MORE BRANDON SANDERSON QUOTES FROM THE INTERVIEW

“Something changed in me that day. I went from a C student to an A student over summer. … Why that change? Because I discovered stories about wizards. I discovered there was something I wanted to do. There was now a reason to get good grades.”
— Brandon Sanderson

“Promise, progress, payoff. That is what makes people love stories and read through on a macro scale.”
— Brandon Sanderson

“One important mindset that is kind of a ground rule is remembering, as a writer, that the piece of art is not necessarily just the story you’re creating, that you are the piece of art. The time you spend writing is improving you as a writer and that is the most important thing. The book is almost a side product … to the fact that you are the art. And if you know that, it helps a lot.”
— Brandon Sanderson

“My superpower is to be an artist raised by an accountant, and I’ve always had a bit of that entrepreneurial sense.”
— Brandon Sanderson

“I heard that your first five books are generally terrible. I said, ‘Well, that’s good. I don’t have to be good yet.’ It took a lot of pressure off me. I said, ‘I’m going to write six, and the first five I’m not going to send out to any publishers.’”
— Brandon Sanderson

“If you even want to reach your own audience, you have to have an escape velocity of attention. You have to break through these barriers preventing even your fan base from seeing what’s happening.”
— Brandon Sanderson

“Can you dig a little deeper into who this character is, instead of adding a new one to make your story wider, but more shallow?”
— Brandon Sanderson

“What are you going to get when you come to one of my books? You’re going to get science-fiction worldbuilding and a fantasy story. You’re going to get people discovering how magic works that’s repeatable, and they’re going to be able to use it in order to solve problems and make their lives better.”
— Brandon Sanderson

“Always err on the side of what’s awesome.”

Great episode. Really appreciate the long form podcast for this discussion. From starting Tim’s podcast on Spotify, I had no idea the show notes were so extensive and in depth.
However, the one thing I came here looking for is the software Brandon mentioned to track the feedback from his test readers… Unfortunately, while I found things in the show notes I never expected to find, I didn’t find that here.

During the episode, Brandon mentioned a software application he uses to engage his beta readers in dialogue about his books. This sounds like a great application for holding book discussions. He could not remember the name during the episode. Would it be too late to get it from him now, along with a link to download the application ourselves?

‘m glad you enjoyed it.
In just two weeks, I, too, have embarked on creating something akin to a novel, and it feels serendipitous to come across this content at this moment. I believe what I’m working on might be a world first. Inspired by the values and stories you share, Tim Ferriss, I am preparing to host a Writing Exhibition in South Korea titled “Korean Titans Speak to Titans Around the World.”
Although it’s not a novel, I am also in the process of creating a dedicated eBook as a tribute to you. And now, I’ve started to envision a new dream—to one day become a #1 New York Times bestselling author.
Creative writing has truly captured my heart!

Awesome! Did this come up from the post where you asked for suggestions? Many people suggested him :).

By the way, Cory Doctorow, whom Brandon talks about, is also awesome. Would be cool if you can have him on the podcast as well. I think he may be one of those people known by less than 10% of your audience that is worth interviewing. He was also mentioned in many Seth Godin episodes!

Will you use your platform to address the current administration’s effort to transform constitutional democracy into authoritarian rule? I hope so. Yea, some people hope this admin will be friendly to psychedelics–but even if they were: at what cost?

This was a fantastic episode. I hope for more about fiction writing. Even a Tim only episode about how he researched and learned before writing Cockpunch would be amazing.

Fiction was the key piece that brought me from the lowest reading group in my first grade class to top of my class. In a world of self help books, there is so much to be learned from fiction. It takes us out of our own ego and into a world where we can feel, learn, and grow. I think our world would be a better place if more people read fiction.

My key takeaway from the episode:

Promise, progress, payoff.

Tim, I’m on the progress side of my journey creating a revolutionary nonprofit called The Community Grocer. We are launching in the next year = payoff. I view my business as an evolving story, where the payoff will be its launch and success.

2026 SXSW – I want to be able to share this story! Putting this out there as a goal to manifest and as a request. Grateful for your stories throughout the years. They’re an inspiration.

I have a question and I appreciate it if you choose to answer here, by email, or in the no book community.

I am flying to Austin to join the live show on March 8th, and I have got a ticket for the Diggnation event. Does that allow me in the Tim Ferriss show as well, or do I need to do anything else for that?
Thank you.
Love,
Safa

I thoroughly enjoyed this episode. Any insight into writers always interests me greatly, and I had already read Stephen King’s, “On Writing,” which I thought was valuable to me as an aspiring writer. I have ordered “on hold” from my local library Orson Scott Card’s book regarding writing for science fiction and fantasy. I thought that Mr. Sanderson’s comments and insights throughout this interview were stellar. Thank you for interviewing him.
