I’m looking for the perfect Managing Editor.
This person will be my right hand for all things related to content. Some of things you’d get to work with:
– One of the world’s most popular blogs (this one). Typically 1.5-2 million readers per month. See “The Tim Ferriss Effect” on Forbes for a funny description of what it can do.
– One of the world’s most popular podcasts — The Tim Ferriss Show — selected by iTunes as “Best of 2014” and often the #1 business podcast across all of iTunes (at times, #1 across all categories).
– Email broadcasts to nearly 500,000 people.
– Social media accounts that reach millions of people.
– New top-secret projects for 2015, including high-end video and new book stuff.
Things would start with a paid one-month trial, probably around 20 hours per week. If things go gangbusters, there would be potential to expand significantly from there. Competitive pay and tons of interesting options.

JOB DESCRIPTION
To help me focus exclusively on writing, interviewing, and other content creation, I need someone who’s expert at handling quite a bit.
The Managing Editor’s responsibilities would include, but not be limited to, the following:
* Spearheading the editorial calendar for the blog, podcast, email, etc. for the next 6-12 months. I’m too ad hoc and last-minute right now. It’s unnecessarily stressful. I need someone to manage most or all of it, including…
* Helping me reach out to would-be podcast guests and book them, prep them, confirm them, etc., whether celebrities, world-class investors, or scientists.
* Helping me draft blog posts that I don’t otherwise have the bandwidth to adapt. For instance, great unused parts of The 4-Hour Body that are currently Word docs with footnotes, etc. A past example of such adaptation: The Truth About “Homeopathic” Medicine.
* Sourcing great guest posts and guest authors. Here are two different but equally successful examples: Hacking Kickstarter and 20 Things I’ve Learned From Traveling Around the World for Three Years.
* Helping plan and implement content promotion. This would include social accounts reaching millions of people, cutting-edge experimental stuff, and more.
* Experiment with different ways of increasing traffic (syndication, managing SEO/SEM contractors, etc.).
PERKS
* You’d be working behind the curtains on high-profile projects. You’ll see all of my projects first, and get to play a critical role in their creation and launch. This could range from interviewing icons to wordsmithing posts or book chapters that will be seen by millions of people.
* I will ask your advice and look to you for original ideas, new experiments, and more.
* If you’re in SF (or willing to visit), you will also be invited to spend time with the most impressive people in my network. In fact, that would be part of your job.
* I might send you great tequila, there will be strange assignments, and you get to work with a weirdo. That’s me. There won’t be a lot of boredom.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Please note that most of the below are “must have,” not “nice to have.”
First and foremost, you need to understand and love the goal of my content — helping people unlock their latent potential, and providing non-obvious toolkits to that end.
These types of stories must make you excited to conquer the world, do huge things, and tackle big problems. Alignment with the above mission is the most important, but you should also:
1) Have at least 2-4 years of writing/editorial experience
2) Be a great writer and equally good at editing/improving other people’s writing.
3) Have managed tight deadlines and successfully put together editorial calendars.
4) Ideal: Have managed other writers.
5) Ideal: Comfortable with WordPress.
6) Ideal but not required: Live in or near SF. Remote is also possible.
I need someone with relevant experience. This is non-negotiable. I cannot take fresh grads or people who don’t check most of the above boxes. I’m hiring a pro, not looking to mentor someone from ground zero.
DOWNSIDES
A friend and well-known editor for a massive site cautioned me about this section. In his words:
“[It’s] great to tell people about these, but maybe be a little less brutal with your self-descriptions? These are reasonable expectations in my trade.”
Alas, I still prefer the Shackleton approach to job descriptions. Being my Managing Editor will not be easy. Rewarding? Definitely. Exciting at many times? Absolutely. Easy? Not likely. Think of it like a professional sports team. I’m not going to haze you or anything stupid, but my content works because I take it very, very seriously. We’re here to create posts that are more valuable (traffic-wise) two years after publication than the week we put them out. We want epic content that gets linked to by “real” media all over the world. If you have the right personality for it, you’ll love this. But…
Here are some fair expectations:
* I’m an unrelenting perfectionist. If you’re not the same, it will probably make you insane.
* I live and die by deadlines. They are absolutely sacred, and I am merciless about this.
* You will need to be self-directed and very self-organized. Besides inflexible deadlines, I won’t provide a lot of structure. I assume you’re bringing a lot of your own process and best practices.
* You need good mental and physical stamina, and you MUST have the discipline to “turn off” and recharge during off hours. You should have a regular exercise regimen or activities for decompressing.

