Tim Ferriss Interviews Arnold Schwarzenegger on Psychological Warfare (And Much More) (#60)

IMG_7091

In this episode, I interview the one and only Arnold Schwarzenegger… at his kitchen table.

In our conversation, we dig into lessons learned, routines, favorite books, and much more, including many stories I’ve never heard anywhere else.  I’m also giving away amazing goodies for this episode, so be sure to read this entire post.

As a starting point, we cover:

  • The Art of Psychological Warfare, and How Arnold Uses It to Win
  • How Twins Became His Most Lucrative Movie (?!?)
  • Mailing Cow Balls to Politicians
  • How Arnold Made Millions — BEFORE His Acting Career Took Off
  • How Arnold Used Meditation For One Year To Reset His Brain
  • And Much More…

Listen on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts.

You can find the transcript of this episode here. Transcripts of all episodes can be found here.

Ep 60: Tim Ferriss Interviews Arnold Schwarzenegger on Psychological Warfare (And Much More)

### NOTE: THE BELOW HAS SINCE ENDED. THANKS! ###

I WANT TO GIVE YOU GOODIES:

1) A signed copy of Arnold’s autobiography, Total Recall, personalized for you by Arnold himself.

2) A roundtrip ticket anywhere in the world Continental flies, $1,000 USD cold hard cash, or a long dinner with me in SF (and a flight from anywhere in the domestic US).  Pick one of the three.

To get both 1 and 2, all you have to do is this:

1) Promote the hell out of this episode this week, driving clicks to the iTunes page (ideal) for my podcast, this direct streaming link, or this blog post. If helpful, the shorter link fourhourworkweek.com/arnold forwards to this blog post.

2) Leave a comment on this post telling me what you did (including anything quantifiable), no later than this Friday, Feb 6, at 6pm PT. Comments must be submitted by 6pm PT. It’s OK if they’re in moderation and don’t appear live before 6pm. Note: You must include #arnoldpod at the top of your comment to be considered!

3) Within 7 days hence, I and my panel of magic elves will select the winner: he or she who describes in their comment how they drove the most downloads/listens.

4) That’s it! Remember: Deadline is 6pm PT this Friday, Feb 6.  No extensions.

5) Of course, void where prohibited, no purchase required, you must be over 21, no minotaurs, etc.

On a personal and professional level, I found this podcast to be one of the best you’ve put out. I am a fitness trainer with over 200 students and a PE teacher in San Jose, CA with similar numbers – Much of the information you and Arnold discussed was truthful and relevant in numerous regards. I feel that all of my students at the gym and my school would greatly benefit from this podcast (and all others) so I have relentlessly pushed everyone in my network to download it and share with their networks. I considered creating an assignment for students to reflect on the podcast, however, by my dept. chair, I was advised against it. Rest assure, the word is out on my end.

In previous podcasts you mentioned you are very passionate about education. I also share that passion and if I had the opportunity to meet with you, I would want our time to focus on this subject. I have specific ideas and goals (many that I credit to you and your guests – in addition to Seth Godin) to make some great changes in my content area and I believe you might have some too.

I look forward to your future work.

Warmest wishes,

F. Ramirez

This was amazing to listen to. As an ambitious 21 year old this type of content is exactly what I love (and NEED) to see!

This week I’ve promoted the episode through my semi-inactive Facebook pages as well as on Twitter to my DOZENS of followers. I have attached the shortened link (thanks by the way) to my email signature at work. On average I send 50 emails a day. I’ve had 6 people approach me at work saying they checked it out and only one of them knew who you were Tim. Surprisingly the coworkers that approached me were all women near retirement who live sedentary lifestyles. One of them, Donna, said she was inspired by the new perspective you offered her. I told her about 4HWW as well.

I have to applaud you Tim. You’re clearly providing beneficial and enticing content when busy, broke students are going out of their way to promote it!

When I first heard of you and your book (one, at the time) I subconsciously shrugged you off. “Oh cool, but I’ve got lots to read already… meh.” Yet somehow you kept popping up on my radar. The JRE, the re-invention of publishing that you and Amazon have sprung into action, the Duncan Trussel Family Hour, A DAMN ARNY INTERVIEW! You do well at staying relevant. Adblock clearly can’t stop you.

I admire you because you’re proof that being wealthy can be a win-win. The integrity of your content as well as the products and services you promote is inspiring. Some day we’ll chat in person, maybe even have dinner, but it won’t be because I won a contest. Keep it up, man.

