The Land Rush: 48 Hours to Claim $4,000,000 in Prizes

PLEASE NOTE: THIS PROMOTION IS OVER. THANKS!

Have you ever gone on safari in Africa?

Been trained by world champions?

Crossed the Atlantic on a 119-foot schooner?

Taken a private tour of an Indian archipelago, complete with tigers, crocodiles, and… Miss India?

Now you can. Or… if you simply want thousands of dollars of cutting-edge gadgets, you can have those, too.

Welcome to “The Land Rush,” intended to be the largest book promotion in history…

The goal of this post is to offer the prizes of a lifetime, and to help The 4-Hour Body beat The Guinness Book of World Records on The New York Times bestseller list. Every package is worth at least twice the cost of the books, often up to 10x. More than $4,000,000 in prizes are up for grabs.

Every year, Guinness owns the NY Times list the week of 12/14. This year, I want that to change.

This is THE promotion for the book, and it will not be repeated. Pub day will not offer anything better. My World Series starts now.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

– For the NY Times, the book bonuses can only apply to HARDCOVER copies shipped to US addresses. Sorry!

– Copies of the new book will all ship starting 12/14. All bonuses will be delivered the week of 12/14 (digital) or the week of 12/21 (non-book physical goods).

– For the Barnes and Noble signed copies, it says “Signed Edition” on the “Overview” tab of the page.

– If you don’t need all of the books you buy, I am happy to donate the remainder to a worthwhile organization (library, school, company, event, etc.) on your behalf.

This giveaway lasts exactly 48 hours and ends at midnight on Sunday. It’s strictly first come, first served, and “limited to 5 spots” means the sixth person doesn’t get it.

PLEASE NOTE: THIS PROMOTION AND THE CONTEST ARE OVER. THANKS!

I hope you enjoy this as much as I enjoyed putting it together. Grab what you can!

Ready? Set? Go.

HeyTim

Of course I’m one of hundreds of thousands supporting your book launch for the sake of beating the Guinness Book of Records – I have a gripe with them as they denied our World Record breaking Dragon Boat crossing of the English Channel in 2007 because we didn’t have a head or tail on our boat!

(We would have sunk had we fixed those to our boat).

So go for it, That said do you really think an hour with you is priceless?

Valuable i’m sure but priceless?

Just did my best to get this promotion up on time. Not priceless for anyone, of course. The point being, just: I don’t usually sell my time. It’s not something you can buy. Not priceless in the “it’s worth $10,000,000,000+ for an hour with me.” Hope that helps…

Just to confirm an earlier comment:

Any online retailer is fine? Regardless of purchase country? If from a foreign country, do I need to still purchase through an American store?

Tim – I got a Kindle edition last week, canceled it today when I saw this post, but then I bought one again after reading the comment saying you will honor ebook sales. So I should be fine right? If not, I can still cancel that and buy a hardcover, but I’d rather not cause I’ve been in the process of cleaning house and getting rid of my physical books. Thanks!

CONTEST

Awesome promotion!

I created an extremely simple android application to promote the four hour body, exposing it to a further 300,000 new android devices every day. This took about an hour from design phase to uploading to the android market.

Over the first day with the only advertising being a wall posting on your official facebook page.

Downloads: 150

Affiliate link clicks: 80

Assuming 9500 (25 percent) of your facebook followers have android phones thats a .015 conversion to downloading the app, not bad when you consider you have to click to comments other than Tim Ferriss’s, which most people aren’t interested in, find the application and download it.

The affiliate clickthrough from a Buy now link in the application is 53% which is also a awesome conversion rate.

As an accidental side effect as of 12/9 the search “four hour body” ranked the application on the first page of google, just under all the dominant portals ie, your website, amazon and barnes and noble. When you consider this happened from an auto generated link (from indexing website androlib) and against websites which have taken serious effort to SEO optimize this is quite an achievement, and without SEO even being considered. I expect this to drop dramatically as other promotors SEO optimize heavily to get a share of this 4 million in prizes, but for no direct SEO effort still a good result.

Good luck with the launch!

Tim, if no one has suggested a non-profit to donate books too yet, I would like to throw my organization’s “hat in the ring”. We work to motivate wounded soldiers and teach transitional life skills. We use cutting-edge physical training (kettlebells, body weight training, Systema, and adventure sports) to motivate the body along with personal facilitation and mentoring to motivate the mind. Choice, challenge, and change are the keys – you use a similar ideal. We even have a school to teach our participants how to do this for other soldiers. Your book would be a great help to many of these wounded warriors—even better, come out and talk to them.