Hey Tim, an unrelated comment but I just wanted to tell you about a small modification I made to the “Effortless Superhuman” Chapter that exploded my results.
Your program involves doing the sumo deadlft 3x a week or bringing it back to 2x if you can’t recover in time. I hit a plateau pretty quickly even doing it just 2x. I decided to try bringing it back to just 1x a week and it changed everything. I’m now up to 330lbs comfortably. I feel like superman haha. All the best for the new year!

Oh and by the way, your post would already have been scheduled to be published well in advance of the 15 minute window when the hypothetical tech glitch manifests itself.
But in all seriousness I would tease your expectant social audience with details of late breaking developments related to the scheduled piece that you are vetting as we speak requiring a little more time.
So, you would lie to his readers? I agree that the post would already be scheduled to post from within WordPress – but to blatantly mislead his readers? What if he wasn’t “vetting” any of this late breaking content you mentioned? Maybe he’s already 3 months ahead in his content creation/ publication and doesn’t have time to add to this article? You just made him look twice as bad. Missed deadline and forcing him to add new content or make him look bad. tsk tsk.
Scheduling a post is a great way to help ensure it goes up at the right time, but there are still things that could go wrong. What if there’s a serious hosting outage right before the post is due to go live? What if the site is under attack? Maybe someone was working on the site (theme, plugins, etc.) and inadvertently screwed it up? Given that there are a lot of influential people being featured, there’s also a remote chance someone could change their mind about allowing something to be published – requiring a last minute rewrite or redaction.
Most of that stuff is fairly uncommon, but if you’re dealing with serious deadlines on a high volume site, it’s worth considering the possibilities and figuring out what preparations and backup plans can be made.

I love the honesty of this job description. I’ve had a few gigs in my career where it was not so open. Although I am a great writer I am not those other things so I won’t bother you with that, but if you are ever in the need for a great CFO. I’ll knock your socks off. I’ve done it for decades and worked for people like Spielberg and his team so I know how to do world-class.

First of all, I would like to say that I don’t usually comment on blogs and I mostly lurk, but I just wanted to reach out to you and say THANK YOU for everything that you are. I am a huge (but quiet) fan and I admire your dedication to inspire a lot of people in discovering and acting on their potential. I am one of those people you have inspired.
Secondly, I am extremely interested in this post, however, you did mention you are strict on experience. My editing and writing experience per se are mostly informal projects like my corporate newsletter, my college newsletter, passion projects, and a few of my friends’ stuff. So I am not sure if those would qualify for the “experience” you are looking for. Nevertheless, I believe I have more than what you are expecting for a managing editor and we share the same passions. I believe passion is a gem. I also have a fresh set of eyes on a lot of things, which is usually what fuels innovation and creative ideation.

It’s killing me that I’m not entirely qualified for this job! After 20 years working in a family business I’m having to change careers (which, if I had time to tell the entire story, you would agree is likely a blessing). Writing has been a life long passion for me, and helping other people is an inherent part of who I am (to my own detriment, at times). I love taking a story and making it more accessible to the reader…thus, I do believe my “calling” is some form of writing. I may live in Canada, but I’m in the right timezone. That said, although I am a quick study, I don’t have word press experience and I don’t have technical experience managing other writers (aside from inside my former business – which was an entirely different field). So, I’ve wasted your time bemoaning my lack of qualifications…therefore, I’ll follow up with a very Canadian “sorry”. You are one inspirational individual!! Best of luck to you with your search!
Do it … worst case scenario, nothing changes with only <10 minutes of your time used. Best case could change the course of your life for the better. Ergo, you should submit your application. Remember the contest in Chapter 4 of the 4HWW … do not overestimate your competition.

My experience with incorporating management professionals into my own business has inspired me to pass on some knowledge to you. These are in random order and please use Bruce Lees’ maxim when considering them: “Take what is useful and discard the rest.”
You are seeking a self motivated, driven, perfectionist with good mental and physical stamina. The problem is that you are looking for someone that can run a business on their own without being told what to do by you. They are more likely to call their own game than try to please you for money.
You will likely have greater success hiring for trust and malleability than you will with hiring for technical proficiency, self direction, and previous experience. The dynamics of human interaction are simply too complex for you to have but the remotest chance of finding a long term cohort by using the Craigs List method of job posting. You are more likely to find a short term, overzealous, soon to be entrepreneur who drives their own projects to
completion. Someone that you know or a friend of a friend will probably have a greater possibility of succeeding with you than someone who simply filled out the questionnaire satisfactorily.
The last thing I will say is that you may want to have your agent or another manager do the hiring for two reasons. 1. To provide an unbiased and possibly more accurate evaluation of the candidates and 2. It may be easier to recommission the person elsewhere should it become necessary.
I have taken the time to write these suggestions to you with the sincerest hopes that they help in any way to help you find the best person for the position.

