Tim Ferriss Interviews Arnold Schwarzenegger on Psychological Warfare (And Much More) (#60)

IMG_7091

In this episode, I interview the one and only Arnold Schwarzenegger… at his kitchen table.

In our conversation, we dig into lessons learned, routines, favorite books, and much more, including many stories I’ve never heard anywhere else.  I’m also giving away amazing goodies for this episode, so be sure to read this entire post.

As a starting point, we cover:

  • The Art of Psychological Warfare, and How Arnold Uses It to Win
  • How Twins Became His Most Lucrative Movie (?!?)
  • Mailing Cow Balls to Politicians
  • How Arnold Made Millions — BEFORE His Acting Career Took Off
  • How Arnold Used Meditation For One Year To Reset His Brain
  • And Much More…

Listen on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts.

You can find the transcript of this episode here. Transcripts of all episodes can be found here.

Ep 60: Tim Ferriss Interviews Arnold Schwarzenegger on Psychological Warfare (And Much More)

### NOTE: THE BELOW HAS SINCE ENDED. THANKS! ###

I WANT TO GIVE YOU GOODIES:

1) A signed copy of Arnold’s autobiography, Total Recall, personalized for you by Arnold himself.

2) A roundtrip ticket anywhere in the world Continental flies, $1,000 USD cold hard cash, or a long dinner with me in SF (and a flight from anywhere in the domestic US).  Pick one of the three.

To get both 1 and 2, all you have to do is this:

1) Promote the hell out of this episode this week, driving clicks to the iTunes page (ideal) for my podcast, this direct streaming link, or this blog post. If helpful, the shorter link fourhourworkweek.com/arnold forwards to this blog post.

2) Leave a comment on this post telling me what you did (including anything quantifiable), no later than this Friday, Feb 6, at 6pm PT. Comments must be submitted by 6pm PT. It’s OK if they’re in moderation and don’t appear live before 6pm. Note: You must include #arnoldpod at the top of your comment to be considered!

3) Within 7 days hence, I and my panel of magic elves will select the winner: he or she who describes in their comment how they drove the most downloads/listens.

4) That’s it! Remember: Deadline is 6pm PT this Friday, Feb 6.  No extensions.

5) Of course, void where prohibited, no purchase required, you must be over 21, no minotaurs, etc.

Really enjoyed how you disected Arnold. Enjoyed specially the twist for the bricklaying business, it’s incredible how differentiation (in appearence) and raising up the price made them to be perceived as a premium business. It remembered me to the series “O Negocio” (from Brasil), where they implement the same twist but for VIP prostitution, genius, if you haven’t seen the series yet I highly recommend it since it has lots of marketing tips and tricks.

To promote your podcast I went a little bit further and wrote a post about the story of Arnold for my blog that gets around 70k visits per day. I’m tracking the referrals with pretty link so you should get a decent chunk of traffic from me.

Tim, I am kinda of a love/hate reader of yours. If you are interested in a non-hostile and constructive discussion with an east bay anti-capitalist let me know. You may find my perspectives and stories interesting, or not I don’t know. I have lost 20 lbs since the first of the year on the SCD and have applied your efficacy methods to my work and studies including my sustainable food justice work. We already have some mutual associations believe it or not. I grew up in the hills of Napa, was in the USAF, worked on an Avocado farm in Chile, etc. Here is a video of me singing to the president, Think of it as my audition for this lol: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5uhKYQo5AqQ Yes that is Will.I.am with his jaw dropped, we were that good…

(P.S. not a wing nut and won’t pitch you to donate to anything ;))

Hi Tim,

I have been enjoying your podcasts immensely. The Arnold podcast was enjoyable and kept me smiling. I usually don’t pay much attention to Hollywood stars, but I was floored by how great that interview was.

Arnold’s insight and style kept me engaged. It was as if I could feel his presence coming through the audio.

I have a whole new appreciation for the man.

You are definitely someone I could converse with over good wine and good food, so I promoted your podcast on:

Personal FB page – https://www.facebook.com/StormSeeker777

FB page for my blog – https://www.facebook.com/betweenthetemplesblog

Twitter page – https://twitter.com/Chris_L_Harris

Thank you for everything you do.

Dear Tim and Magic Elves (both Keebler & Tolkien),

After googling ‘What is Schnitzel?’ I sent a push notification to a segment of my app users 18 – 35 yrs old, which according to Parse comes out to about 163,000 devices. My app is a muse inspired by one of your blog posts. I promoted the shorter fourhourworkweek.com/arnold link because it’s more readable and would make it more likely to be opened. I promoted the link to just a segment of my list instead of spamming everyone because I wanted to minimize my opt out rate and because my audience skews younger and the podcast has some swearing in it. I have already started to see a small spike in opt outs and some customer service emails that say ‘What was that?’, but I thought this would be an interesting experiment instead of just blasting to social media.

Hanging with you would be awesome, but I would probably end up asking you for too much advice and I’m trying to become more self reliant when it comes to ‘what do I do next?’. It would be more fun and mutually beneficial to meet you another time after I’m successful. So if I’m selected I would love to win a plane ticket to see some family that couldn’t visit over Thanksgiving or use the cash to reinvest into my muse.

Hope your podcast sees a spike in traffic!

-Mike

Dear Tim – First of all thank you so much for the time, energy, and passion that you put into every interview you do, and every book that you write. Thank you for the opportunities that you present to your audience, and for being so real in everything that you do. It is recognized and it is appreciated.

Arnold Schwarzenegger… such a fascinating man, I absolutely loved this interview. I am entering to participate in the #ArnoldPod contest. I happily posted the link to your podcast on my personal Twitter @cpf44, Facebook and Pinterest pages. I posted the link on the same three social media outlets of an ecommerce site that I manage @stockngo. This reaches a combined audience of over 55k between all channels. I also went and purchased a business domain name (a business in the making, using Shopify platform of course) so that I could issue an official press release to help spread the word beyond my own personal networks. The press release can be found here: http://prlog.org/12422738

As previously stated, I am in the process of starting my own business – the chance to meet with you and pick your brain is absolutely priceless to me. When you meet me, you will find that I am extremely passionate, ambitious, intelligent, and pretty damn fun. I have big goals, a big heart, and if you choose me, I promise… I will make a difference in this world.

With much respect – Carrie

I did some quick split testing and ad testing for you on Facebook Ads! I didn’t have a lot of time to run new tests but drove exactly 461 clicks to your pod cast with Arnold. It cost me only 69.96 – pretty solid for a first test.

At first I built 2 simple opt-in pages using my favorite landing page tool (it’s way better then unbounce or lead pages). You can view the quick test LP’s here: https://imperial.wishpond.com/arnold-tim/ (you may only be able to see one) – check out their service – wishpond.com (I’m not affiliated)

That test wasn’t a huge success with a 10% opt-in rate and since the contest was to drive the most traffic I figured I better remove the opt in and direct them straight to the desired goal for the best chance of winning.

I created 2 Facebook ads with the intensions of testing different countries…Ad1 I targeted all males in Austria (for obvious reasons) who were interested in Arnold…

The 2nd ad I targeted Canada, males, 18-65, interested in Arnold and you (it was about a 165,000 demo)

I was tempted to cheat the system and send 1000’s of clicks to your site from cheaper countries to advertise on FB but thought I’d keep to targeted audiences. (Kind of wish I did as numbers would be MUCH MUCH higher but less valuable to you…)

Here is a screen shot of the ad (if I had more time I could of tested a lot more headlines and images – but hey, you only gave me about a day and I didn’t want to spend a fortune haha

I also took a screen shot of the ad results here:comment image?dl=0

Here is the bitly link stats as well (this number is higher thanks to the other ad and viral traffic)l: https://bitly.com/1zUxEMh+

Now, for the next strategy – I leveraged 5 Facebook pages I have (I don’t want to list them here but they are very engaged, females, in the USA – about 1,000,000 of them I built via FB ads.

I realize it’s not your perfect target market with this interview but hey! Who doesn’t love Arnold? haha I used the same link to keep it simple.

If you want proof just email me and I’ll send you the links to my Facebook pages.

If you made it this far reading…thanks and I hope I have a good chance because this is a long ass comment!

It would be fun to meet you and swap traveling stories…(basically ran my business / traveled the 4 hour work week the last 2-3 years)

Either way, loved the podcast as well as many others – thanks!

Joel

P.S. Getting a new targeted visitor about every 3 seconds right now…I’ll keep ads and my viral FB posts going till about 6:00PM! See where my finaly number is at!

Hello Tim and team of magic elves!

My name is Jillian Birkholz. I am a senior English and communication student and the Marketing Intern for Cherrico Pottery, LLC. Joel, the owner and potter, is a big fan of yours and has turned me on to your work. We really enjoyed your funny and inspiring interview with Arnold Schwarzenegger and wanted to share it with our own followers. Here’s what we did:

Tuesday: Joel read your blog post and immediately composed his own blog post on the ways you’ve directly grown his company and career.

Wednesday: I proofread and published Joel’s blog post on his WordPress website, in Mailchimp to his 528 person mailing list, across 5 social media avenues (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and Flikr) and in 8 Facebook groups focused on pottery, each with as many as 8,800 members. Joel also offered his followers $20 pottery gift certificates if they would simply check out your website. Here is a link to the post:

http://www.cherricopottery.com/2015/02/04/cosmic-pottery-mugs-how-one-tweet-increased-my-website-traffic-by-3000-in-one-day-2/

Thursday: Joel posted the blog again on the above 5 social media sites and Facebook groups. Next, Joel launched 2 paid Facebook campaigns for $20 each. Post #1 linked to the blog post and showed an image of Cosmic Mugs, targeted to Joel’s followers, reaching 3,688 people and 160 actions. Post #2 linked to the blog post, with an image of a pottery mug and the cover of the 4 Hour Workweek. It focused on 18-45 year old individuals outside of Joel’s network, reaching 3340 people and 42 actions. Tags for both campaigns included: entrepreneurship, business, marketing, e-commerce, pottery, art, fine art, cosmos, and science.

We paid $40 in facebook ads and gave away $20 gift certificates to 16 different people who emailed us to say they checked out your site, bought The 4 Hour Workweek book or listened to your podcast. It also resulted in selling another Cosmic Mug!

In conclusion, our goal was to show you that we can responsibly represent your work in a professional manner, while driving traffic to you in innovative ways that benefit our careers mutually. Joel is confident that he can continue to follow your examples to build a pottery business that reaches over six figures this year and inspires millions of other artists and entrepreneurs to follow our examples towards success, wealth and happiness.

Thanks again for sharing this awesome interview,

Jillian Birkholz

Since I don’t have a large following or community to reach out to, I decided to use CrowdSpeaking to create one. Within 36hrs I have created a successful campaign which will blast a message out to over 701,000 social media users at 3pm PT. This is the campaign’s url https://headtalker.com/campaigns/spreading-the-word-experiment/

To attract supporters I utilised existing networks on Facebook (utilizing business groups), Twitter and LinkedIn. I also researched Twitter users who either recently posted about Tim or were in his extended network of influencers. These tactics provided good returns and included the support of smaller scale influencers such as Robb Wolf and Jayson Gaignard.

