The 4-Hour Workweek Principles — 13 Mistakes to Avoid, The Art of Mini-Retirements, and Navigating the Dizziness of Freedom (#836)

Welcome to another episode of The Tim Ferriss Show

This time around, we have a bit of a different format, featuring the book that started it all for me, The 4-Hour Workweek. Even though it was published in 2007, it was one of Amazon’s top-10 Most Highlighted Books of All Time last time I checked in 2017.

Readers and listeners often ask me what I would change or update, but an equally interesting question is: what wouldn’t I change? What stands the test of time and hasn’t lost any potency?

This episode features three timeless chapters from the audiobook of The 4-Hour Workweek:

(1) The chapter on taking mini-retirements, which challenges the deferred-life plan and shows you how to distribute recovery and adventure throughout life instead of saving it all for retirement.

(2) “Filling the Void,” which addresses what happens when you actually achieve lifestyle design and must face the unexpected emotional and philosophical challenges of having a lot of time on your hands.

(3) “13 Mistakes of the New Rich,” where I outline the most common pitfalls I’ve seen people encounter when implementing the book’s principles.

The chapters are narrated by the great voice actor Ray Porter. If you are interested in checking out the rest of the audiobook, which is produced and copyrighted by Blackstone Publishing, you can find it on Audible, Apple, Google, Spotify, Downpour.com, or wherever you find your favorite audiobooks.

Please enjoy!

Great breakdown, Tim! What struck me was the idea that freedom can feel disorienting instead of liberating. Similarly, I’ve discussed how boundaries can be liberating if implemented strategically…but that’s another story.

What I’ve found is that embracing a “one day, one rep” mindset makes freedom not just possible, but sustainable.

In your work with people who’ve taken “micro-retirements,” what patterns have you noticed in how they rebuild structure once the excitement wears off? As an active-duty Marine careerist, that idea resonated with me.

I’d love to explore this more in conversation sometime. I frequently guest on leadership and personal growth podcasts, and this topic sits right at the intersection of the work I do! I will provide much more information about myself upon request.

Long time listener, first time replying. I’m embarrassed to say I’ve never read the 4 hour work week (although obsessed with Tim) but listened to this and dang it hit at the right time. I love his style, the out of the box but somehow relatable way he breaks down the dream that may seem impossible. I wonder if there’s anything he has not done….maybe told himself a story at the time about why he couldn’t…..I’d guess no, or he wouldn’t be who he is 😉 Thanks for all you do Tim, you’re an amazing human!

Hey Tim,

The The 4-Hour Workweek Audible book is not available in Europe due to publishing rights restrictions, I think. Can we expect it to become available soon? I would love to listen to the whole book! Thank you! 🙂

Coyote

A card game by Tim Ferriss and Exploding Kittens

COYOTE is an addictive card game of hilarity, high-fives, and havoc! Learn it in minutes, and each game lasts around 10 minutes.

For ages 10 and up (though I’ve seen six-year olds play) and three or more players, think of it as group rock, paper, scissors with many surprise twists, including the ability to sabotage other players. Viral videos of COYOTE have been watched more than 250 million times, and it’s just getting started.

Unleash your trickster spirit with a game that’s simple to learn, hard to master, and delightfully different every time you play. May the wit and wiles be with you!

Keep exploring.