Meeting tight deadlines, handling adverse pressure, and ‘getting it done’ were the norm, not the exception. Very disappointing – the real Tim Ferris would build his own virtual managing editor, like Tony Stark’s Jarvis! It would be maintained by an insanely smart network of global editors and curiously skilled mutants, who would pay Tim to be linked into his network – knowing that the global exposure would be more than worth it. Proceeds from this new publishing engine would help to fund Ferris Industries’ expansion into wearable learning devices and thought activated AR gaming gear.
You must be referring to the original and less knownTim Ferris from 1944. The Model S (hence the additional S at the end of the model name) featured on this blog wasn’t built until 1977. It was one of the first cars that was designed to be more effective, rather than just more efficient.

Are you open to candidates who don’t have a public record of high-traffic long-form content, and more of a background in high-stress project management and talent/influencer relationships? Change in 2015? Bored? Defeat computer (algorithm) playing Quoridor in less than 5 games. Spend 30 minutes on research (strategy) then play 1st game. Rules to Quoridor – spend no more than 10 seconds. Toughest task = stalling the brain to not overheat trying to compute the endless combinational moves available playing thee most SIMPLISTIC game known to mankind. If you have a background in game theory and/or structural engineering – enjoy your Holiday time off.

You had me at, “perfectionist.” My biggest pet peeve is when people use the wrong there/their/they’re, followed by a close second of the incorrect use of your/you’re, I make my friends text me again if they use the wrong one 🙂 Ha Ha!
Question about your deadlines. Completely agree, and think the “pencils down date” should be days prior to the actual deadline, but curious if you would rather rush something to be on time, or have your work be “perfect” and ensuring accuracy, and miss a deadline.

In review of my application, I do hope that you find similarities between myself and that which you described. I look at myself as a Jack of All Trades and am currently working within a role where writing, interviewing, reaching out to both clients and candidates to book interviews, prepare them and confirm them, while still “handling quite a bit” else, are my top priorities.
I have loved writing for as long as I can remember, but even before then I loved to edit. I am, at the root, a corrector and perfecter. As you will see on my resume, I have been compensated for both for roughly two years now. This, I hope, clears up requirements one through three. I have not managed other writers, outside of my unpaid experience working as an Editor for “Silver Lining”, which I mention in my application. You will also find therein that I am comfortable with WordPress and although I do not live in the sunny state of California, I would love to visit and would without hesitation consider relocating.
Lastly, I do hope that from the given information you find that I am most definitely “excited to conquer the world, do huge things, and tackle big problems”. Being a college student studying business and media, reading this post is like reading my ideal future job description. I would love to hear a play by play audio or video account of your hiring process. There is a podcast called “StartUp” by Alex Blumberg from This American Life & Project Money that does an excellent job of recording and displaying his daily interactions with VC’s, potential business partners and even advertisers. I think an episode of your podcast in this manner would be unique and ultimately work well. I’m really looking forward to the possibility of working with you (and your newfound Managing Editor 😉) in 2015 when more opportunities arise. Keep fighting that good fight.

Hey – if you have a hard time deciding between a couple finalists, try asking about their experience with accessibility. 30% of Americans have a disability so it’s important to make sure they have access.
I’m deaf and a lot of videos are not captioned and podcasts don’t have transcripts. It’s kind of a bummer and I’ve started to tune out your emails because lately more often than not the post is about a podcast. The blind and physically disabled have different needs (some cannot use mouses so they have to use keyboard commands to move around the screen).
Captioning and transcribing does have a lot of SEO benefit, and if done right it can be auto-translated into other languages, making you accessible world-wide.
Elise, I never thought about transcription helping people in this way. Now I’m going to look into transcribing materials for that specific use. I type 135 wpm and was actually able to pay for my college education with this skill. If the podcasts weren’t so long, I’d transcribe them for you, but I hope soon your needs will be accommodated.
Also, I have a hard time listening to the podcasts without something to look at. My mind wanders. Same with news — the trend is now for a lot of it to be presented in videos, but I’d rather read my news stories than watch them. Several times I’ve thought of posting this request, so I’m glad you did. Tim, please provide transcripts and consider adding video to at least some of the interviews. From a historical perspective, I think it will be a matter of great regret that only soundbites will be left from these amazing interviews!

That’s a great point Lisiwisi. We use it a lot for optimizing YouTube channels, and I believe a lot of opportunities in this area for publishing podcast transcripts for accessibility or collecting to make an ebook.

1. (very common) Although the form appears to entertain the idea that someone might apply from outside the US, it rejects non-US phone numbers… duh!
2. There’s no facility to upload a CV… which would be nice. A lot of potential editors will have worked hard on explaining their skills and experience in their CV, and your form won’t capture much of it, although the LinkedIn link should help.