The message that is blasted out uses a Bitly link so that I will be able to track the level of engagement with the link. The Bitly link directs users towards Tim’s iTunes page. I don’t have stats yet on the success of campaign since it blast out in a little over 90 minutes from writing this message.

Rather than making the message about Tim, I focussed on a message which would attract the most curiosity. The message reads:

“Awesome interview: #Schwarzenegger on growing up poor, psychological warfare, being a millionaire & bulls testicles http://bit.ly/1I3WBsw

Good luck reaching the 1 millions downloads Tim. Hopefully I get a chance to grab that dinner. It’s be amazing 🙂

This is one of my favorites. Right up there with….well all of them. And since dinner and signed goodies was part of a suggestion I made in the beginning, I should probably kick it in gear and do something.

So here’s the plan, not only promoting to my own email list of 150K, FB of 15k, twitter fans of 15k, I’ve also outsourced using Fiverr and setup a weekend blast to over 12 million Facebook fans, 1.2 million Twitter and Instagram followers. As others have stated, without an affiliate link to quantify results I’m unsure how to track results, however total investment will be mmmmmm 4 hours this week. Regardless, this was a interview worth spreading around.

I used social media as a tool to reach out to the most number of people in the shortest time. Instead of going the usual places where everyone else has already posted. I posted on less common places where interest of Arnold or the interview could be high. In summary, what I did was to put out interesting bits of contents from the podcast to the relevant people. I tweeted the books recommendations, chess playing, meditation, fact that Arnold never auditions, people Arnold considers a success, fact that Arnold did real estate and masonry work before his acting career took off, also added in obvious ones like his fan page, body building and 80s/90s kids etc..

Tim,

ITS SUMMER TIME IN RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL. With Carnaval looming just around the corner, Rio is packed with tourists from all around the world. Carnaval is the time of the year where Rio De Janeiro receives more tourists than ANY OTHER TIME OF THE YEAR! Where is the most densely populated area in Rio De Janeiro? COPACABANA BEACH!

Here is what I did:

1) I paid a professional artist to build a giant (10 foot tall, 15 foot wide) and elaborate sand castle on the famous Copacabana beach boardwalk, and had him write #TimFerriss in 12 inch letters just below the castle! (This is not a joke, read below for info on how to see it) He agreed to keep the castle erected with the Tim Ferriss hash tag for ONE WEEK.

2) Literally hundreds of thousands of tourists will pass by this gigantic sand castle during the next week, and thousands will snap pictures of this amazing castle structure. When they post this picture on their social media, the hundreds of friends from the thousands that took the photo will see the giant #TimFerriss hashtag below the castle, for a total reach of hundreds of thousands of ORGANIC viewers. So what do you think they will do?

3) This hashtag will incite curiosity among the hundreds of thousands of viewers, and they will search Instagram to find out just what is going on with this Tim Ferriss hash tag. What will they find when they search the #TimFerris hash tag on Instagram? Why don’t you try it and see for yourself!

4) Next, I created an Instagram profile called “@TimFerrissShow” , then proceeded to purchase 3,500 fake followers so that when strangers visited this Instagram profile, it looks legitimate and they would know how popular this show is. (Social norms go a long way in marketing)

5) I proceeded to post a GIANT montage of 9 instagram pictures and uploaded simultaneously to the #TimFerriss hash tag and created an image that is incredibly hard to miss. (SEE FOR YOURSELF: #TimFerriss on Instagram)

6) When people click on any of the photos in the montage, they will find a direct link to your latest podcast with Arny! Since the giant sand castle is in Brazil, I posted the information on the Instagram account in Portuguese, with the hopes that you can reach a whole new, previously untapped Brazillian market (most people here can understand English, but are more likely to give it a shot if the description is in their own language) Side note: I became functional in Portuguese in just 2 months using the tactics I learned in 4HC.

7) Boom. Mind blown.

8) I also posted to all my social media outlets including Twitter, Facebook, my Blog (13,500 followers) and LinkedIn.

WHY I SHOULD WIN THIS COMPETITION:

I SOLEMLY PROMISE that if I win, I will donate 100% of the money to a non-profit organization that supports English language education in the Favala by the name of Vidigal. That’s right, I will give away the entire $1,000 and I will not keep $1 of the winnings. I will give it all away to the people in Brazil that need it much more than I do. I will post pictures of me awarding the money, as well as picture updates of what the money has done for this school in the Favela of Vidigal, after it has been spent. All of which can be found on my blog after I win the money http://www.TheSoulProprietor.net

I’m keeping the signed book from Arny. That’s for me.

The truth is, I have hopes that if I give the money away, I will win and you will still have dinner with me even though I was supposed to only choose one of the three options listed under item (2) in the contest rules. If this is impossible, maybe we can settle for a skype chat? If not, I will be happy just knowing that you at least know who I am!

I am a huge fan of yours, you have been a big influence on my life, and I owe my success to you.

Alister

//Was trying to make it clear for a person who might not be in Russian social media or apps. Some things were explained harshly. But please give it a shot.

The post is promoted to 119’088 people in the VK (Russian Facebook) community of Podster (Russian iTunes Podcast). The community consists of business people who knows English.

Link to the promo on VK => https://vk.com/wall-35524891_13733

The VK post itself is the repost from Tim Ferriss’ Russian community where I am posting Russian translation of Tim Ferriss show. Yeah, I’m the Russian voice of Tim. Don’t you want to hear it?

You can listen to podcast on Podster => http://ferriss.podster.fm/

Just 3 “in-between-sodes” were recorded so far but this is just the beginning.

//Touching success story

I would be honored to meet with Tim since he is one of my “Masters”:

2009: 4HWW was absorbed by me in my first semester at university. I built my first business and it was on autopilot checking on clients once a day and the rest of the day learning how to shoot a blockbuster. The last one ended up being art film which won a few European movie awards.

2013: I lost 10 pounds in a week, then a few pounds each week normalizing my weight from 178 to 160 pounds. Because of 4HB obviously. Also I began to learn nutrition myself.

2014: I’ve recently bought 4HC and can’t wait to start.

Thanks hell a lot,

Владимир

Great podcast! You need to convince Arnold to do a “Ask Arnold” bit on your podcast every few weeks. Just a quick two minute answer to listeners questions.

I went old school grassroots on you and just told anybody/everybody that will listen to me about this episode. Quantifiable? Yea not so much but it is these grains of sands that build the mightiest of castles.

“Wether you think you can, or you think you can’t — you’re right.” Henry Ford

February 5th

7PM – Enter marriage counseling session with my wife. This is our second session. We have been married 4 years this July and have been together for almost 9.

7:34 – Wife says that she wants a divorce.

7:35 – I agree with her, it’s the healthiest course of action given the situation.

9:30 – I’m sitting in bed and open Facebook to see that Tim Ferriss has a contest running. I’m immediately intrigued and click on the link and read the guidelines.

9:33 – Challenge Excepted! Then I decide to delay my usual sleep schedule because I’m too excited. I explain that Tim is using Parkinson’s law to my at present wife. I think she gets it and I leave the bedroom.

9:41 – Blew some tea.

9:44 – I look over the comments on Facebook post about the challenge.

9:45 – I come across some half naked photos in with the comments. I hope this isn’t a beauty contest because I don’t know how to share your podcast with a half naked picture of myself. I finish skimming through the 89 comments.

9:50 – Note I must use #AronoldPod, on top of the comment.

10:01 – Objective, to drive traffic to the site: fourhourworkweek.com/arnold

10:02 – Brainstorm:

Put the contest as a thing I must get done today in my 5 Minute Journal.

1 Minute, 1 Habit, 1% Happier video

Tweet and Facebook all past guest of The Tim Ferriss Podcast. Tell them to go to fourhourworkweek.com/arnold.

Set up through Hootsuite to post every 73 minutes on my Tweeter and Facebook. Tell others to go fourhourworkweek.com/arnold.

Keep running post until well after the deadline for good measure.

Thank Tim for the challenge and for taking your mind off your impending divorce.

Schedule 3 twenty-minute meditations throughout the day to keep focus.

Every 20 minutes take 5-minute breaks to exercise, following Pavel Tsatsouline recommendation.

Coach.me – Share Tim Ferriss habit and add Video.

Now Tim, I would have tried to outsource some of this work but with less than a 24-hour deadline I can’t.

Carry around 4 Hour Chef book, if just for the sheer weight!

Check the website to see how many words I can post.

10:04 – Posted on my Tweeter and Facebook page fourhourworkweek.com/arnold, with the comment “good stuff, no great stuff.”

10:08 – Mission Statement: 24-Hour campaign, the best I can do is to put a bug in as many ears as possible about the Arnold episode.

10:10 – I realize that this challenge is in line with one of my goals for the year, connecting with Tim Ferriss. I don’t set out to compete in this challenge, I’m setting out to win this thing!

10:12 – Figure out what Magic Elves like and if they exist?

If I had more time I would have run a 99Designs campaign for this progject.

I head over to Onnit.com to have them overnight me some Alpha BRAIN. Unfortunately, it’s too late in the day to get it tomorrow.

Use Scrivener to write the competition entry.

10:14 – I Tweet and Facebook Arnold Swartzinager fourhourworkweek.com/arnold with the comment: This guy does a spot on job with your accent! Check it out –

The tweet goes through. Facebook doesn’t and says sorry, your wall post could not be added at this time. Please try again later. Damnit Swartzinager! I’ll be back!

10:20 – With a solid non-interrupted 36 minutes of prep work I’m off to sleep. 3 am here I come.

February 6th

3:49 Am – Awake, be sure to thank Tim for the 90 minutes of restless sleep with thoughts of his challenge.

“A task is only as big as its smallest part.”

5:00 – I’ve gotten my morning routine done which consists of:

16 Ounces of ice cold water

5 Minute Journal

Stretching

30 grams of protein

10 minutes of exercise, treadmill

20-minute meditation using Headspace app (Thank Tim for having heard about it on his podcast.)

5:30 – At local Starbucks with the game plan. 1st I’m going to script 1 Minute, 1 Habit, 1 % Happier piece explaining how listening to The Tim Ferriss Show will make you Happier. Then phase two is to edit it and put it on my YouTube Channel. Then build link on the website page for it.

7:09 – Having finished everything from above, now I’m going to go follow and tweet this: 1PercentHappier.com Says, Listening to The Tim Ferriss Show will make you 1% Happier. http://youtu.be/OfNOPwi_W9c to the past guests of The Tim Ferriss Show plus .

7:55 – Finished tweeting everyone. Now time to write the post for the challenge.

