Random Episode 8 – 2010 Resolutions with Kevin Rose and Tim Ferriss

This new, long overdue Random episode covers our personal resolutions–personal, business, physical, and otherwise–as well as favorite recent gifts (both given and received).

The video is recorded on two cameras, including Glenn’s new experimental HD delight. Topics include:

  • Chocolate
  • Powerlifting
  • Filtering false friends
  • Funny hats
  • The art of the decline

    … and naked ladies.

Best to give the video 10-20 minutes to buffer before watching. It’s a big ‘un.

Please let us know in the comments what you’d like our next show topic to be! If you missed previous episodes, all of them can be found here.

Here are the links to resources mentioned in the video, provided courtesy of reader DynastyDC. Thanks, D! …

  1. Great video fellas! I decided that 2010 I’m going to create solid resolutions that I’d plan out and set short achievable goals to hit. I’ll definitely be using more of the 4-hour work week strategies to do this and can’t wait to achieve my dream life this year 🙂

Thanks for all you do Tim,

    Chris Hughes

  2. Nice one. Vitamin D is on my list as well. 🙂

Could you guys make sure to normalize the volume better next time though? I had to adjust a bunch of times during the video.

Happy new year, Tim and Kevin.

  3. Interesting about Vitamin D. From the sun you can get D from 11am to 2pm during summer. You might consider supplement, I’m using Usana Vitamin D supplement which has 1000 UI per tablet, very high quality. http://www.cdanjou.usana.com to get more info on D !

  4. Well done gentlemen. Great conversation on the vitamin D topic and filtering false friends.

Hell, it was all good. Take care.

  5. A blow up sheep in your sanctuary Tim? ..haha.. oh on the breathalyser, I was reading this hilarious article by Tucker Max just last week that you should check out. Just Google “Tucker Max The Famous Sushi Pants Story”. Anyways, nice video guys. It was fun watching.

  6. I agree, a cribs episode would be epic. Also, I’m interested in how you guys organize your lives. Specifically, incoming requests, mail, todos, and how you fit that into the broader picture. I know there is a post on organization by Leo, but I would be curious to see visually how you guys keep the seams from exploding. It would be a visual of tools and routines that you both use to be so effective.

    Thanks

  7. I would love to see TIM essential traveling tips- showing what tec he takes with him, where to book flights , hostels etc.

Would love to see your cool pad, I think it be great inspriation on how to livew a nice and productive life.

All the best tim, kevin hat suits you, and glen.

    Alex

  8. Great video as always Tim!

One thing i’d love to see is a cribs style tour of your home as mentioned, if you’re comfortable with it. I bet it would be really interesting.

  9. Haha these videos are great–the give you both more personal faces and are definitely effective with respect to developing your respective personal brands. I’d like to see an episode on each of your top ~5 “Best of the Web” whether its media, blogs, web apps, people, etc.

  10. great post. if any of you guys need a place to stay in Argentina, let me know. i have family down there that can really show you a good time. they’re great people. thanks again for the post!

  11. Hat looks great! Thanks for sharing! I think it is great to find ways of keeping our New Year’s resolutions.

Dark chocolate is the best! I don’t know if it is really good for your body, but it sounds like a wonderful idea!

  12. I LOVE these vids, I feel inspired to get back to implementing my ‘life changing’ muse and projects just by watching you guys have fun.

Ideas for the next random episode:

=1) A ‘cribs’ style Random with a tour of your house

=1) Thoughts on the future of technology and civilization (i.e. The Singularity)

    2) More on accelerated learning

    3) Top places to visit

p.s. Using Vimeo is a lot smoother for video playback regardless of size/length of video, in comparison to youtube.

  13. It’s nice to have such a good relationship with your friends…

Now about the topic, any topic would do really; I enjoy watching you guys speak about random things!

    Keep it up guys!

P.S Glenn, I’m so jealous of you getting the 5D MKII for Xmas! :p

  14. First of all, nice video though. I really like your Randow videos. I would like to see a Tim Ferriss participating in a Ironman Triathlon (doesn’t necessarily have to be the one in Hawaii since it is very hard to get a slot for 2010). Endurance racing is pretty much all about nutrition (during the race and during preparation period) so since you are very knowleadgable in this field (I heard you will write a book about nutrition) and a sports enthusiast that might be an interesting topic for you.

    Cheers

  15. I watched this when Kevin put it on his blog and it’s brilliant as always, made better because of the longer length and the fact that Glen got some talk time.