I’ve been a critical care nurse for 14 years and I’ve seen some pretty crazy stuff for sure… the ER and ICU are ridiculous places to work… often times unimaginable… society at it’s worst can be ugly!!!…… Sorry off track. So I’m a HATER of the pharmaceutical world! It’s disgusting! Seriously even the physician’s are brain washed to prescribe a medication for an alignment that could so logically be fixed with OMG…. I’m going to get crazy here…. CHANGING THE DIET!!!! I mean seriously this is NOT ROCKET science here!!!! Ok so that being said. I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s disease last year and am soooooooo frustrated with the medical community! It wasn’t until i saw a functional medicine doctor that I finally found out all the obvious symptoms were related to my thyroid. It is the most common autoimmune disease in women and yet we are soooo undertreated!!!! I saw TWO Endocrinologist who drew labs looked at them and because my TSH wasn’t out of rang wouldn’t treat me even though I had all these symptoms. I went to see a functional medicine doctor and the first thing she asked after reviewing my symptoms was why no one had addressed my thyroid issue!!!! I wanted to cry!!! It was the first time I felt like I wasn’t CRAZY!!! I did go on medication for a while and then after lots and lots of research I went off and started taking supplements to help support my thyroid and I feel like a different person! Hashimoto’s is the most common cause of low thyroid and guess what this will be a real shocker it’s related to DIET!!! Imagine that!!!! I would love if you had a leading expert talk about low thyroid. The data about diet and medication is just soooo mixed up and of course there is so many different schools of thought!!!! HELP ME and millions of other women who suffer from this miserable disease!!! It’s so frustrating we are so written off and labeled complainers and given antidepressants and pain medication to shut us up!!!!!!

My experience is primarily as a freelance writer and editor in chief for a San Francisco print media company founded during the Gold Rush, whose advertising and circulation model was radically different from blogging. I have been blogging independently and as a paid contributor for diverse brands since 2000 (not to mention doing other paid writing such as conference coverage and white papers). I’d be eager to work on a truly viral standalone blog like yours, bringing my understanding of journalism, editorial quality, refreshing angles, Bay Area high-tech industry/creativity/culture and deadline-driven efficiency to bear in a field where the numbers don’t lie.

First of all, I am thoroughly impressed by your confidence and the Grammy! What surprised me about some of the comments above was the lack of confidence to even apply.
When we truly want something in life, we have to go for it. The worst thing that can happen is that we don’t get it and then we try again. Yesterday I read the introduction of “The Alchemist” — one of my favorite books, along with 4HWW 🙂 which has sold over 65 million copies — where Paulo Coelho mentions four obstacles that discourage people from confronting their dreams. Here they are:
1. First obstacle is that as a child we are led to believe that some dreams are impossible and we eventually adapt this belief system. A few years ago, a 5-year-old boy told me that he wanted to be a superhero when he grew up and I asked, “So what do superheros do?” and he said “They save the world.” If you ask me, that’s not a bad dream to aspire to.
2. Second, even when we know what we want, we don’t want to abandon everything in order to follow our dreams — aka quit our job, start a new business, join the “New Rich”, etc. — in fear that we might hurt our loved ones. Coelho says, those who truly wish us well are prepared to accompany us on the journey. Don’t listen to the nay-sayers, keep your eye on the ball and go for it!
3. Third obstacle is fear, the obvious one. It’s the fear of failure of “what if it doesn’t work out” mentality. The other day I was surprised to learn that John Paul DeJoria, co-founder of Paul Mitchell, was living in his car before he started the hair care company. Now he’s worth billions. We have to try folks, otherwise why are we all here?
4. Last, but not least the fourth obstacle, the fear of realizing our dream. They say the difference between successful people and everyone else is that last extra step. Coelho says if we believe ourselves worthy of the thing we fought so hard to get then we understand why we’re here.
The point is, just go for it or as Richard Branson says, “Screw it, just do it!”

After implementing some of your positivity hacks, I lost my job at PwC, as they didn’t have enough work for me, and caught me working on a startup, which was just acquired within 18 months.
I write here and there for some sporting publications, but have never focused on it so there is no doubt there are people with experience at big publishing firms.
However, being a past elite athlete, I do have close connections to the likes of Usain Bolt, Mo Farah, The Brownlee Brothers (Triathlon Gold, Bronze London Olympics), Sally Fitzgibbon (Google her) and many more including athlete managers.

Besides familiarity with wordpress, wanting to change the world (in a positive way), and being a weirdo, I don’t fit the rest of the must have criteria. Something unrelated, are you interested to know about a project that tries to bring evolution to the way students learn together, by making working in group projects more natural and pleasant, and eventually make the whole learning experience more social and natural?