8:23 – I run into my mom’s cancer doctor at the coffee shop. We chatted and he asked me what I was working on. I then got to share The Tim Ferriss Show with him. He brought up the podcast on his phone and who knows Tim you may have another listener.

9:02 – Take a break from writing to go back and tweet all past guests again.

9:27 – I received a text from my wife asking if I’d take my soon to be ex-stepson to his archery tournament this afternoon. I mean is that right, she will become my ex-wife and the kids will become my ex-stepsons. I have a whole new terminology I’m going to have to live with. So I’m 36 and will officially be able to mark divorce off the old bucket list. But honestly, there is no success without failure and you never know if something will work if you don’t take your shots.

9:49 – Computer froze while doing retweets. I was trying to work faster by keeping multi-tabs open. It’s amazing how quick a thousand dollar laptop can turn into a POS. So I forced quit Chrome, reopened and I’m back in business. At this point, I’m pretty much on auto-pilot. I’m going to set up all tweet windows so that in 90 minutes I can retweet everyone.

9:58 – Added Share Tim Ferriss Habit with the video to my http://www.Coach.me/FitnessChris page. I also go ahead and check that habit off for the day.

10:15 – @Nc7TIKiHSLN2S04 Favorited my tweet

10:18 – Spent last 20 minutes following your followers and messaging them: 1PercentHappier.com Says, Listening to The Tim Ferriss Show will make you happier. http://youtu.be/OfNOPwi_W9c

10:25 – I keep getting caught up in thought, wondering what would have happened if I wouldn’t have gotten her to go to counseling. How long would this have gone on? I had known for a good year and a half that this needed to be done. One reason I didn’t do it last year this time was because my mom’s breast cancer had come back. It had metastasized itself into skin cancer. So 4 months to the day after my 35 birthday I was motherless. The cancer had basically boiled her while squeezing her stomach, chest, and back. All the while trapping water in her lungs. In the end, she suffocated to death while being heavily sedated in hospice care. My dad, her husband of over 40 years was laying on a small mattress on the floor beside her when the nurse woke him to let him know that she was gone.

10:26 – @selldigitaldlds Favorited my tweet

10:27 – @BobbyG1981 Favorited my tweet

10:38 – Following people on twitter and then messaging them links seems to have the best return. It’s also the best use of my time right now between retweeting past guest of the show.

11:54 – Drove home, had a healthy salad. Time to get my second meditation on! Then back at it, time is ticking away.

11:55 – @KKBanners – Favorited my tweet

12:45 – I could barely keep awake during meditation. So I took a 20 power nap. Woke up to see that Marc Goodman at 2:05 favorited my tweet! Took another 10 minute meditation and brewed some pomegranate tea. Now it’s time to retweet the past guest again. I’m shooting for more efficiency this time.

1:02 – Most efficient this last time around. It took right around 10 minutes with a better wi-fi signal at home. I’ve figured out the best way to do it and have shaved 30 minutes off my original time.

1:25 – So yeah my wife and I have a couples massage that she purchased for my birthday and is scheduled to be used this Saturday on Valentines day. That should be interesting. If anything I’m sure it will be unforgettable, our last Valentines day together. I can tell you this, I’m not getting her any flowers this year.

2:00 – Just got done following and messaging more of your followers. It’s nice that over 20 of your followers have in turn followed me.

2:25 – Clean and sweep main floor in preparation for tonight’s meeting. I still need to transfer my notes to an Epub file and put on my nook.

2:33 – @mysocialfam Favorited my tweet

3:00 – Retweeted most of the past guest again. This tweeter message popped up. This request looks like it might be automated. To protect our users from spam and other malicious activity, we can’t complete this action right now. Please try again later. I figure if I’m irritating them they will get over it. I’m doing it all in the name of The Tim Ferriss Show and because they know you, they should understand. As you would say, don’t ask for permission you can also ask later for forgiveness.

4:00 – You now my wife really is doing me a favor. I’m not a quitter and I don’t break my promises. If she wasn’t pulling the trigger on this thing how many years would have gone by living in a marriage where she loved me but wasn’t in love with me. Bottom line sometimes two people are better off separated. They can be happier without the commitment of each other.

4:46 – I tell you Tim, I wouldn’t change a thing. I was talking with a good friend of mine about my situation a month ago. He then told me a story about how he was with someone and helped her out of a really bad situation but in the end they didn’t stay together. He said this, “sometimes relationships end because they have served their purpose.” If I hadn’t fallen in love with my wife, I wouldn’t have moved back to Kentucky and I wouldn’t have had that time with my mom. I would have missed out on what was the last 8 years of her life. I wouldn’t change a thing. Sometimes relationships have served their purpose.

Thank you Tim for this opportunity. I’m proud of the work that I did today, it was fun. All I was doing was dropping pebbles into a stream, you never know where the ripples will end up. Who knows they may even affect your Magic Elves and we can have dinner in San Fransisco? If not, that is alright also. I feel that our paths will cross eventually either way. It could be sooner or later. Until then my friend keep up the good work and I promise you I will keep digesting it and sharing it.

He who gives the most, gets the most.

Sincerley,

Chris

My favourite interview is your non-interview with Peter Thiel. The guy is such a genius at creating billion-dollar-value-producing-business that I can’t believe you didn’t reschedule the interview so that you could have more of a back-and-forth instead of a simple Q&A.

PLEASE do another interview with Peter Thiel as you did with Peter Diamandis.

Great idea for a contest and a fun podcast with Arnold. I have good memories of growing up watching many of his movies with my dad.

I posted about the contest with a link to your podcast and blog on my FB (my posts are friends only so you can’t see it, but I promise it’s there), on my Twitter (https://twitter.com/rebekowitz/status/563820966598672384), and Instagram (http://instagram.com/p/yxrmoBoVgp).

To help promote your podcast I did the following:

Posted on my business FB, Twitter, Google+, 3 times – aggregate following of 941 people – reach unknown due to Twitter analytics hiccup, engagement of 3

Asked my wife to post on her blog fan page and tweet, which she agreed to – aggregate following of 9532 – Total FB reach of 230, engagement 2, currently Twitter data is unknown

Posted on my personal FB (3 times), Twitter (3 times), and Linked Page (only 1 time) – aggregate following of 1965 (friends, followers, connections) – roll up of Twitter data below.

Re-tweeted my personal Tweet from my business account and re-tweeted my business tweet from my personal account – aggregated impressions of 36 and an engagement of 7

I shared both the iTunes link and the website link in order to use two different pictures in my FB/Google+ feeds, and used the hastag #arnoldpod on all posts.

This data is current as of 2:25 PM PST

Good luck, hope it helped out!

#arnoldpod “How The Terminator’s COW BALLS Helped Me Help Tim Reach 48,032 Potential Fans For $30…” – Joel Erway

I was nervous my Facebook account would be shutdown when I did this, but for Tim it was worth it… 🙂

I wrote a summary of my strategies and results in a Word document and uploaded them here:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B7ded76ZxEY8SXJqN0RLMFcwZ00/view?usp=sharing

I hope that works (I included pictures there). If not, below is the full article. Sorry, it’s longer, but I wanted to make sure I made the deadline! I had a lot of fun with this 🙂

Joel

——–

I was nervous my Facebook account would be shutdown when I did this, but for Tim it was worth it… 🙂

This was a lot of fun. How many times do you see a prominent role model run a contest through marketing experiments?

I got a late jump on this (started near midnight Feb 05), and wish I saw it earlier, but I gave it my best. Actually, I was pretty impressed by the quick results (and jealous that my personal ads don’t do nearly as well…)

Here’s the breakdown of how I achieved my results:

Step 1. Identify the goal: simple. Drive more traffic to Tim’s content (he mentions the iTunes page is ideal, so that’s where I sent it). Must produce quantifiable results.

Step 2. Create a game plan. I went back and forth with this one. I’m not that technical, and could only really think of one way to track true, accurate results through promotion that I have any experience with – Facebook Ads. I could have hired some dude on Fiverr or ODesk to promote the hell out of this, but I have no idea if those promotions were legit. And, there’s a lot of fraud out there. Tim deserves better than that.

Step 3. Identify the target. Targeting FB audience members can be tricky. If done incorrectly, one can generate unwanted visitors. So I needed to figure out how to target the right audience. So who do we think Tim might want to listen to his podcast? Other podcasters, of course.

And we know Tim wants world domination so he probably wants to dominate the podcast chart rankings. I assumed because of Tim’s popularity, he was probably already ranked pretty high, and I assumed right. But not high enough… (Invisibilia, we’re looking at you!)

At the time, he was ranked #6 in the U.S. according to iTunescharts.net. Hmmm…. I wonder if those podcasts have Facebook pages and followings? Yup!

FYI – I targeted only the countries that iTunescharts.net measured rankings for (Canada, US, UK, Australia, Brazil, France, Italy, German, Spain) for a potential reach of 16M people. I also included Arnold’s fan page audience.

Step 4. Creative. This was a little risky. I wanted to use something that obviously grabbed the attention of fans, but encouraged them to click through. Obviously, using Tim and Arnold’s faces was a no-brainer to connect

But I needed that pattern-interrupt. Something to catch the eye. So I scrolled through Tim’s blog post on the podcast. And there it was.

Cow Balls.

How can someone NOT look at that? Now, the only problem… will my Facebook account get banned if I pay to advertise the words COW BALLS in big, red, bold letters?

Apparently it’s fair game 🙂

Add an OK headline (could have been GREATLY improved, I know… but it was late), and pose a question, and I was ready to go.

Step 5. Execute. As much as I love Tim, I wasn’t prepared to dump $1,000 running an ad the day before the contest ended without any idea if the ad would shutdown my Facebook account. That could be pretty costly. But $30? Sure, what the hell.

At 16M potential reach, I figured I’d hit 20k-40k people and I was pretty close. I set the lifetime budget at $30 and went to bed.

Step 6. The results. Very impressed with what happened. Not only did I get 441 clicks to his website, but over 48,000 people got exposure to the podcast in just under 24 hours and 7 likes!. I’m sure this is a drop in the bucket compared to Tim’s 5M+ regular visitors to his site, but it’s worth a shot 🙂

We ended up with a 0.373% CTR which I thought was pretty good… considering that I targeted both mobile devices, desktop and right hand news feed. I can only go from past experience, which for me was only Desktop News Feed ads. And a good CTR for that was 1%. More impressions are given for various platforms so I was satisfied with a non-optimized ad at 0.373%. But even MORE impressed at $0.08 per website click!