Not too fussy with the topics, just fun hearing about different resources and products like those Cordarounds pants (bit out of my price range unfortunately). Greater consistency with the schedule would be nice, but it’s fair enough that that’s not feasible.

Oh, and start uploading these to blip.tv! That way they can be downloaded as a podcast which would be great. Plus their video quality is comparable to a Vimeo.

  16. Hey Tim, great post. Actually headed to Hershey, PA tomorrow, hopefully they have some tastings around town.

Aside from the book, blog & general kick in the pants when I read your content, I must say the ‘Scandinavian After Glance’ has to be one of the best things I have learned from you, its toasting with Sisu!

I too have a 450-500lb dead lift goal this year. If I hit 450 by August, I will go for 500 by EOY. Check out Starting Strength for technique, or the Catalyst Athletics gym in Sunnyvale for 1:1 coaching if you want it. Unfortunately I just got petella-femoral syndrome, where my knee cap is not tracking correctly. This was from poor form on push presses(launching/landing on toes) on Dec. 23. Especially on DL’s, make sure your form is solid..

Aside from the DL goals for 2010; maybe have another kid, for my muse to earn $50K in 2010 and win the Store Contest!, be 150% of quota, finally get those tooth implants I have been putting off, complete 6 fully mastered songs, and last but not least… pay off my Amex for good.

  17. Another awesome Random episode. Tim, is there any chance you could list the links that are mentioned in the video? It would be a lot easier to just click a link rather than searching back through the video to find it.

  18. How about in the next episode Tim, you take Kevin into a gym & teach him the dead lift? His erectors probably rival angel hair pasta.

  19. Is that a hookah in the background?

I like the casual style of the video. Made me feel like part of an intimate group rather than a remote audience.

I would like to see more of your “sanctuary” as an episode. Will be interesting to see how it changes over the years as you get older and sitting on the floor on a pillow is on longer comfortable.

I’m not big on NY resolutions as I have ongoing goals at any given time. The DL in the book were helpful in breaking my goals down to shorter term, and combining my career and financial goals with my bucket list. Haven’t dug into the new book yet, but that’s coming soon.

  20. The best one yet, in my opinion. The more random and the longer the better.

Best wishes for 2010. Let us know when you hit that 3xBW DL.

    GM

  21. Hi Tim –

Can you tell me where you purchased the round chair in the background – looks like it has aluminum legs. Gracias.

    Mark

  22. Nice taste in hats tim you should certainly attire mr.rose more often. I approve lol.

Btw, concerning the d3 problem; I suffer pretty bad SAD and my gp here in the uk suggested a natural light box, it gives off the full light spectrum like the sun, so your body will produce seratonine etc. They’re not too expensive over here but I have no idea of what they will cost where you are.

Ha! New years resolutions- I’m trying my darndest to educate myself in Spanish and Japanese. So far so good but it’s only been 1 month. Do you have any advice on how to keep motivated/focused?

Thanks for another brilliant blog. I know this sounds pretty sad but I really enjoy hearing your opinions etc.

    Peace x

  23. I love these videos guys. They are probably as much fun to watch as they are for you to make. Keep up the great work!

  24. Kevin: hat, YES!

    beg, borrow, steal, acquire!

Vitamin D/A: their relationship is actually not as clear as indicated. check out this:http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2009/01/03/why-vitamin-a-may-not-be-as-useful-or-harmless-as-you-thought.aspx

Also, to not go D toxic (btw, i take 10,000-15,000 i.u. regulary, in a rainy land up north, and never toxic) get a baseline test and have your doc review every few months. re: docs, if you can afford it, find an integrative/environmental/functional medicine MD. Their parameters for “acceptable/normal” lab tolerances are much tighter and more. They also inquire into other deficiencies/toxicities/organ functions with tests a regular MD will not use. minus: rarely take insurance.

    personal note:

    Dear Tim,

I know this is going to sound odd, but I am a first-time entrepreneur and a (semi) longtime fan and I really really really want a signed copy of your new book! Although I have not performed the admirable feats of your other blog/Twitter/Facebook followers who acquired your trophies (I don’t live in SF, and I saw/jumped through the Facebook giveaway hoops some 100 + people too late), I am hoping you might reconsider, or at least delegate such consideration to an appropriate VA.