Tim,

Do you know the dates of your Q&A sessions yet? I will be in Antarctica until late Februrary, and may have trouble connecting, especially via Skype, or any other VOIP service (as the NSF wont allow their use – both a security and a bandwidth issue). If I am not able to attend my particular session, would it be possible to join in a later one if it coincided with my return? These sessions are obviously the most valuable part of your promotion, and are the only reason I would personally need 5 or more copies of your book (although I’ll have no problems finding family and friends to give them to).

Thanks Tim. Cheers, Mark

*CONTEST*

I’m going to keep it short and sweet. My approach is simple, and that’s to hit a niche that NEEDS this book. Others might use the same tactics that I’ll provide, but I can guarantee that their target market isn’t as strong as mine.

I’m a professional poker player, mostly online. And I know that my community is generally out of shape and would rather spend most of their time “grinding” for extra money. This market, mostly ages 18-28, do not adhere to the 9-5 and are looking for a lifestyle that you have paved the path for.

I’m only at the beginning stages of my muse, as a matter of fact I’ve finished 4HWW and started it a few days ago (website provided). Now while I can’t drive in enough traffic in the next 72 hours to sell 50,000 copies. I can’t refute that, but instead of focusing on short term goals, I’ll target long-term sustainability.

Plan for action:

[x] Post on my website promoting your book and why the poker community needs it. [Sales = TBA]

[x] Discussion threads on the most popular poker forums including twoplustwo, DeucesCracked, and Cardrunners (links can be provided if you’re interested in reading their thoughts). [Exposure = Priceless]

[x]Re-tweet for my poker followers.

[ ] 50,000 copies in 72 hours

[x] 50,000 copies over the next year

CONTEST

First of all, I say CONGRATS on an amazing idea. This is the type of thing I would be doing if I had your resources! I am envious at the level of grandeur of this whole promotion!

I am a 35-yr old out of shape actor/filmmaker who is in constant pain and can feel my body hating me for the bad diet and poor sleeping habits and lack of proper exercise. The 4 Hour Body is exactly what I have been waiting for! Being a professional filmmaker my first thought is to film everything… so I plan to do both a daily video blog as well as document the entire process of me following your advice to go from the fat, broken down, old-feeling 35-yr old to being the spry, exuberant, full-of-energy 35-yr old that I know I can be!

Great for you, because my before and after will be an excellent resource to show the results one can achieve. Great for me, because I can help get my body under control. I’ll have more energy to pump out more (quantity & quality) works and I’ll be able to get the roles that I want (leading man) as opposed to being stuck being the chubby buddy or homeless man on the street. My weight loss goal is 45 lbs… I hope to be able to discuss the whole process with you sometime.

I made the first feature length movie with an iPhone 4G, now I plan to make even more history along with you and your book!

Can’t wait to get the book and get started!

Just a heads up for UK (and I’m guessing, Europe) orders for the 5-Book promotion: Books-A-Million (booksamillion.com) are handling the shipping, and for international UK orders the shipping methods available to Books-A-Million are “Priority International Shipping (4 to 7 business days)” and “Fastest International Shipping (2 to 4 business days)”. I’m assuming they will opt for Priority International Shipping to save costs, so the books may arrive before the 25th, or at least sometime in December.

You can confirm what shipping method is available for your country by going through the order process on the website. If you’re lucky, the only available shipping method to your country could be “Fastest International Shipping” – you’ll essentially be getting free expedited international shipping.

I’m assuming booksamillion.com will honour their international orders and ship the books on pub day.

Hi, Tim

Sorry to ask this again. Normally I would wait, but the Giveaway is only 72 hours(24 of it already gone) and it takes some time to get a response. It seems the only way to get the prizes is to purchase “4 hour body” through EverBrite. Unfortunately this will make me miss out on the Signed copies at B&N. Is there a way I can get the order through B&N (getting the signed copies) and still get prizes ? or Would submitting B&N receipt do the trick ?

Thank you.