Sincerely,

Jordan Mackinnon

#arnoldpod Awesome. I never enter contests or raffles… but here goes. I shared your link. I tagged a friend that you had met once and took a selfie with at some gym in the peninsula. That way, I’m not only peaking the interest of my friends, but her friends as well.. “who is this guy that Mickey is talking about AND Suzanne took a gym pic with?” Yes.. we are that influential. 😉

I might be too late for this, but here is why you should consider me for your incredible winner, anyway: 1) I will be in SF later this month or beginning of March. – too easy to meet, and you don’t have to pay for a flight. 2) I’m married and I’m not trying to get in your pants. 🙂 3) I have shared this on twitter, with my friends, and my Arnold aficionado personal trainer of a brother and his gym addict friends. 4) I wrote you a letter, to which you have never thanked me for. hehe 5) I’m actually not horrible company! hahahaha. #arnoldpod

great interview Tim (and Arnold) I’ve listened to it twice, and will listen a couple more times I’m sure.

Also good book recommendations, it was great to hear Arnold’s story, I’ve only known bits and pieces of the story, and it’s even more inspiring now.

How to pronounce the “Plop” toilet? Just like camping 🙂

I have been under deep stress/anxiety lately to the point of depression, mainly due to several projects I’m juggling all at once: a full-time job as an engineer, starting my own business, wrist surgery which led to time off the golf course (I turned pro in 2013) and no sense direction due to the cluster of things on my table… Naturally I could totally relate to what Arnold was talking about when he was dealing with anxiety right before his “career took off”. I’ve been wanting to meditate (especially after all of Tim’s podcast guests seem to make it work for them) and have tried to take it upon as a resolution for 2015, but haven’t been able to find any consistency whatsoever. Maybe TM is the answer I’ve been looking for. At least it has made me act upon it as I just signed up for a TM intro session… Wish me luck! Hopefully I’ll be sending Tim and Arnold a thank you card down the road for putting together this podcast and the subsequent succes I got from it 😉

Hey Tim. I posted the direct streaming link on my facebook page. I have turned on many of my friends to new podcasts and I think the Arnold one will be the one that gets my buds hooked on you too.

I would love to have dinner with you and just pick your brain on things you barely touched on in your 3 books.

Tim! So I took on this challenge but have taken the best approach to get the message out. I listen to your podcasts regularly and find so much value out of each and every episode so I wanted to put some of my own money in the mix. Rather than just doing what everyone else is doing and just posting in on my social media feeds (which I’m doing anyways) I put out a very targeted Facebook ad that I will be able to track click throughs. I wanted to find the MED, leveraging specific audiences that I know love Arnold and would be familiar with your work. I will post click-through information by the deadline and show proof through screen shots. (The question is how do I get that you guys?) I got this in the bag 🙂

I went old school and made a billboard, out of my truck. I drive a lifted Ford truck into Philadelphia every day. It is an eye catcher to start with, let alone with white paint plastered all over it. I painted your web site on the side, along with the hash tag #arnoldpod and the tag line of best podcast ever! Simple, effective, and intriguing to people stuck in traffic or passing by. Ok, here goes. I really wanted to win this. Been a big fan of Tim’s since 08 when I got 4HWW as a wedding gift. My life has changed a great deal since then; so we decided what we’d be happy to spend even if we didn’t win. $150 was what I came up with, and here’s what we did.

Most of this was done by my VA (*ahem* “ZA” for zirtual.com) Mimi. She’s good; anything that was a shortfall was due to my shortcomings in delegation; here’s what we did.

1. Facebook Fan Page for Arnold/Tim

https://www.facebook.com/timinterviewsarnold?ref=bookmarks

2. Whored out my PERSONAL friends list (which I NEVER do, but this was worth it) to like the Fanpage on my Facebook. Mum has already forgiven me.

3. Shared a global link on Google+

4. I do a lot of stuff with Fiverr. It’s actually the bulk of the work that Mimi does with me; she manages that account. We aimed to get 10 x regular site promotion sites, plus 5 x crazy ones. None of the crazy ones worked out; and 7 of the remaining got done by Friday (Aussie time). I’m sure it’s not as effective as we’d hoped for in terms of getting traffic; but I’ve never really promoted a site before. So this was a great learning experiment for me too.