Tim! Christian Fitzharris here. I promoted the hell out of your show and the interview in the following ways. 1) I put this page all over my Facebook and had friends post it too. 2) I wrote a fun song promoting your podcast and the interview with Arnold and created a jingle for fourhourworkweek.com/arnold and had friends download it and post it on their pages. 3) I posted links to both my jingle for your show AND the interview on Twitter five times a day for the last four days. 4) I posted the links to the podcast and the song on anything marked “Arnold Schwarzenegger” or “motivation Arnold…”on You Tube 5) My Tweets were favorited by @FansofArnold and others on Twitter. 6) I told stories from the podcast to people at my work and they downloaded the interview to enjoy as well. 7) I printed up the picture of you and Arnold and wrote out the fourhourworkweek.com/Arnold and led people there in person If you missed my song here’s the link: http://tinyurl.com/kg93myf

Hi Tim,

I have created a new bit.ly account and created 3 different links that I have shared with maven’s in my network based on the 3 categories I feel I am best networked in. Entertainment (stand up comedy), Health and fitness, and Business/sucess. After making a list of my core Maven’s I sent them the corresponding link for each category telling them to listen, learn, and share.

I have sent you the log in and password for the bit,ly account as a message to your confirmed page on facebook. By searching my name Bryan Maine in your messages you should receive the log in info no problem.

I hope that this helps you, and fingers crossed I will be seeing you soon (thinking maybe you meet me in Tokyo and help me spend $1000, its been too damn long!)

either way, good podcast as always. I may not be the best producer for this but I still believe I am the right person to choose. Now I must get back to my own business and start trying to pay for trips to San Fran and Tokyo myself.

Dear Tim & esteemed panel of magic elves,

– I promoted the podcast on mine and my company’s Twitter accounts, multiple times. 4,436 followers total (all 100% organic and real, and a perfect target demographic for listeners to your podcast).

– I shared the link on Google+ to my 14,300 followers there.

– I promoted the podcast on the 3 Facebook pages I manage plus my personal page for a total reach of 2,194 people, plus I referenced this blog post and encouraged others to take part in the contest and promote it as well.

– I wrote a blog about it and posted it to my company’s website which gets 500 organic hits a day and I shared the podcast via our email newsletter which has 1,400 subscribers.

– I instagrammed a photo about the blog/podcast to my 918 followers on Instagram.

– I shared the podcast/post with my network on LinkedIn. My network has 7 million people.

– I encouraged sharing of the post and sent emails & texts to friends, family & clients (100 people)

All in all, the reach from my efforts is approximately 25,000… but I know you care more about quality than quantity, and I can tell you the exposure was of exceptional quality. All 100% organic, genuine followers of my company (one of the best online editing services in the world) and my personal brand (I’m an LA-based entrepreneur, director & photographer).

Here’s how I reached the most SUPER TARGETED, QUALIFIED people who WILL CLICK THROUGH-a guaranteed over 213,000.

Who cares if I send to one billion people, if no one clicks. It’s not the numbers, since everyone could ignore the post. It’s who pays attention to the posts and CLICKS.

The people most interested and who will click are Arnold’s fans.

I hired a VA to work for several hours writing all of Arnold’s fan sites, since those are the people who would much more likely listen to the podcast. I personally contacted Arnold’s #1 site.

Arnold’s #1 fan site posted on Twitter, Facebook and their main news page for me. Huge win. Yes, we got it up 🙂 13.5 k on Twitter and 200k on FB 🙂 That’s like gold, since THIS IS A LIST MADE JUST FOR ARNOLD FANS! It’s taken years to get this list, and the links went to the PERFECT market. Actually, YOU COULDN’T GET A BETTER LIST than this one for this show. These are the people who will click through! Will be highest percentage of clicks.

(The #1 fan club asked for an exclusive photo of Tim and Arnold, so I asked Tim’s media person for one, but she didn’t send one. I did send the one posted, but Tim could you send them one, so they’ll promote it again? Send to: randytafs@yahoo.com.)

People interested in celebrities could also be more interested than most people. I also contacted:

The National Enquirer tip section. LOL Spoke with the Enquirer and they may be interested.

Star Magazine tip section

E Online.com tip section

I also contacted Arnold’s Blueprint.com site. Again, all Arnold fans who would be interested.

My list terminated all the other competition in this contest, since I targeted hundreds of thousands who have signed up saying they’re interested in hearing about Arnold.

Loved this episode. My biggest takeaway is how essential it is to have a crystal clear focus and vision.

To help get the word out, I submitted my first ever buzzfeed article to the buzzfeed community as a listicle of the interesting topics you covered with Arnold. The article contained links back to either your blog, your facebook posts, arnold’s facebook posts, or articles covering your podcast such as on business insider. Fingers crossed it gets picked up by the buzzfeed monkeys. I’m also sharing it on my social media accounts to get some momentum.

Why buzzfeed?

I recognize it’s going to the “dark side” of the internets, but my approach was to look at the Alexa top 100 sites and pick one that you (Tim) didn’t have a lot exposure on but Arnold does. Figured hitting a new audience would be more likely with this approach.

-How I pulled in views:

I like to keep it simple and organic, as I simply don’t know (nor want to know) enough about dark posts, hashtags and other “ninja tactics.” Low info diet, remember? 😉

-Instead, I sent out an email to my thousands of fitness customers and subscribers on my platform and highlighted benefits I took away from Arnold’s interview.

Considering much of the interview had to do with mindset and fitness, it really resonated with my subscriber-base.

This is one of many content peices of the 4hourblog that I have recommended to my community.

Thanks for everything, Tim

Jason

Let me start by saying I am a huge fan of your books as well as your new show and it would be an honor to share a meal with you. I do not have an extreme amount of followers however I did use some tools that I believe will exponentially grow your following.

In order to get the word out I started by writing a Facebook post asking my 1,500 friends to go to fourhourworkweek.com/Arnold and check out the podcast as well as to start following the hash tag #arnoldpod. I said it was really important to me, so a lot of people will.

I then went to Twitter, where I Tweeted the same sentiment, twice.

I next went to Instagram, where my cat kindly held a sign that said ” #Arnoldpod fourhourworkweek .com/ Arnold” and wrote the same thing in the caption along with the ever popular #catsofinstagram and the cleverly thought of, #podcats. I’m confident that this brought out a new demographic of viewers that would not have usually looked otherwise. (You can view the post at http://instagram.com/p/yxuV0TAh1e/ )

I then shouted “CHECK OUT FOUR HOUR WORK WEEK DOT COM SLASH ARNOLD” out of the window of my second story Boston apartment where there were a confirmed 7 people on the road, two of which pulled out their phones to, I can only assume, take a note of the website.

I will also be writing #arnoldpod on my hand before I go to work tonight so every time I hand a customer a beer he will presumably inquire / tell his friends about the podcast.

I also emailed my mom.

Please pick me.

Hey Tim,

Running marketing for a soon-to-launch edtech start-up down in Orange County, I wanted to personally experiment with some of Twitters new advertising features/platform that they’ve been busy improving upon, and see what kind of results I could get promoting content like this podcast.

( congrats to twitter shareholders btw +16% today! )

PS. I also had a free $100 twitter advertising coupon 😉

I launched a campaign targeting male’s in metro areas of SF, LA, and NYC for this experiment with similar interests based on Twitter’s data of both Arnold’s and your followers.

As for the promoted tweets, I created various ad types, each based on separate interesting pieces of the episode (ex. “How Arnold Used Meditation For One Year to Reset His Brain” and “How @Schwarzenegger Made Millions BEFORE His Acting Career Took Off”) with Twitter Cards, Images, and varying combinations. I will follow up with the analytics at the end of the campaign.

I noticed the Business Insider article, (http://www.businessinsider.com/arnold-schwarzenegger-transcendental-meditation-2015-2), so I thought about going the PR route, then realized if I had the time, with the next campaign I would love to use Facebook to target journalists/employees of a publications list I would put together with a PR pitch to get their attention. A custom directed promoted ad in their feed pitching a story haha anyways next time!

Glad I finally had an excuse to run some test campaigns, hopefully the episode gains some free exposure and maybe see you soon for dinner!

Update to my $100 Twitter Campaign:

19,974 Impressions and 1,480 Engagements (Clicks, Favorites, Retweets etc.)!

7.41% Eng. Rate

$.07 Cost per Engagement!

Had fun, and was impressed with Twitter’s advertising results/costs. Prices will obviously continue to rise as the platform continue’s to mature and competition for bids drives up prices, but seems like a great tactic for the right campaigns!

Looking forward to picking your brain over dinner Tim! 😉

Alright let’s take a shot at this, before I share my results, here’s how I approached this task in order for Tim to make this a profitable endeavour:

How much does the Tim Ferriss Show make from Sponsorships?

Without knowing this we can’t really know how much we should spend to make this worthwhile.

Looking at one of the top podcasters, John Lee Dumas, who does

7x shows per week with 2x sponsorships per episode

=> 7x2x4 = 56 sponsorships per month

According to his last income report he makes around 60’592 USD per month from sponsorships. That equals around 1000 USD per episode. Per two sponsors.

Tim is doing two sponsorships per episode with an average of 2-3 episodes per week.

That means, he’s doing 2 episodes * 2 sponsorships = 4 sponsorships per week

=> 4 * 4 = 16 sponsorships per month.

16 sponsors * 500 per sponsor = 8000 USD / month from the podcast

Tim is probably doing more downloads and the sponsorship money increases with the number of downloads. So let’s safely assume, it’s around 10k USD / month to spend to reach our goals.

That means we have 10’000 USD per month to make this a worthwhile endeavour.

What could be the goal of the podcast?

More outreach, more people, in a quantifiable way.

How would I do it/did I do it?

1. Create multiple sets of facebook ads

2. A/B test the hell out of them on a CPC basis

3. Switch to a CPM basis and keep getting clicks for less money

Where would I send the clicks to?

Tim is already #9 in the Top 10 of the iTunes charts:

comment image?dl=0

However, he’s only #53 on Stitcher. But since I couldn’t find any data on how many downloads are needed to get to a number one spot on the Stitcher charts, it’s not really quantifiable (to compare, Serial, #2 on iTunes, makes 3.4 Mio. downloads per episodecomment image?dl=0, taken from edition.cnn.com)

That’d leave us with Soundcloud and YouTube (considering that the blog already gets enough traffic from the newsletter and all the other articles)

Now Soundcloud doesn’t make a lot of sense, since it’s difficult to monetize further (besides the sponsorships). Plus, he’s only doing around 2-3k listens per episode, which is not enough to make it worthwhile in any additional way (maybe down the road?)

So, what about YouTube?

Tim currently has around 37k subscribers, with an average viewer count of around 5k-30k views per video. Compare this to “The Joe Rogan Experience” (#10 on Stitchercomment image?dl=0

and #30 on iTunes comment image?dl=0

), who has 273k subscribers, with an average viewer count of around 50k-100k views per video.

That’d mean that there is still a lot of potential on YouTube, especially considering that Tim is often times getting featured by iTunes for his episodes, like this one: comment image?dl=0

Results

Of course I realized this after linking my facebook ads to the blogpost (“hinterher ist man immer schlauer!”), but I mean even in the rules it states to link to the post, stream or iTunes link, so I linked to the post.