One thing, though–as of 4:25am Pacific Time, I still don’t have a notice about this post in my subscribed email. By the time I just happened to check in, there were 176 comments. Tim this is literally the best promotion I’ve ever seen. Its amazing. Your a marketing genius. You should really write the book “4 hour marketing: How to automate your marketing while you’ve already got the lifestyle and body of your dreams”

Pramit

Reply to  Niall

I doubt Tim will name his next book 4 Hour Marketing. Sitters will just hold onto this URL and (1) wait for him to buy it from them or (2) just drive traffic to advance their interests by leeching off of the Four Hour brand. The red herring technique (very clever) worked with the Four Hour Body, but I don’t know Tim will try that once more. Then again, it will seem like a discontinuation from the Four Hour series. I’m interested in what Tim will do about this.

On another note, I agree that this promotion is ridiculous. My mind literally blanked out when I saw this post. Kudos to Tim, he truly understands and caters to his audience. This offer will definitely convert (sorry, couldn’t think of a better word) people chilling on the fence.

My f-in god Tim. This is absolutely insane. You have the most ridiculous contest generating skills i’ve ever seen.

I honestly think you should just go ballistic with this book. You made a movie trailer thing for the book. Why not advertise that on national tv? I know, expensive – but seriously this book would become an absolute phenomenon if you did that. I wouldn’t be surprised if it became the best selling fitness/health book ever.

I mean you already have plenty of money, why not just go nuts spending money to promote this book in an absolutely epic way. I think it’s guaranteed that even if your in the red for a while you’ll eventually make profit.

I mean lots of people are still buying the four work week but I will tell you, the MAINSTREAM doesn’t really know a thing about it. Of course, the actual mainstream is not necessarily going to be ready for the concepts in the four hour work week but this four hour body book could appeal to almost anyone in the world.

Imagine if you had blockbuster movie level of advertisement on this book? You’d probably end up on the cover of time, newsweek etc. just based on the unprecedented advertising campaign.

I personally would just love to see that cause it would be grandiose as hell.

Yeah man, very few people seem to hit the tipping point of making something a mega phenomenon. Phenomenons and sensations are pretty widespread, for instance in music and movies… every year there’s always a good amount of releases that capture a lot of attention and a lot of sales. However it seems to only happen a couple times a DECADE that something comes out that gets taken to an absolutely epic level.

Eminem, Harry Potter, Lil Wayne, etc.

It seems like that just rarely ever happens at all with books. I don’t think book publishers are particularly good at advertising. If so, why would they continue to push writers to do book signing tours when they aren’t even that effective. You barely ever see books advertised on tv or in magazines.

It seems like the only way books sell a huge amount of copies is if they somehow catch the attention of a media outlet. For instance oprah, wired, rolling stones etc.

But unless something is literally pushed IN THE PUBLICS FACE it seems very rare that it will snowball into becoming a craze that all people and media are interested in.

That’s what happened with eminem. He came out as an outrageous character who captured the attention of the youth with his great rhymes and crazy style… but he also was backed by a huge marketing machine that invested massive amounts of money into causing him to dominate the attention of the media and the general public.

It just seems like once you reach a certain point where everyone is exposed to something in a way that makes them go “what’s that all about, that is intriguing and unexpected” the actual buzz itself seems to take on a life of its own beyond even the actual product. As in, at that point the worlds attention is captured simply because the product or person is making such a stir, regardless of what actually it is that they are doing.

I mean, how many people do you think saw lord of the rings, titanic or avatar just because EVERYONE went to see it, the media was constantly talking about it, and the production budgets were some of the highest ever, which in itself got them attention.

I mean I doubt lots of people started out having a high degree of interest in the actual story of the titanic. It’s just that you always go check out the thing that become an epic phenomenon.

No one wants to be left out of the loop on something thats capturing EVERYONES attention.

That’s why I think you should pull out all the stops and invest half your f-in fortune if you have to just to make this book hit the tipping point where no one can ignore it.

I don’t think i’ve EVER heard of a book which actually had a massive tv commercial campaign like they do with movies. That alone would generate interest by the media.

“For the NY Times, the book bonuses can only apply to HARDCOVER copies shipped to US addresses. Sorry!”

So no bonuses for non-US addresses? =(

I already sent my screenshot confirming 3 hardback copies bought from amazon.com to ship here in the UK. Can I (and others in a similar situation) still get your slow-carb cookbook?

Hey Tim,

Great stuff! Good luck on the launch. Really sucks that Canadians (and all other countries outside of the U.S.) are excluded from the bonuses. Hopefully that will change for the 3rd book! I would have bought the hardcover but I’ll have to settle for the kindle version instead. Anyway, love your stuff. Good luck!

Hi Blake,

I really wish we could do the world, but, alas:

– Many of the companies can’t afford to ship things overseas.