Here they are the users (I can’t show the order confirmations because they’re linked to my profile user settings); each cost the regular 5 bones.

https://www.fiverr.com/kathcake – 700 adorable; probably personal friends.

https://www.fiverr.com/alexialuxury – 13,000 twitter followers

https://www.fiverr.com/utsav01 – About 30,000 contacts with Twitter, Facebook and G+

https://www.fiverr.com/jeni99 – 4.6M Facebook contacts

https://www.fiverr.com/emily1990 – 20M Facebook members (riiiiiiigghhht)

https://www.fiverr.com/phenix_creation – 1M Real Facebook members (Seems feasible, kinda)

https://www.fiverr.com/speedshare – 2M Facebook users.

5. I’ve had a youtube video that is one of the top in the world (I think) for saving your contacts to Gmail – 90k views, and about 350 daily now.

Put a link on that video for the podcast https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GphFYzAkSvo

6. Put the following script together for a radio commercial that this guy https://www.fiverr.com/dtongsports will broadcast on his radio channel.

“American author, entrepreneur, angel investor, and public speaker Tim Ferriss is developing quite a reputation for conducting blockbuster podcasts with extremely motivational people; and he’s just knocked it out of the park again with the ORIGINAL blockbuster: Mr Arnold Schwarzenegger!

That’s right, the Governator, the guy who made dudes who look like condoms stuffed with walnuts popular; reveals all his tactics on psychological warfare, language learning, how he was a millionaire BEFORE his movie career took off; and much much more, in this direct, and informative (though humorous) podcast on Ferriss’ website

To listen go to Fourhourblog.com

or

just say “Go to 4 hour blog.com” into the Google app on your smart phone”

This is still on order on Friday; but it’s Aussie time so it might shimmy in by the deadline PT.

I thought the condom/walnuts + the Google app thing gave it that something special. Like perfume on your term paper.

That’s it! I really want to win this, but I’ve learned so much from you Tim that I’m more concerned about you reaching whatever new crazy goal you’ve set for yourself in terms of this podcast.

That being said we tried to do something with Bill Burr, but it died on the vine. In one of Burr’s pieces he did a bit on Arny, and about what a great guy he is in his achievements. Burr also has a podcast that he does weekly; and he would probably enjoy the podcast and his listeners and fans would too. So you might want to hit him up; he lives in Cali, you guys probably have tea and scones together (cheat day) all the time.

I enjoyed the podcast. I listened to Arnolds audiobook last year; the one question I wanted to ask was if he thought his life/money/investing habits changed somewhat when he started carrying $1000 cash in his wallet. Such an amazing life story…

Best of luck Tim.

Ok, I may have been a little excessive here but hey… it’s a competition and I didn’t want to underestimate anyone.

So here’s what I did to promote the hell out of this podcast 🙂

– Used my free Fiverr gig to tweet your blog link to 1,300,000 twitter followers

– Purchased a Fiverr gig to shout out the podcast to 2,500,000 Facebook and Twitter followers

Tracing link: http://goo.gl/#analytics/goo.gl/NN9o3u/all_time

– Purchased another Fiverr gig to tweet the iTunes link to loyal 220,000 twitter followers and boost 500 retweets. https://twitter.com/greatspoke/status/563305775163277312

All of these promos I’ve used before are pretty legit in terms of driving real traffic and using actual, active accounts. Aside from this, I also did what I could with my own accounts:

– Forwarded your email to 10 of my good friends who listen to podcasts regularly.

– Shared Arnold’s bonus answer on my Facebook and tagged Arnie fans.

– Tweeted the podcast link on a Twitter page that I manage

– Played the podcast on my laptop for my friends and family, introducing them to your podcast for the first time.

All together this took me roughly 1 hour to set up including this post. I hope you see the results over the next few days. If it works out for me, I will use the $1000 to launch my Muse and if not, I’m happy to give back in my small way and consider it my thanks for helping me prioritize my dreams over my career. Thank you! 🙂

#arnoldpod What I did this week to promote the hell out of this interview…

1. Facebook

– Posted it on my page (800 possible downloads)

– Posted it on Onnit’s page ( 262,000 possible downloads)

2. Blogs

– Promoted to Huffington Post in all countries with title “Schwarzenegger sends politicians cow balls” ( Possible 500k downloads)

– Promoted on business insider with same title above but you already beat me to that!

-Reached out to Harper Spero & Rose Hoffmann who are the top writers for the blog at TM.com. I sent them the article that business insider wrote on Arnold and how TM changed his life. (Possible 100k downloads)

– Sent a request to the IhateTimFerriss wordpress to post an article about you begging people for downloads. ( Possible 5 downloads)

– Posted a contest on theweedblog.com, the contest was for people to listen to the interview and find the funniest impossible to understand sentence and make a meme out of it( piggy backed off your contest). I was going to give away a vaporizer to the winner but the site took down the post due to a conflicting sponsorship of other products. ( Possible 1,000 downloads due to the post being up for 4hours)

3.TV

– I reached out to Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel, and Seth Meyers regarding the Arnold and cow balls comet. ( If this comes up in one of their monologues you will reach your goal easy!)