My ads for the first round of testing

Facebook Ad #1:

comment image?dl=0

Facebook Ad #2:

comment image?dl=0

Facebook Ad #3:

comment image?dl=0

Facebook Ad #4:

comment image?dl=0

Facebook Ad #5:

comment image?dl=0

Performance:

comment image?dl=0

(keep in mind that these ads just ran for a few hours)

So #5 performed the best, after switching to a CPM model (again way too short to optimize further), we’ve gotten to this:

comment image?dl=0

For a total of 113 clicks (with the other ads) in this short period of time.

That means we’re spending 0.62 USD per click.

With a budget of 10’000 USD, that’d mean: 16’129 Clicks / month

With these amounts we could get an average of around 14k views (probably more) to every interview for the podcast put on YouTube.

Hypothesis:

– we could get the CPC probably down to around 0.50 USD (if not more), while increasing the CTR with more time (and more testing!)

– The more videos with a lot of views Tim has on YouTube, the more exposure he gets, the more subscribers he gets, the more views he gets per video

– This would increase the chance to turn the YouTube account into an additional asset, if the interest lays in the monetary value OR way more exposure through a platform, where he’s not very known yet 🙂

Additional steps taken:

First off, I didn’t see this contest until about 6pm PST last night (5th) but had merrily listened to the podcast earlier this week. While I’m sure 24 hours may not be enough time to surpass some of the other entries, it was worth a quick effort since there’s a whale of a prize (dinner with Tim, of course).

Minimum Quantifiable Effort (MQE):

1. Created trackable bit.ly link through redirects: http://bit.ly/ttfs-jmk so I could track my progress.

2. Moved up the monthly newsletter release for one of my muses (e-commerce) by a few days; emailed to 11.1k subscribers with 26.6% list average open rate over last 12 months. Added in a brief contest for free product with the proper link to share. Audience is survival / tactical / law enforcement — my guess is little overlap to Tim’s typical audience.

3. Posted to that same muse’s Facebook page (27.4k) with awesome picture of Arnold.

4. Posted to personal Facebook and LinkedIn for shits and giggles.

5. Celebratory drink alcohol, obviously.

Quantifiable performance: https://bitly.com/1zEEYZb+

As of right now, there are 124 clicks on my link (unknown conversion to actually listening). This may seem low, but it’s quantifiable performance unlike aggregation of “potential” impressions.

Total time spent brainstorming, executing and writing this post: about 30 minutes + adult beverage enjoyment

The Four Hour Growth Hack

tl;dr:

– Launched a product on Product Hunt called ExplainedbyArnold, which helps startups get “Total Recall” on their product videos with voiceovers by Arnold. It was a hit. Check it out at http//:www.explainedbyarnold.com

– Created Slideshare content to drive traffic:

http://www.slideshare.net/visualcv/how-to-make-it-in-america-7-inspirational-quotes-by-arnold-schwarzenegger

– Asked top Slideshare users to add links to the Podcast on most popular Arnold presentations:

https://www.slideshare.net/fullscreen/damonnofar/6-secrets-to-success-by-arnold-schwarzenegger/

– Used Twitter influencer strategy to drive traffic

– Created an infographic about Arnold’s unconventional path to becoming a millionaire:

https://www.pinterest.com/pin/509117932851088713/

– Ran Google Adwords Campaign with $125 free advertising credit

– Wrote a Medium post about the experience as a meta growth hack: https://medium.com/@jamesclift/the-4-hour-growth-hack-62b835f47636

In less than 4 Hours.

Overall Results:

– ExplainedByArnold.com: 1,366 pageviews, 909 unique views, $120 revenue

– Adwords: 70,000 impressions, 100 clicks

– Medium post: 274 unique views

– Slideshare views: 302 legit unique views

– Slideshare hack: 9 click throughs

– Social media click throughs: 15

The click throughs were all tracked by Owl.ly. Many links (like the link from Explained by Arnold were the direct link to Fourhourworkweek.com/arnold, and are not trackable).

These stats are from 10am 2/5 and 3:30pm 2/6.

The full story:

After recently re-reading the 4-Hour Work Week, the failure of Stanford students came to mind after seeing Tim’s #arnoldpod challenge.

As a self-proclaimed Growth Hacker with a project that serves hundreds of thousands of users — I needed to win.

The catch? I needed to do it all in 4 hours. I couldn’t justify making this my full-time obsession for the week, and decided to 80/20 the process.

The following lays out the strategies, channels, and tools that I used to try to win the contest.

Step 1: I created a product

The number one key to a successful growth hack is having a product that doesn’t suck. I needed to come up with a product that was exciting, new, and captivating. In less than 4 Hours.

First I needed to come up with an idea. In 20 minutes.

Here were my top 2 ideas:

Explained by Arnold: A voiceover service that turned your boring startup explainer video into a powerful marketing tool — Voiced by Arnold.

Arnold Aggregator: A website that collected all social data about Arnold, from his own Twitter and Instagram posts to what his followers were saying.

I ran with Explained by Arnold. I had 1 hour to make a website that was good enough to launch.

I launched it: http://www.explainedbyarnold.com.

Step 2: Product Distribution

A friend posted Explained By Arnold to Product Hunt, and traffic spiked.

I also submitted to Reddit and Hackernews.

It was on the front page of ProductHunt for over 6 hours, and got over 900 unique views in less than a day.

Step 3: Content marketing

I decided to tackle three content channels.

Slideshare: The best place to share your presentations. It’s a gamble, but if you manage to get some momentum you could be featured on the front page. That means lots of views and traffic. It’s also good for long term link building.

I created a Presentation called: How to Make it in America: 7 Inspirational Quotes by Arnold Schwarzenegger in 20 minutes using Canva.

http://www.slideshare.net/visualcv/how-to-make-it-in-america-7-inspirational-quotes-by-arnold-schwarzenegger

Infographics: I decided to try my hand at creating an infographic, and took lessons from the podcast to create an infographic with Pictochart:

https://www.pinterest.com/pin/509117932851088713/

Step 4: Content Amplification

Once you have content, you need to drive traffic. Here are some good places to start:

Reddit: Find a niche subreddit related to your subject, and post it there. If you have friends on Reddit, get them to post so you don’t look like a self-promoting jerk. Reddit doesn’t like that.

Facebook: Though it’s harder to succeed now, Facebook is still a reasonably effective way to drive traffic if you have enough friends.

Twitter: Just tweeting out content with a hashtag is akin to shouting in a stadium full of drunk Australians, however Twitter can be incredibly powerful if used correctly. This is through the influencer strategy.

Twitter influencers: The key to twitter is to have influential people amplify your content. One tweet from a famous person can drive thousands of views due to the ripple effects of retweets. Use Followerwonk to find influential Twitter users, and tweet at them. Your goal? A retweet.

I used all of these to reasonable degrees of success. Twitter was the best, and I gained a lot of momentum from the influencer strategy.

Personal Slideshare emails: I found the top 10 presentations on Arnold on Slideshare, and sent a personal note to the creators asking for a “really weird favor”.

I wanted them to put the link to the Podcast at the end of their presentations — why try to get to the front page if these guys have already made it?

The biggest success was a link on this presentation that has over 20k views:

https://www.slideshare.net/fullscreen/damonnofar/6-secrets-to-success-by-arnold-schwarzenegger/

I avoided the low hanging fruit of paying for fake views from Fiverr for everything except for my Slideshare. I did not count the fake views in the overall statistics.

Step 6: Paid Advertising

With zero budget and 15 minutes, the best I could do was use $100 Google Adwords credit, choose a few keywords and let the budget run.

The results were 100 clicks and over 60k impressions.

Summing it up:

Overall, I really enjoyed experimenting with Growth Hacking in a limited time frame. I created, launched, and promoted a product in less than 4 Hours, driving over 1000 (verified) unique views and over 2000 pageviews.

I didn’t reach my traffic goals, but I did learn a lot:

-New content discovery and amplification tools.

-New content creation tools.

-A nifty Slideshare tactic I’m going to keep using

-How much energy you get by timeboxing something into 4 hours.

-Humility. And that reiteration of the fact that doing things right takes time.

-It’s always worth a shot, even if you end up failing.

Tim, that was my best effort to beat out those Stanford kids and win the challenge. Thanks for the opportunity!

What a great prize. Here’s what I did to promote the podcast:

– Made my twins watch the movie ‘Twins’ then took a photo of them and used it to shamelessly promote the podcast link on Twitter, Facebook & Instagram (insert evil laugh here…!)

– Changed the wallpaper on my phone to your podcast image and showed everyone I met this week how to find it on iTunes.

Facebook

– Ran a Facebook ad targeted at people who like the Facebook Pages of various entrepreneurs. Spent $47 & reached 2059 people, with 123 clicks

– Posted the link (and a blurb of why people should click) in several FB groups, including the B-School private group which has nearly 13,000 members

– Posted on my personal profile

– Took a photo of my roller derby league and posted on our Facebook Page that we’re big supporters of Tim & Arnold and told all our fans to click through & listen

Twitter

– A few tweets mentioning the podcast and how awesome it is

Instagram

– Changed the link in my bio so people could click straight through to iTunes

– Researched the best hashtags to use on my posts to gain maximum exposure of the link (& got my photo next to Tim’s by using #arniethegreat)

Google+

– Posted the link in several communities and on my profile

As a Graphic Designer, I like to explain thing visually. I mapped out my promotion plan into a mini infographic in this link. http://s19.postimg.org/loxogb29f/TFcompetition.jpg

Some noteworthy points are:

– I have studied other people strategy on this page and try to do something different because I don’t want to visit the same Facebook page the other have just went and bombard them with the same message.

– I tried to analyse what kind of audience will enjoy the talk and from that process

– I purposely skip some Social Media channel such as Intragram and not spend much time on Pinterest because users there tend to prefer short, visual contents. However I created an appealing quote graphic of Arnold (for example: http://postimg.org/image/yhlsg8dv3/) because that’s the style of contents this market love to consume.

– By nature, I am a very low profile person especially on Social Media so the exercise force me to think how can reach higher exposures using other people’s network. I resorted on getting a few ‘connector’ people to promote it via the their Facebook groups and Twitters.

– I also sent personal emails recommended the podcast to some of my friends who might be interest as well.

Total man power I have spent on the project is about 7 hours.

Thanks for giving an opportunity to participate in this competition. First it force me to really listen to someone whom originally I had no interest and his story and mindset is just purely fascinating! Then I get to test out my online marketing skill. I learned alot about technique and even some dark side of social media. Definitely having fun!

Wish I would have read this post at the beginning of the week like I should have. I started last night (Thursday) @ about 9:00pm PT.