– The damn list only counts for US shipping addresses!

Next time 🙂

What about the digital items? If a Canadian ordered from the American Amazon site but it’s being shipped to a Canadian address, does that mean no digital bonuses?

Is the slow-carb cookbook book digital?

Yeah I realized…Was going to call a person I know in Arizona but somehow the question of “Can I send 30 books and loads of other stuff to your address for a few months” seems inappropriate haha..

I did order 3 though!

Ordered the 30 books deal — awesome. Will there be a link or form to indicate specifications for the bonuses (e.g., size of jeans, kettlebell weight)?

Hi Neil,

Thanks, man! Absolutely, we’ll figure out the specs next week, most likely. You’ll love the kettlebell. If you’re 140 lbs. plus and in decent shape (10-15 pounds of fat is fine), then a 24kg KB is usually appropriate.

More soon,

Hey Tim,

Great idea for marketing the book! I wish you luck on accomplishing your goal and I expect you to surpass the sales of the Guiness Book of World Records. If anyone could do it, it would be you!

I bought the 5 pack to help you out as much as I could and I am excited about all of the bonuses I will receive!

My website that I linked to my profile, is for the Big Brothers Big Sisters program! I volunteer for them and I think it is very important especially during the Holidays for the under-privileged children to have “somebody” in their lives to show them love! If you get a chance, check it out! Otherwise, have a great holiday 🙂

Hi Jonathan,

The endnote citations might clear up the calorie discussion, which gets dense. The endnotes (around 500 total) go live online once the book is out and feature the relevant sentences so you can find the references you’re looking for.

This question that brings up the most frustrating aspect of calorimetry, which caused a huge headache during book research: its variability!

Depending on how close you can emulate an isolated (or perhaps closed) thermodynamic system for incineration, which is how calories are calculated, the indices end up all over the map. I’ve seen the rooms and tools used, and if you use numbers from different algorithms, based on different assumptions, the math ends up making little sense. There are certainly charts that serve as the most standard references, but the overarching messages are the most actionable: diet is more important for fat loss than exercise (demonstrable from a longitudinal standpoint); and not all calories are created equal.

Hope that somehow helps. I’ll be writing more on this stuff soon.

Best,

Tim

NON-U.S. BUYERS can maybe ship books to a friend in the US to qualify? Perhaps even outsource the shipment of individual books: have all shipped to US dude (or dudette or business), who then sends them on to the folks on your Christmas or other gift list, using addresses and notes or cards you supply (or direct the preparation of).

Or just have the US dude/tte send the whole lot on to you. If separate billing/shipping addresses a problem, have a US buyer order for you–assuming Tim’s goodies are transferable.

Maybe Tim can weigh in on this?

Just double checking, re: shipping.

Eventbrite says:

“All bonuses will be delivered the week of 12/14 (digital) or the week of 12/21 (physical goods).”

Do the books purchased through eventbrite come through on the week of 12/21, or are they delivered seperately?

If I order the 5 book option through eventbrite, it states that the bonus materials will be shipped out the week of December 21st. However it does NOT specify when the books will be checked out. When will they be shipped out? I am based in Canada, and would like to receive them a week earlier to give out as Xmas gifts.

Tim- perhaps Hop Shop Go (co-owned by PayPal, I think) would be of use for your international readers? It’s a service that allows non-U.S. customers to shop online U.S. stores and have goods delivered to a U.S. address, who then collect them and forward them to wherever you live. Just a thought… http://www.hopshopgo.com/

Hi Tim,

Quick one:

1. if a book store buys say 1k books for resale, would that count?

2. trick idea: why don’t you use the money you earn from first 20k books sold to buy another 10k books privately and then sell them again, it will cost you zero, and your NYT score would go up by 10k books;)

Hi Jissus,

All non-fiction authors do promotions. This includes Guinness, which has an entire WEEK dedicated to it on Regis and Kelly. I’m using the tools as my disposal, just as they are. At the end of the day, I believe my content is better, but Guinness has far more resources than I do. If anyone is relying more with content, it would be me.

Hope that helps,

Hi Jonathan,

I would submit that it’s a bit different. I’d estimate 50%+ of the business book authors who hit NYT buy their own books and just put them in storage. I did not do that, nor do I plan to. I will ensure all books get into the hands of individuals. The goal, well beyond NYT, is a movement. For that, the books need to be in people’s hands. Hitting #1 NYT goes a long way to ensure the message is heard most widely.

Hope that helps!