– I wrote a letter to the today show because they just did a Tuesday segment on TM, so maybe they will do a follow up next Tuesday with Arnold and TM.

Your article is going global and 1million views will be a cakewalk! Thanks for the opportunity to meet you! Much appreciated!

Hey Tim, long time reader, listener and fan from Australia. I enjoy your podcast but respectfully suggest that you stop asking the “PUNCHABLE” question. It invariably derails the flow of your interview and momentarily turns an intelligent meeting between 2 enlightened people into a childish, awkward and “cringe worthy” encounter. This question does nothing to shed light on what makes successful people successful. You are better than that question.

Since reading 4HWW in 2007, I used your principles to build passive income, write a book that hit the top 20 on all of Amazon, build a six-figure business around my passion (teaching non-“designers” how to make beautiful design), and travel the world.

We’ve been at the same party a couple of times, and are second degree friends several times over. (You used to show up in my Facebook “people you may know” on a regular basis).

But, still haven’t gotten a chance to shake your hand and thank you in person. It would be great to grab dinner in SF, but in any case, “thanks.”

#arnoldpod So Tim, I read 4 Hour Hour Work Week, both old and revised, but I still work 40 hrs a week, I read 4hour Body and I am still really fat, I read 4 hour Chef and my cooking is not great, but I can deconstruct a concept. I love your brain and Arnold’s brain is even better than his body. (by read I mean bought and read in 1 day, even 4 HR Body) maybe we can come up with a new book. The 4 hr follow thru….

I am recent convert to podcast listening. I had 20+ hours in the car the past six days, and I thought I might as well spend the whole time listening to TFS. Thanks to OvercastFM’s speed tools, I was able to listen to 25 or more episodes, and I think this one with Arnold was one of my favorites. It was very cool to hear some of the lesser known stories of his past, especially how he used to psych out his opponents in competitions.

I moved away from California before Arnold became governor, so it was also very enlightening to hear him speak passionately about some of these more serious topics that he has tackled in his political career. It is so easy to pigeonhole people into categories, and it is fun to have those assumptions challenged like this.

I shared the podcast on my Facebook profile, and six of my friends have commented that they are adding it to their iPods right now. Based on my understanding of statistics, that definitely means there are sixty others who are new listeners but didn’t comment. Look it up, man — it’s math! 🙂

I also shared on Twitter a couple times how much I’ve been enjoying the podcast, before I saw that there was a competition going on.

You showed more personality from Arnold in this interview than many I have seen. Mostly through his stories. Which is awesome on your end and also shows why podcasting is so great. The bricklaying story can’t be told on TV like that. There’s never time to get into details. TV is about almost solely about expressing personality and podcasts allow people to reveal who they are through random stories you only get if you were hanging with that person. This is why I listen to podcasts and your show is one of the best man. Besides great advice and particular information (which u are big on) you allow people to get into great stories. People should not underestimate the rareness of good storytelling when most of what we get is under screen driven constraints. Anyway, Arnold is an amazing dude even if u don’t agree with his policies you should listen to this talk. Bill burr said it best, imagine going to a foreign country and becoming famous for lifting weights, then their biggest movie star, then marrying into one of their most iconic political families and then becoming a political leader of that country. Good luck with that. The guy knows how to be successful and he is def on my list of people that come to mind when I think of that word.

I shared this on facebook describing the brick laying story and said that Arnold life would make a great dark comedy, curb your enthusiasm style hbo show, each season taking place in a different decade. Then I quoted Bill burr. How could you not click after that?

Tweeted twice, one a condensed version of the former and the other tweet was me asking people to click so I can pitch my startup over dinner to Tim Ferriss and start innovating art and music. People I don’t know already retweeted that one : ). Sharpen your knives buddy and start marinating that steak.

I tweeted the link to this page out to my 856 Twitter followers. That automatically updated my personal Facebook profile status with the same link for my 1,438 friends (and their friends) to see (as long as they haven’t unfollowed me). I also shared all 3 links (this page, your iTunes link, and the direct streaming link) in a status update on my Facebook fan page, for my 9,495 (probably more by the time you see this) fans to see. I also boosted that post – for 20 bucks – to show up on Desktop News Feeds in all places classified as “majority native English speaking” countries (using a list from the University of Sheffield). Targeting was relatively broad; men and women ages 25-65+, interested in fitness & wellness, meditation, and spirituality (I emphasized in the post that Arnold had “reset his brain” with a year of TM). Facebook estimates the reach of that campaign to be between 13,000 and 35,000 people.