I shared the Itunes link on my twitter and facebook accounts. I have a measly 67 followers on Twitter and 347 Facebook friends. I then set up a facebook page called “Best Bodybuilding Interviews” (https://www.facebook.com/BestBodyBuildingInterviews?ref=hl)

I posted a link to this blog post so that It was at the top of the page. I then ran a Facebook Ad Campaign. I used two different ads with different targets and links. I set the budget for each ad at $10 per day.

Here are links to the ads:

Ad 1: https://www.evernote.com/shard/s98/sh/fd473f2c-95d1-4a1c-8cbd-838f06bc3a46/5a6539955ced4d0a69493ba1a636e586

Ad 2: https://www.evernote.com/shard/s98/sh/ac4c291e-9be0-47a7-9fb0-3b373d4a3c85/588872c9aa635b0a58dd06d0c595dfe9

Ad 1 directed people to the direct streaming link because I thought that a link directly to itunes might be confusing after clicking on the ad.

The target audience was:

Location:

Austria

Australia

Germany

Spain

Barcelona (+25 mi) Catalonia

United Kingdom

England

Russia

United States

Interests: Arnold Classic, Bodybuilding.com, International Federation of BodyBuilding & Fitness, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Arnold sports festival, Mr. Olympia

Age: 18 – 55

Mobile Placement: News Feed

Desktop: News Feed

———————————————-

Ad 2 drove traffic to the Itunes store. For this I used the exact came criteria but I also included the following as interests :

Itunes

Podcasts

Itunes Store

———————————————–

Here are my results:

Personal Facebook: 1 like and 1 share (Both from my wife) LAME!

Twitter: 3 favorites

Facebook ads:

Ad 1 : 1 person listened to direct streaming link, 2 people engaged with the link, and 83 people saw it.

Ad 2 : 7 people clicked through to iTunes. 18 People engaged with the link, 645 people saw it.

I can quantify that at least 8 people clicked though to start listening to the podcast and 728 people saw the ad. Everything else is speculation.

I was really hoping for better engagement. I guess its still something and I’m glad I can contribute. I have extreme gratitude for all the time and effort you have been putting into this podcast. Its phenomenal and I will continue to promote it. Thanks Tim

Hey Tim,

I have a captive audience that cares about diversity in masculinity, and that’s where I promoted your podcast (via real conversations!). I shared it with a close circle of friends in Cambridge, Mass. who are influencers in a various ways: authors, entrepreneurs, policy makers, entrepreneurs, journalists and fathers. People who will listen to the entire thing and spread the word thoughtfully to your iTunes page. People literally downloaded it on the spot. I also posted on twitter and Facebook.

Arnold Schwarzenegger is in many ways the epitome of masculinity. I mean, he’s the effing Terminator turned Governator. However, your podcast showed a side of him that is relevant to how we think about moden masulinity and really contributes to the conversation.

On a totally different note, I know you love Sesame Street. I know this because I’ve only posted on your blog only once before, in 2007 (I’ve been reading your blog for that long!), and I won a box of chocolates because I used to work on Sesame Street and sent you a picture with me and Gover! My boyfriend at the time was super jealous.

But yeah, in terms of promoting your podcast: real conversations with people I knew would really take interest. Huzzah!

#arnoldpod (breakdown below!)

I promoted the hell out of the awesome #arnoldpod through my followings on Facebook (5,200 people) Twitter (about 900 people) and LinkedIn (network of 6.3 million), as well as those of the TV station I work for (160,000 people), the professional pages of several friends who also work in TV news across the country (several thousand), sorority sisters all over (several hundred), and wonderful friends and family members who simply want to help me meet Tim. I then paid a small amount of money to boost the post to facebook users who like Tim, his books, and things like startups, entrepreneurship and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

According to facebook metrics, the links actually reached 34,000 people on that site alone.

Many of these friends had no idea who Tim Ferriss is… So I explained that I am inspired and encouraged by his writing, and am in awe of the arsenal of stories he has to tell!

I read one of Tim’s books a year ago, and it was the catalyst in a chain reaction of inspiration that created a massive shift in the way my mind works. I’m forever grateful for that… So to have a conversation with him would be an invaluable cherry on top. Thanks for the chance!

This was a fun challenge considering I dont use social media (and yet I still came across the book The Four Hour Work Week and this blog).

I considered a gorilla art approach to putting “truck nuts” inscribed with #arnoldpod on public sculptures, particularly figurative bronze statues to make people do double-takes. Making them whip out their iphone and create a sharing frenzy. Since how I just discovered this contest two hours ago and it’s raining like crazy, I decided to create my own viral image going along the same concept (and winning $1000 probably wouldn’t be enough for bail).

The image is of a Boy Scout sash with a Balls Badge proudly displayed with the text, “The ideal balance of softness and strength.” I shared it on Facebook, twitter and instagram.

Historically “taking the bull by the balls” was meant as a symbol for American strength and power. Perhaps the Balls Badge can have it’s own movement, encouraging people to do the right thing, regardless if it’s going to be well received.

well nothing ground breaking so far in my personal circle.

From what I can measure (so not using my shotgun or exponential approach), at the moment, I have about 1900 retweets, about 300 likes on FB and about 200 people that clicked on the fb link. from my linkedin contacts about 10% checked out the link.

I have an idea for another time that should generate about 400 interested unique persons per day.

Next time I will make sure that I have a unique trackable link.

First time in using all this social media to advertise, so I have learned a bit for sure :-).

Game on folks …

I built a skyscraper, gained lean muscle mass, designing a better lifestyle, and auditioned new employees! This is how i spent my time generating traffic flow to the Arnold podcast interview.

I was very intrigued by the way Tim decided to use his followers to help him out on this one. I also know that my goal here is more important to me than Tim’s, but I like to keep my coach-ability index rather high – i’m willing to give up a few things in consideration of the future. Although i had to sacrifice a little, I was able to keep the sacrifices to a minimum.

I am an entrepreneur who’s main source of income is building high-rises(for the time being that is). I spend my days usually working 100′ above my death if not for the safety harness there to save my life. It would be nice to stay at home all day and promote Tim’s interview, but I have a job to do and work to be done.

I am on a ‘Geek to Freak’ sprint! Having gained 10lbs in two weeks i really had no time around all my food eating to promote Tim’s blog. For someone who used to be a long-distance runner there is a LOT of food to be eaten just to gain any mass!

Now i must promote this podcast in some way shape or form. I really dont like doing anything unless it is for a useful reason and both parties can benefit it. Along with this little competition set up here, there is a much larger and broad spread competition of Tim’s/shopify’s that I am currently signed up for. I am in the process of creating a muse to better my lifestyle and no longer need to look down to that 100′ fall amongst lumber and cement finishers. Spending time on this competition to set up my website and advertisement to test my muse left me with not too much more time to spend.

Keeping with benefiting both parties i decided to use my time spent on promoting Tim’s podcast to my advantage. To test my muse i need to set up an google adword account and set up an ad. Well following the advice found in 4HWW that’s exactly what I did. I gave myself a trial run with google adwords and my first campaign was promoting Tim’s podcast. Now i’m an adwords expert and can setup my own campaign to test out my muse.

To run a ‘muse’ i need help. That’s the whole idea of lifestyle design and having more time and money to design that lifestyle. Well my new wonderful employees in India and the Philippines are now here to help. I am no expert in online marketing and promoting via social media. The beautiful part is i can pay someone FAR more experienced than me $5.00/h to do it for me. So I went looking for a little help to promote Tim’s podcast, yet this was also an audition/working interview for my own benefit. I was able to simultaneously promote the interview while weeding out a few terrible candidates and finding a few very hard working individuals who are very knowledgable in their trade.

There you have it. I must leave now! Im late for my second and final workout of the week and have more dreams to design! Best of luck to the rest of the candidates and I look forward to that dinner Tim! Don’t expect a kiss after though because my girlfriend already said that wasn’t allowed!

Cheers,

Mike Abrantes

To promote this podcast interview I did:

Personally I think it’s between me and a few others on here—but I’ll let the results speak for themselves.

Left a positive review (to help you reach 2k reviews)

Promoted the interview on Twitter several times (over 10k fans, and it got retweeted 3x so over 10k fans)

Sent email to my friends and family (got you some new listeners, ones that are not super active online but do enjoy podcasts—these are valuable listeners since they are very selective and hard to get)

Asked others via email to promote show and told them about the prize involved (at this moment that is unquantifiable, but I know at least 3 friends friends promoted on twitter, facebook, and their own emails, as well as left their own reviews on your podcast)

Shared on pinterest/instragram (200 followers + on each, I not that active, but these followers are my friends)

Posted on Linkedin (over 1,000 connections- I’m a superconnecter)

Donated funds to the ‘Blow Sh*t Up w/Arnold” campaign and let some of my friends who are fans know about it as well (via personal messages)

Posted on my blog (avg. 100 visits a day— small but many visits are from niche followers—ones who read my review on the 4HB and I won that contest)

Posted the bonus of Arnold in his private jet to my FB page

share on FB the business insider link which also includes your link

Shared on FB bodybuilding post (bodybuilding motivation 719k fans)

shared on fb bodybuilders against tipping (14k fans)

shared on Abraham vortex group (34k closed group, invite only group)

Posted url in several Quora questions (what is the future of bodybuilding, what made Arnold such a popular actor, and a few others)

Posted on bodybuilding.com forum

And here’s my critique on posting to FB groups that are not closed, “posted on FB group that has x amount of members”—when anyone posts on that wall people don’t notifications. Only admin posts give out notifications to other members. My posts in groups are predominately closed groups where people actually follow my posts.

We wanted to do this with integrity, no tricks, no scams, no misleading; honest marketing to interested people. So we put our own money on the line and created very targeted and relevant Facebook ads. As of Friday 5:45 PM PST we were personally responsible for driving 6,380 unique, verifiable, and relevant clicks to your iTunes podcast page (which was your preferred destination), all in less than 48 hours. Again, these were not simply “fake, purchased clicks” but instead real clicks from people who were very likely to listen to your podcast.

All data was tracked using the link http://bit.ly/1zB4636+. Also, click here for more backup.

Through Facebook Advertising we generated 5,634 unique clicks to your iTunes page by personally creating 199 ads to audiences of varying interests including (but not limited to) fans of Arnold and people who have expressed interest in bodybuilding, meditation, and entrepreneurship (all themes from your podcast).

These ads served 379,955 impressions with an average CTR of 2.25%! The best performing ad was served to men aged 48-49 who expressed interest in bodybuilding. That particular ad had an awesome CTR of 5.341% and an average cost per click to website of just $0.13. This was the “winning” ad we created:

As impressive as we believe the Facebook advertising campaign was we wanted to make sure we would win, so we called in a favor…

We asked Kris Jenner, mother of Kim Kardashian and matriarch of arguably the most recognizable name and family in the world, as well as a friend of ours, to do us a favor and post a tweet on your behalf, generating 501 unique clicks. The tweet went out to her 5 million followers and was “retweeted” 42 times and “favorited” 177 times. You can find the permanent link here: https://twitter.com/KrisJenner/status/563550342424453121. And here is a screenshot:

https://twitter.com/KrisJenner/status/563550342424453121

Regardless of the outcome we truly appreciate everything you have done for us, paving the way for businesses like ours to exist. Thanks for everything!!!

