out there, but none seemed the right place. Any suggestions are appreciated.

It is scientifically proven, for years now, that dieting, which is not just a diet, but a way of life, if stopped and you retreat to old eating habits, you will gain more wait than before the previous diet. You have to stick to one lifestyle; and live the diet for true results… I know this scientific poof, personally, is 100% true.

And realistically, none of you should be losing more, than 25 lbs every 3 months, so do not lose 30lbs in 30 days, just please trust me people. I will only say that I am more than a professional guys, I hope you’ll listen… If anyone loses this weight, you won’t be happy, healthy, or satisfied. Don’t just read a book.