Thanks for continuing to produce great podcasts, and for this cool opportunity to get some goodies! 🙂

Arnold Schwarzenegger has always been one of my biggest inspirations…. a man who succeeded in rising to the top in everything from sport to entertainment to politics. I like to write down a motivational or inspirational quote every morning before I start the day and Mr. Schwarzenegger’s pearls of wisdom feature quite frequently, this being one of my favorites…

“We all have great inner power. The power is self-faith. There’s really an attitude to winning. You have to see yourself winning before you win. And you have to be hungry. You have to want to conquer.”

I am a bit of a self improvement devotee, my Achilles heel perhaps being that I try to absorb and do too much at once which is what coincidentally drew me to Tim’s amazing book The Four Hour Work Week. I admit that I had previously shunned this book based on the assumption that it was a gimmick (sorry Tim, a classic case of why you should not judge a book by its cover!)

I am about half way through and already I am seeing a vast improvement in my mindset and as a result my overall quality of life.

What makes this book so special is that unlike the historically “classical” self improvement books like How To Win Friends & Influential People or Think & Grow Rich, The Four Hour Work Week leads you down the path to the websites, the social media, the podcasts etc where a whole other world of inspiration and education is opened up.

I feel like I have discovered a whole new world and I love it!!

So while yes I will absolutely do the obvious which is share your links on all my social media sites… FB, Twitter, LinkedIn etc but more importantly I will do what I do best which is connect people. When I am excited or passionate about something, I don’t just tell ten people….. I tell everyone!

I am quite an energetic and enthusiastic person by nature so when I find something that inspires and I feel compelled to share with my friends and family, I do so in a very passionate manner!! I give a 110%

Tim,

To start, I shared on twitter via @jwebking. I shared on facebook. I also wrote an article for my barely mediocre blog. It was about three pieces of wisdom I had learned from guests on your podcast. Maria Popova, and her method of indexing books using the front pages for themes and page numbers to quickly recall important information. Peter Diamandis and Peter Thiel, for their advice to think 10X bigger and avoid the crowd. Lastly of course, Arnold, and his tips on using psychological warfare on your competitors. All of the names were linked to the respective podcast episodes. Basically I was using the same tactics as everyone else. That’s when I realized I had to go the opposite, and avoid the mean.

Using a time tested method ( http://i.imgur.com/6xYtVnl.jpg ), I decided to REALLY DRIVE TRAFFIC to your site.

http://i.imgur.com/2SpwxBO.jpg

http://i.imgur.com/v3JxgTa.jpg

Since 1 out of 5 people actually admit to surfing the web while driving, I figured this tactic could yield a good conversion rate. Especially because Dan Ariely has a study out of his book “Predictably Irrational” that says 95% of people claim they are above-average drivers. You know at least 3 other people are lying.

Next, I went to the library – which is a grossly overlooked resource these days. There, I changed all 24 computer web browser homepages to http://www.fourhourworkweek.com/arnold.

http://i.imgur.com/nKUgjMe.jpg

http://i.imgur.com/Ds1b6zM.jpg

I went and checked out the computers the next day, and all of your books had been checked out. While it’s possible people may not have taken the time to listen to the podcast, at least something positive came of it.

Finally, I looked to the sky. Unfortunately all of the banner waving Cessna pilots are retired now due to lack of work. Who knew? But this is what it would’ve looked like: http://i.imgur.com/zC69q7k.jpg

Thanks for all you have done to increase the quality of life for so many of us, Tim. You’ve made us all a little more healthy, wealthy and wise.

Also, I appreciate you and your magic elves taking the time to go through all of these submissions, and consider mine. I know your time isn’t unlimited.

Life is short. Pick me.

#arnoldpod Boom, went to the Arnold Fan page with 13k followers, and posted it there using http://bit.ly/TimFerrissandArnold, also set up my Odesk colleagues to help me spread the words to their local markets internationally (Philippines and India respectively), which according them them, have a huge fan following for Arnold.

In fact, it was stated, and I quote: “Arnold Schwarzengger is very popular; it is just like Michael Jackson, Arnold Schwarzenegger, the Friends, and Obama. Everyone knows them, even little kids.”