Just finished this now. Totally excellent.

Arnie was a trip. I had heard he had made his money in construction but didn’t know how he parlayed the money from mail order training and seminars into investments.

I also liked his part on never auditioning.

I figured with all the support, anyone who has an interest in Tim Ferriss or Arnold Schwarzenegger has probably heard about the interview, especially if they can be reached by Twitter, Linkin, FB, Instagram, blog or podcast, (seeing as Tim Ferriss is perched right on top of all of iTunes!!!)

Short of promoting the interview in a speech, billboard to taking out TV ads, what to do to attract NEW listeners?

The question became, how can we reach someone who normally wouldn’t be following body building, action movies, politics, 4-hour series. etc

My thought was to create some graphics with slightly controversial or head-turning headlines: the idea is to pattern interrupt someone who is just going through their Twitter Feed or Instagram feed.

Pictures say 1000 words yada yada….but the headline/text also provokes emotion for better or worse.

I then posted to self improvement FB streams, posted to pages of people with huge following, posted the graphics in question format to the FB podcasting groups I am a part of, Instagram etc.

Obviously I did not make a landing page so I’m not exactly sure how you will track who’s sharing translated into clicks or downloads. Therefore I’m not sure how to quantify results..

BUT SHOCK AND HORROR!!! There are people who haven’t heard of you!!!!!!!!! Amazing! I can’t even!

This is one such reply I received:

I cut out the name obviously for privacy.

Good Lord! There are people who don’t know Tim Ferriss. HOW?

Anyway… All in all… It was a great lesson in applied podcast promotion.

Tim, you are a master. Getting everyone to promote your podcast is genius.

Here are my graphics. EVERYONE is welcome to use them freely if they want to give their posts a last boost. There’s no tracking or URLs to worry about. I made them in Canva for free. It’s just….a picture grips the eye more than text, so it’s faster to captivate an audience in FB etc.

This was a blast, and actually really cool community involvement!! I learned a lot and had good conversations about your show!!

Respectfully,

Mercy Kay.

I made comments like this one in reply to posts on various pages: for Example Ted Talks Does not allow you to post directly to the page…

Sly as a fox, yes?

Hello Tim.

First things first: promoted your iTunes page on my personal Facebook page with direct tags (and therefore posts) to 12 of my most influential, podcast, fitness, business minded freinds, as well as all three of my fitness/business/travel pages.

Second thing second: promoted this blogpost on most major cities on Craigslist on the Free Stuff page.

Third thing third: work of mouth about how epic this is.

Fourth thing: putting together a mini ebook of advice/stories I can email you for people to download along with the podcast.

Cheers and good luck reaching your goal!

Tim,

When I first received this challenge at the beginning of the week, I knew I had it figured out. I leaned back in my chair and with a smug grin envisioned taking off from JFK with a mimosa in my hand and 3 beautiful flight attendants taking turns giving me a shoulder rub. I immediately began copy and pasting the link along with a clever phrase into all the most popular youtube videos. I filtered the the results by filtering different combinations with the highest view count, for the day, for the week, for the month, and for the year, along with the most popular topics such as superbowl, political, kardashian, etc, and used the “most popular on youtube” channel to fill the rest … I put my nose to the grindstone and made a playlist of 100 videos, copy and pasting into every one of them. 4 hours later I examined my progress and found I had a sore clicking finger and a headache.

I soon thereafter realized that my manual efforts were not going to win me this task. I realized that my strategy would have to revolve around the use of mass media over the internet, though I only had one challenge, I have no tech savvy. So I got to work making a few youtube videos. I began hiring a team of half a dozen SEO and social media specialists from India and the U.S. to make up for my lack of tech knowledge, I hired a few to focus on general SEO, and some to focus on creating multiple accounts and using them to post the link to the interview and to my videos to over 1500 of the most popular social media accounts. Assuming some might not produce results, I continued to hire assistants for the task.

Last night, driving home from a business appointment in Maryland, I arrived at Staples 8 minutes before closing time and proceeded to tornado my way down the aisles gathering everything needed to make sandwich boards and fliers. I got way more than I needed, in case I succeeded in hiring or winning over some assistants for the next mission. Today I took the train into NYC with sandwich board advertisement and a stack of fliers to promote the link the size of my fist I went to times square and found the busiest corner I could and posted up barking to people “Become world class in anything in 6 months or less!!” “10X your work output and decrease your hours!! Free resource”, etc, etc, testing different calls with different people. I was able to get many just by breaking peoples pattern and saying “You need this” and handing the flier over to them. I then decided to test a different approach and used my iPhone to find the Starbuck’s surrounding the immediate area. I then began going to each one, asking to speak with the manager, and 9/10 who liked my pamplet, took a stack (one took over 80) to distribute them among the employees. I did this with 10 other restaurants in the area and got great responses as well as some interesting looks… By this time the day was coming to an end and it was time for me to wrap it up, I headed to my friend’s apartment with a just a few fliers left. The flier was devised using the book jacket from your 3 books and listing elements from each under subcategories “HEALTHY, WEALTHY, WISE”

As of now, I’ve shared this link with my facebook friends about 800, and my friends facebook friends, about 1500 different people, and her google plus.

The youtube videos I created had almost 100,000 views in total last time I checked.

To win this task: I planned much, slept little, applied 80/20 and parkinsons law to my advantage, tested and experimented, played hooky from work twice, jumped over a fence into a 3 foot snow drift, twice, with a sprained ankle, to save a few moments in getting my task at Fedex Office completed minutes before closing. I waited in line for over an hour at CVS trying to pay moneygram to my assistants at midnight with a lady with really long nails. All in all, I may not have won the task, but I can guarantee that no one else put in the effort in that I did. And if the purpose of the task was to generate the most traffic to your site, my strategy will continue to do that over time. I had a great time and learned a lot about my capabilities in this task. Thank you Tim.

AKA: Operation Dinner with Tim

AKA: $72.40 and 1540 verifiable and quantifiable visits to your podcast

But before the numbers:

This was one of your best shows Tim! I got my start lifting weights at the age of 12 in my basement reading Arnold’s workouts in FLEX magazine. And I now I live an EPIC life with more freedom doing what i love in great part due to reading the 4WW 7 years ago. Great to hear the two of you together. Side note, I just started meditation twice a day last Saturday, and it was great to hear how Arnold used it for a year. Gave me a nice framework to work with.

Now on to the stats. Screenshots and methods are listed in more detail here: http://billhargenrader.com/2015/01/operation-dinner-tim-ferriss/

So to start off with you wanted the “ideal” link to the itunes download, and “quantifiable” data. So, after listening to the show (so I knew that I stood behind the promotion) I took your itunes link and dropped it into my improvely link tracker (we based software for tracking links, clicks, conversions etc) This would ensure I could track the hits, in addition to having built in fraud click protection to make sure the hits were individuals and not bots.

With that link, I went for 3 targets, Personal, Quality paid traffic, and quantity paid traffic.

Personal: Posted on my personal page, emailed to friends, posted in numerous Arnold fan pages on facebook.

I posted on my twitter profile here: https://twitter.com/billhargenrader

And my FB page here: https://www.facebook.com/bill.hargenrader

Quality: FB Ads. Zeroed in on Arnold fans, and found a sweet spot of 11 cents per website visit.

Total spend $61.90 for 506 website visits.

Quantity: I found the most reputable facebook traffic gig on twitter and after $10.50 spent, there were 1035 hits. Once again these website clicks were verified using built in click fraud.

So there you have it! No guesses here, or high ball estimates. 1540 verifiable and quantifiable visits to your podcast page to download it.

Why would I spend $70 on this?

1. Crazy experiment you have going on here with getting all of your fans to go bonkers promoting your show, and I wanted to be a part of it.

2. The show was really that good.

3. I’ve given your book away more than any other book to my friends and family to help change their lives, since you’ve impacted my life in such a great way, and $70 bucks is a nice way to give back a lil.

And 4… sometime you gotta spend a lil money to get to go to dinner with Tim 😉

To promote the Arnold Schwarzenegger episode of The Tim Ferriss Show, I first shared the podcast link on my social media pages of Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. My social media circle ranges from the “spiritual” and mindful artists, photographers, and actors to go-getting weightlifters, entrepreneurs, and self-starters. Regardless of profession and hobbies, I try to keep people consciously focused on learning and self-improvement around, which is clearly the type of people to be interested in your podcasts and what you and your guests have to say.

My next step was to put up a screenshot of your podcast link and topics for my 600+ Tinder matches (the percentage of bots in my matches I can only guess at). I can’t claim that was much of a boon to your page-click total here but one never knows.

Next, I got a t-shirt screen-printed with the podcast title above the photo of Arnold and yourself above a link to the podcast. That was finished yesterday and I’ve been wearing it since whether from school, to work, out to stores, to the dentist, or to my local sensory deprivation tank spa.

After I had the shirt printed, I went around my city (New Haven) putting up fliers I had printed around downtown and the Yale campus. I put up some fliers on billboards, walls, at my school, on windows of popular stores (including the main stops for the countless Yale and city tourists that visit every day), and inside the 2nd largest gym in the world (by cubic feet), the 14-story Payne Whitney Gymnasium. My last stop was to the Apple store, to set this website as the homepage for the MacBook Safari browsers.

Here is a photo album of most of my efforts:

Dear Tim & esteemed panel of magic elves,

– I promoted the podcast on mine and my company’s Twitter accounts, multiple times. 4,436 followers total (all 100% organic and real, and a perfect target demographic for listeners to your podcast).

– I promoted the podcast on the 3 Facebook pages I manage plus my personal page for a total reach of 2,194 people, plus referenced this blog post and encouraged others to take part in the contest and promote it as well.

– I shared it on Google+ to the 14,300 people following me.

– I encouraged sharing of the post and sent emails & texts to friends, family & clients (100 people)

All in all, the reach from my efforts is approximately 25,000… but I know you care more about quality than quantity, and I can tell you the exposure was of exceptional quality. All 100% organic, genuine followers of my company, Edit911 (one of the best online editing services in the world) and my personal brand (I’m an LA-based entrepreneur, director & photographer).

PS. Save your miles, I’m in San Francisco all the time for work & pleasure. It’d be a bucket list goal completed to buy you dinner.

Saw many go the route of posting the link to large communities or reddit feeds. This could definitely be impactful, but I wanted to try a different approach.

Something more targeted and real-time, interacting with the people most likely to click through, listen to and most importantly enjoy the Arnold Schwarzenegger podcast.

Stuck with twitter and Instagram for the ability to sort my targeted audience by hashtag or mention as well as to interact in real time. I love when I have a blue or orange notification bubble pop up and I’m sure others do too.