Keep producing these blogposts Tim, and I imagine your name will be there too, although I don’t image you want it to be.

Hi Tim,

this Podcast was for me the best by far. For several reasons: I am German studying in Austria, so I feel kind of connected to Arnold, the topics you talked about with Arnold, his career, how he managed difficulties and last, Arnolds pronunciation, since I face the same difficulties with my German here in Austria and with my English ability. For all these reasons I recommended this podcast to all my friends who I met in person during this week, since this is in my opinion the best way to recommend something. I´d rather follow an personal advice, than just clicking on a link on a social media website. Nevertheless I posted about the podcast on some social media sites, just in case.

This was the first podcast you made, which I listened to twice, to get every bit out of it.

Keep going with your podcast. Its super entertaining.

All the best, Chris

I’m a long time fan of the podcasts, so thought I have a go at this competition!

1. I created a unique URL to share, so you can easilly identify my avalance of traffic: http://fourhourworkweek.com/2015/02/02/arnold-schwarzenegger/?supersource=thisisthejezwebbyouwant&utm_content=bufferd9f42&utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook.com&utm_campaign=buffer

2. I shared this on Facebook, promoting the post for better exposure in my network. Under normal circumstances, about 16% of my followers will see a post from me, so the investment should boost those numbers.

3. I also promoted the post to your followers, in case they missed it.

4. I turned my attention to Twitter, creating a number unique scheduled posts , and promoted a few of those, again targettting your followers, as a large number of these will have missed your announcements.

5. I cross fingers and wait!

Dear Tim & his Elves

I’ve been working solidly on this since Tuesday evening.

A big chunk of the time was spent writing a blog post that I hope people will share.

The blog post is here:

http://www.waynekille.com/htwb.html

To promote the post (which contains no less than nine links to your iTunes page…) I’ve contacted university sports team captains, athletic union presidents, etc and used jedi mind tricks (learned from you and others) to encourage them to share it with their teams.

The effectiveness of of my campaign will begin to be displayed here by Monday (in the form of screenshots from google analytics):

http://www.waynekille.com/stats.html

I am trying to reach and appeal to the people who will be most likely interested in your podcast (and my blog post) and who have access to large numbers of like-minded people, with whom they could share.

Thanks again Tim for all your hard work and sharing, even this competition. It’s been a great learning experience.

Take care

Wayne

P.S. I won’t mind doing the washing up 😉

Social Media promotions: Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Google Plus, and LinkedIn, and reddit.

Word of mouth – telling everyone I meet how they must help me influence the panel of elves.

Bonus – My 3 year old asked me no less than 7 times this week when I was “Going to go visit Tim.”

Low tech approach at a small business conference this week. As a facilitator for the conference, simply reviewed the 4HWW principles of effectiveness vs efficiency, the 80/20 rule and writing down your top to do list items on a 3×5 card and getting them done by 11am. Worked in the Arnold podcast as a way to introduce you with another celebrity.

Quantifiable: Hand in person and group conversations with 50 people.

Please keep up the great work.

Tim, i tried. I thought tweeting to some high level people and getting a retweet would promote traffic from a source more credible than myself. Particularly joe rogan because his fan base is insane and you were on his show.

Nobody retweeted though! fail! I was going to tape signs saying #arnoldpod or something to that effect on my car and drive around the city but there’s a snow storm and they cancelled canada. Perhaps blocking my windows with giant bristol board signs would anger the RCMP as well.

Hey Tim,

I thoroughly enjoyed the podcast. I didn’t get too fancy in my methods of spreading the word. Aside from some retweets and favorites on Twitter, I opted for the low tech approach of telling everyone that I know directly and shoeing them how to find it. My goal here was to be able to generate some real, in person discussion around our takeaways from the interview. not easy to quantify, but it certainly enhanced my week!

Hi Tim,

I suggested people win a dinner with you by crossposting on the social media platforms I am active on, so I would stand a better chance myself….

The data:

A public post on Facebook

A tweet to 1368 followers

A blog post with relevant topics included on Quora (Venture Capital, Tim Ferriss, 4 Hour Body and 4 Hour Workweek) with a potential reach of 2,855,600 people, 2500+ followers. I blew 5350 credits to promote the post direct to 1030 people, which was also reshared to Twitter.

Finally, a LinkedIn post about it, public and to 750 connections and a reshare to Twitter.

When I win, I will fly from Amsterdam to SF on my own dime and I would love to explore how your hacking skills and learning methodologies apply to team development and strategy execution, the field I hack and work in. (And wrote a book about: http://amzn.to/18UAchC It’s on promotion on Kindle until tomorrow, coincidentally). Oh, and Buenos Aires, and tango and dry-aged beef and wine, please, as well, as topics.

Best,

Hi Tim,

I’m taking an unconventional approach to your contest. My skill is sales not mass marketing. I’m guessing this strategy has a 95% chance of completely embarrassing or disqualifying myself. But, I’m a believer in taking risks…

What if I was able to get one very valuable person to listen to your podcast and personally reach out to you? Perhaps, someone who would be interesting to interview on the show or team with you on a marketing campaign?

What I’ve done is collected contact information for 10 marketing directors at companies I felt would truly resonate with your fans. I sent them a personal email like the one below. You can qualify my experiment by monitoring if any of these people email you directly.

• • Susan Haney, Gaiam, Vice President of Marketing

• • Elisa Haidt, TripIt, Technology Marketing Director

• • Mirelle Leguia, TripIt, Senior Manager, Acquisition Marketing

• • Diane Chour, Airbnb, Head of Global Media

• • Jim Coakley, Kumon, Branding, Marketing, Advertising Strategist

• • Tania Enders, Tutor.com, Marketing Director

Hello XXXXXX,

I’m a volunteer media coordinator at the Tim Ferris show. Are you familiar with his books and podcast? We are trying to connect with your marketing department to see if makes sense to team up on some campaigns. Would you be the best person to connect with? Tim’s manager Donna can be reached directly at donna@fourhourbody.com.

I encourage you to look at his latest content, an interview with Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Please let us know if we should discuss further,

CG

This is how I published the podcast in my social networks “If you share this post in your social networks you can win a trip to Miami with me. *Certain conditions apply. fourhourworkweek.com/arnold ‪#‎arnoldpod‬” I can afford to pay an extra ticket to Miami for the privilege of dining with the great Tim Ferris. ;D

#arnoldpod Arnold is my hero! I blogged about my struggle with meditation and linked to this podcast. http://vjplz.tumblr.com/post/110260991964/meditation-leads-to-black-holes-of-curiosity

Hi Tim! When I first read the post I started by texting some of my friends with the link. Then I did the first round of sharing by posting to Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, and LinkedIn.

I then searched for trending Twitter hashtags and created a post related to Valentines Day. I also posted a photo of my dinner while listening to the podcast on Instagram using hashtags related to popular food topics.

I do not have a large audience following, however, on social media. So I began to get creative and utilized my organic connections. I made a sign on paper saying “Commuting? Have a listen to The Tim Ferriss Show podcast!” And included a link on it. I taped it to the back of my car and then proceeded to sit in rush hour traffic on the 405 in Los Angeles. When I went to the gym I also made a sign that said “Need something to listen to while you sweat? Have a listen to The Tim Ferriss Show podcast” and included a link on it. I taped it to my back and chose the front treadmill so everyone could see it while I worked out. I left it in the locker room for future members to see. I posted photos of these pursuits on Instagram and Twitter targeting popular hashtags such as #fitness or #tgif. I tried to reach broad audiences by using hashtags.

I also plan to ride back through traffic this afternoon with the sign. I’ve noticed that the largest interaction comes from Instagram, I imagine because Twitter can get very crowded.

I may not have a large following or large resources online, but you certainly can’t fault me for trying to drive traffic to the iTunes page! (Pun may or may not be intended) I’m also using the visualization you and Arnold talked about to picture myself having that dinner.

Hey Tim and friends.

I shared the interview via email with about 100 parents of the kids I coach. I also posted it to my Facebook page, my company page and twitter….

Oh. I also baked 60 cookies. Half chocolate butterscotch chip, half gluten free-vegan-paleo, and gave them out on the mall in DC to anyone who would download the interview or start streaming it in front of me.

I’ll say this…. It was a pretty humbling experience. But I did get to yell “free cookies!” In public and met some cool people 🙂 I have pictures on my twitter and fb page.

Pick me. You won’t regret it!

A big fan and entrepreneur,

Meghan

Better late than never, I participated in the Psychological Warfare share initiative starting 2/5/2015 @11:00 pm EST. I chose to post it on Linked-in because that is my most #passionate network. However, they care about me and some may not know who you are so I told my story and shared how you’ve impacted my life with the purpose of sharing Arnold’s experience by directing them to your interview on i-tunes.