For this reason I set up two new accounts specific to the Tim Ferriss – Arnold Schwarzenegger podcast.

Instagram: @Arnold_Podcast (https://twitter.com/Arnold_Podcast)

Twitter: @Arnold_Podcast (http://instagram.com/arnold_podcast)

I used hashtags to filter my audience on both platforms. Started with the givens like #Arnold, #ArnoldSchwarzenegger and #Bodybuilding, and worked my way into 30-40 other hashtags like #goldsgym, #fitness, #motivation, #lifting, #crossfit, #arnoldclassic… and so on. You have no idea just how many people interested in body building post selfies of themselves during their workout. 15,925,474 posts just for #bodybuilding – INSANE!.

But this was great news – this meant I had a constant stream of real people on both platforms pushing text and photo of themselves working out onto the internet. On average I found that #bodybuilding was used every 10-30 seconds on the high side. Very nice.

Strategy was to build some initial content and framework on the accounts to grab these bodybuilders’ attention and swing them to the fourhourworkweek.com/arnold interview page. For content I used the best Arnold photos I could find (which is not difficult because the dude is a beast) and drafted some direct quotes from the podcast to serve as coordinating text. This made for a cool Image + Quote deliverable on Instagram. Twitter served up quotes only (used bufferapp.com to push these out), but I made sure to include the fourhourworkweek short link in each post and profile header. I also made sure to make the account names Arnold Schwarzenegger so anytime the account followed the user would get notified that Arnold Schwarzenegger was following them.

To drive traffic to the page I simply followed. Following numbers were the following at the time of this post:

Instagram: 750

Twitter: 2001

I used an application I found called blastfollow (brianmcarey.com/blastfollow/) to create follows by hashtag for Twitter using the hashtag criteria above. I think I hit the limit at 2,001 after some followup research when my numbers stopped ticking. (wasn’t sure if bringing bots or apps like into the equation would be frowned up, but I don’t like rules)

Couldn’t find a tool quickly to do the same for Instagram so I got to enjoy some time looking at pictures of women taking selfies in skimpy gym attire. Not a bad hour and a half.

Overall results at the time of this post were as follows:

Twitter: 145 followers with multiple favorites and retweets

Instagram: 65 followers

Posts

Twitter: 24

Instagram: 10

Effectivity (followed/followers):

Twitter: 7%

Instagram: 8.6%

I’m not a online marketing guru nor do I have any idea what the hell I am doing, but from what I know for online advertising and response rates those percentage (albeit on a small base) are pretty solid.

Overall the Instagram campaign was most effective, and it seems to continue to have success as notifications are still rolling in.

Unknowns I would love to know, but may never know:

-Out of the 2,751 notifications I created, how many actually made it all the way through to the interview?

-Out of the 210+ followers, how many actually made it all the way through to the interview?

Again, not totally certain… But what I do know is that the exercise (no pun intended) seemed more human than I thought it would, especially on Instagram. I felt like as I was going along I was validating the audience I was trying to connect to through their photos and giving them something they would find interesting and inspiring: great pics of Arnold, excellent quotes, and the ability to listen to a current podcast they may never have known existed.

Cheers

-Kevin

Definitely one of my favorite podcast of all time. I grew up idolizing this man. He undeniably hustled, had clear vision, followed his path, and just genuinely happy in life.

I could relate with him in so many levels. My family moved to the states living off on food stamps for many years but I never allowed that to define me. My Unwavering pursuit to achieve my goals got me to where I am now. I had a clear vision and I executed.

Thanks again for this, Tim. I’ve been sharing this to as many people as I could.

I’ve shared it on Twitter and Facebook.

Cheers

-Kevin

Hey Tim,

I wrote Seth Godin imploring him to share this post. I do not know if he will. You could ask him about it. Anyway in the event I win, I am open to new foods or going with classics. San Francisco is essentially a food Mecca. Look forward to hearing from you. If we don’t meet this time, maybe next.

Very best,

Stephen

It’s unfortunate that he didn’t continue practicing TM. Research shows that TM continues to cause positive changes in the brain even if you have been practicing for 50 years.

Tim, this was one of the best podcast interviews I have ever heard. I never workout while listening to podcasts (I need my ‘Til I Collapse to motivate me to squat my bodyweight) but I couldn’t stop listening to you and Arnold. I never took too much time to learn about his journey but after listening to this, I have gained a lot of respect for the Governator.

Thanks for the good listen!

Hi Tim

I really don’t know what to make of that interview…

Upfront:

The following is not supposed to be critique, because who am I to know what it feels like to interview Herr Schwarzenegger and to know what pressure/anxiety one feels at that moment. So I am only stating my opinion here.

This being said:

I wonder what Herr Schwarzenegger’s motive was to accept this interview. I mean, without a doubt he gets dozens of interview requests daily (but probably most of them get blocked by his personal assistant/s). He didn’t even talk too much about these aspects he says he’s passionate about, and the interview was, IMO, more ‘Arnold nostalgia’. And even if he would have talked mainly about after school programs etc, I believe he has no shortage of opportunities to talk regularly in front of people with big wallets that can support his fund raisers big time.

I had quite some expectations for this interview, but can’t say those were met. I didn’t really need to know how in his Austrian village they called their toilets, or how much German/English ‘Mischmasch’ he talks with his peers.

What I was missing are the answers to the following questions:

– Being Arnold Schwarzenegger in the autumn of his life, what means happiness now for you? What does not mean happiness anymore?

– The classic: What would you do differently now in your life if you could do it again? Why?

– If you had the chance, would you run for President of the USA, and if so: Why?

– What’s the single biggest advantage of being a celebrity? What’s the single biggest disadvantage that could stop you from trying to become a celebrity again if you had to do it all over again?

– How did you deal with your fears and anxieties when, at least sometimes, you felt that your vision is bigger than what you can achieve (assuming that he had those thoughts every now and then)?

– What advise can you give or do you give those children that life below the poverty line and don’t have anyone to care for them? How can they create a vision and make it come true?

– How did you understand that your big vision was something you can actually tackle? Was there moment when it just made ‘click’?

Regarding Transcendental Meditation:

Is it just me, or does it feel like an eternity to meditate for “only” 1 year until you feel “calm” and “relaxed” and able to tackle your issues? I mean: Depending on how big your issues are, 1 year can drive you crazy! So, IMO, that’s not at all quick. Herr Schwarzenegger said that he had some first results after 14 days, but all in all it took him 1 year to not feel the need for TM anymore. And let’s not forget: His issues back then where so called ‘luxury problems’ (securing the money for his continued real estate success, movie roles,…). It’s not like he seems to have had a deep, inner crisis. I know people in my circle who have solved their issues (which seemed more pressing than those of Herr Schwarzenegger) in a matter of days 2-3 days (I can share more info on that in a different comment, although it doesn’t have anything to do with those ‘hip’ soul searching methods of these days, so probably it’s not of much interest).

All in all, Tim:

The interview seems a lost opportunity to me. But that’s probably because I had very high expectations. So, this comment is not intended to hurt anybody’s feelings or to criticise, but simply to state an opinion. I am looking forward to listening the Peter Thiel interview soon, about how to think like Elon Musk. I would hope that he will be on your podcast too sometime.

Regards from Greece

David

Oh Arnold? Why do parents work such long hours? So they can buy more trash they don’t need, to impress the people they hate, and to look like Schwarzenegger? Bigger cars, bigger houses. What for? No love. The only thing Schwarzenegger cares about is cash. The American dream. You have to be asleep to believe it. There are not enough natural resources to make everybody rich and in this day and age only those who are truly mentally ill can take more than they need for they do not care and do not want to know about the origins of their wealth or the origins of natural resources (South America, Middle East, Far East, Africa) and have never read the back of their toothpaste box let alone social psychology, international relationships, humanities, geopolitics. What a Victorian style piece of nonsense. You don’t work hard and make your wealth for you can’t acquire excessive amounts of wealth without enslaving, exploiting, manipulating and using others, like he himself had pointed out as if it were a joke and not a neurotic abusive sadistic obsession and in the process you deprive yourself of your humanity and become an abusive self centred asshole who can’t live with himself. Now let us all strive for it.

#arnoldpod – so I submitted my post yesterday at 6PM PST, but it’s not looking like it ever got posted. Had over 400+ clicks to the website in just under 24 hours. My targets were unique: I targetted the listeners of the top 10 podcasts. Not just Arnold and Tim fans…

Rules are rules, I understand. And shame on me for not checking if they got uploaded until this AM, but I don’t see them.

So, here is my report again: “How The Terminator’s Cow Balls Helped Me Help Tim Reach 48,032 Potential Fans In Less Than 24 Hours…”

I’d love to still be considered. You can see the time stamps in my ads in the report. But if not, I get it. Thanks again… Joel

Tim, probably I am one of the biggest fan of Arnold. He has been my only inspiration through all my hardships. He changed my vision, motivations and how I see the world. You are very lucky, you met and have a photo together. I would give many things just to say ‘thank you’ and shake hands with him.

Thanks Tim. Once again, just great questioning and I wanted to say thank you for what you bring us in the podcast Series. I’ve listened to every one so far, and was observing the other day just how much your work “curates” my learning. Seneca and Dan Carlin, Kurt Vonnegut all interesting additions to my life in the last year. Promised myself to leave a comment by way of thanks for each episode Hope you’re making a steady recovery from Lyme’s.

Tim: This Podcast was amazing. Between Arnold and the team from Barbell Shrugged/Business I obtained some wonderful nuggets. As I listened to them sitting on my butt in my office doing meaningless tasks my brained began churning and I think I may have discovered a possible MUSE! I’m going to pick my professor’s brain a little bit with the idea, but I just wanted to thank you for providing this great resource to us for free. Now the broke college kid can be equipped for global domination!!!!…or at least for an interesting life.

Thanks Tim!

The magnitude of having Arnold on this podcast is amazing and its on the same level of all the best ones. Having a clear vision wraps together all the other things I’ve learned through these podcasts. I’ve listened to the Josh Waitzkin, Ryan Holiday, Ed Cooke and Kevin Kelly interviews multiple times. Try new things, meditate, harness your eccentricities and building lifestyles around them, the obstacle is the way, create aha moments pre-input- merit vs virtue. I’d like to start a meet up group in Los Angeles to discuss these ideas.

This was a fantastic episode. Thank you for the podcast, it is truly a blessing.

Tim spoke about a follow up episode with Arnold. I had a couple of questions I am hoping Arnold could answer.

1. Arnold spoke about his strong vision moving him forward and enabling him to do great things. I have heard others say this and would like to know the step by step process Arnold uses to create and the vision and then what he does to use the vision (i.e. does he visualize in the morning and in the evening, throughout the day, etc).

2. Arnold mentioned that he made a lot of money in real estate and that you can only get the returns he did in one area of real estate these days. What is that one area of real estate?

Thanks!