Posted to my Linked in, then I shared the story on Facebook with my friends, family and fans on my person and business pages. The best part was playing on my Twitter accounts @ButtTherapist @autismaware @CRACKERJACK9 and @Simparel. I tried a few strategies on twitter with interview quotes, awesome images and tagging some people that typically give a 2 cents about what I post. I don’t have a million followers but AWESOMENESS surrounds me.

EXCERPT: “The American dream never included a 4-hour work week until Tim Ferriss suggested it was possible; for everyone. It was the 1st book that changed my life. As much as I enjoyed reading Helen Keller in 4th grade; change my life… it did not. Psychological Warfare. The purpose of this post is to motivate you to click this link :XXX but the underlining reason for this post is to share my experience as proof that we can inspire each other to live a more meaningful life and to share #Arnolds experience as proof that we each have our own Psychological War that ……read more………Redefining success is key to recognizing what the definition of happy is to YOU. Have I motivated you to click this link? XXX I’d really enjoy a dinner with the dude that redefined my definition of success, cleared my path to achieve quality of life and inspired me to live the life I want rather than waiting to live the life I was dreaming about.”- Casey Golden

I understand you don’t LOVE url’s being shared here but since the contest is to motivate participation I feel it is relevant to share how each of us attempted to do this. I posted this: http://linkd.in/1D3OR4V and turned all of your links in to my own Bitly. to track my performance. I wish I’d have had the whole week to play.

My metrics will be as of 611am PT time because I am in meetings all day on EST. Dinner would be nice but I did this to do you a solid for everything you have done for me; knowing it or not. Thank you for showing me the way. I hope my post motivated a few clicks and between all of us we’ve inspired 1 more person.

URL Performance:

My Post: 11 clicks

The Book: 1

The Stream: 2

The i-tunes: 6

Total: 20 track-able clicks and a plethora of Twitter activity and FB shares 87% USA

Cheers!

Casey

Hello there. I loved this. I live in Spain and the image we have of Arnold here is what we see in the movies. I thought he was only muscle and kind of dumb (with all the respect in the world). I was shocked when I heard him talking about policies and roman emperors. He is not only smart (a lot smarter than the average politician here) and cultivated. Totally humbled by this.

I accepted the challenge to share it, not only cause meeting Ferriss would be awesome but also cause I believe this is gold stuff. Thanks.

This is what I’ve done:

I’m translating and transcripting the audio in Spanish so I can get my friends to read it. I’ll share it here once it’s done. I’m sure you got a big hispanic audience as well so they may benefit from it.

I found fan blogs of Arnold and shared with them via email, Twitter and FB the link to the podcast. These are the fan blogs if anyone want to subscribe to them.

http://www.schwarzenegger.it/

http://www.theterminatorfans.com

I shared the link with the guys in charge of the blog in the Schwarzenegger Institute as I felt the people over there would appreciate getting to know better the person that gives name (and funds I imagine) to the institution. Here is the link to their site fyi.

http://schwarzenegger.usc.edu/

I shared it in my blog, my fb and twitter personal accounts.

I managed to find relevant lessons from the interview to be shared in my three so far unsuccesful muse projects. Which are, well, unsuccesful in terms of revenue but with some audience nonetheless.

As I learnt of this on Tuesday morning, I managed to create a paper banner and get it inside and posted in the Santiago Bernabeu stadium for the Real Madrid – Sevilla football match. This was pretty amusing. You can find the pics from this adventure here:

The metrics after these various gigs aren’t near as productive in terms of clics as what I’ve seen in others. However, I’m sure the elves (hello, elves!) will see the value in the efforts to help the right people access this piece of content and hopefully learn at least one thing from it.

I got 58 clics in this bitly (bit.ly/44arnold) and 3 in the Bernabeu one (bit.ly/4arnold). Hopefully, a few others from my first intents. I only did the bitly when I realised I couldn’t fit the whole link in the banner… 🙂

Alea jacta est

Thanks for the opportunity! Keep the good work.

#arnoldpod Tim, I love your interview with Arnold. I shared with my friends on facebook and on the facebook page for my brand, Planet Good. https://www.facebook.com/planetgood?ref=bookmarks

I also tweeted out this podcast to our Planet Good followers on Twitter, at @planetgood. I’m practicing one of the lessons from Arnold. I started my today with a 20 minute meditation, and I’m following up tonight with another 20 minute meditation before I go to sleep. I’m going to do this every day and evening. Looking forward to bringing more focus and clarity to my workdays. Thank you! I hope to win this contest and meet with you in person. I’m a huge fan of your books. Best, Giancarlo