In the midst of a rather prolonged darkness in my life, your book is a special beacon of light for me. Since age 19, my life, health, and finances have been thrashed with undiagnosed Lyme Disease and exorbitatant non-insurance covered expenses. I am an artist, and due to this painful situation of illness, dysfunction and medical costs, I have never been able to really “go for it” with my art career. Finally diagnosed and starting to recover, I have been bewildered contemplating what I can do to be able to afford this insanely expensive slow-resolving health challenge. I discovered your book earlier this year, and its bold machinations for outwitting the system give me hope for affording medical care AND a well-heeled, art-full free existence once I am cognitively intact enough to pursue your formula. And I am getting close.

I can of course buy the book, but given the special personal attachment I have to its whip-smart ways outside the box, I would deeply appreciate a signed copy. It would be the superbest belated Christmas present ever!

Or, if you’d rather trade, my collaborative work with artist Joseph Mills is published as a limited edition art book that is now worth $150 though rare booksellers. http://www.topchoicebooks.com/servlet/Detail?no=169 for a veiled peek. Let me know if you care for a dedicated copy–they are all signed so I would have to give yours a special florish to make it a fair trade. 😉 Of course, now I know you are not overly art-centric…

If you do care to see the previous artworks/being of she who requests your special attentions, I am your Facebook fan, and my artwork is in my photo albums. I can be contacted for address info via FB should you deign to grant this request.

Thank you so much for being so generous with your time (and hopefully, for your book and your pen ink as well). I’ll still be a fan either way. 🙂

    Sincerely,

    elizabeth mars

  25. Hey,

just to say i felt like there were some sound problems in the video, like Rose’s voice was a bit looder than Tim’s and as well, when you guys spoke at the same time, then the average sound get quieter.

  26. As for chocolate, there is one state that grows cacao plant, and that is Hawaii. As Dole and the other pineapple growers have left Hawaii, they have been replacing the crops with Cacao. Very high quality and just a hint of pineapple in the background. While not on their website, every time my girlfriend goes to the big island, i have her stop at Kona Mountain Coffee store and pick up the Ali’i Dark Chocolates. Amazing quality, made in Kona and runs about $7.50 for 6 ounces. Of course head down to bayview farms for some of the best coffee (kona) in the world.

  27. Tim and Kevin,

Nice intro to 2010. I noticed the central placement of your kettlebell and wonder if you’ll talk about you RKC experience and if you’re still using your bell as part of your exercise regimen.

    Best,

    Jim Lane

  28. Hey Tim,

Great episode. Fun watching you guys. I’ll definitely check out the wine. I’m tentatively planning Argentina for about 3 months starting in October. Thanks for the inspiration.

And Tim, does you interest extend to Japanese swords as well or is your primary interest in saddles?

    Cameron

P.S. Kevin, hat looks sharp man.

  29. The “two crappy pages” reminds me how legendary screenwriter William Goldman once cured himself of a severe bout of writer’s block by writing a novel in which each chapter was only as long as his “juice” lasted. If he came up dry after only a paragraph, then that chapter would have to be only one paragraph long. The final book was 160 pages and 53 chapters. Since it was only an exercise to cure his writer’s block, he published it under a pseudonym, but it did get published with the title NO WAY TO TREAT A LADY, under the pseudonym Harry Longbaugh (which was the Sundance Kid’s real name; Goldman was researching his yet-to-be-written screenplay BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID). NO WAY TO TREAT A LADY was later made into a film starring Rod Steiger. (This is all related in Goldman’s book ADVENTURES IN THE SCREEN TRADE.)

  30. Kevin – I am here to help you with your chocolate resolution. I started a “bean to bar” small batch chocolate factory after 20 years as a criminal defense lawyer. I source all of the beans myself – profit share with farmers and put nothing in the chocolate but cocoa beans and organic sugar. I would love to send you some of our dark chocolate. How can I get some to you?

    Shawn Askinosie

  31. Hey Tim. This is kind of random, but just about five minutes ago I found out you’re a St. Paul’s alum. I am a current senior and a huge fan — it would be awesome if you came back to your alma mater for a visit and a chapel talk 😉

  32. Two observations, if I may:

    1. Viewers may appreciate your concern over length, but have no preference. No need for apologizing. Remember, that’s the beauty of video. We’re not waiting for you to “make your point”. We bow out when we’d like. You could go on for 60 minutes per without sacrificing any viewership.

    2. It’d be nice to have links to each product. I’m sure your back pack artist would appreciate it.

Great banter, loved the insights from both of you cool dorks.

  33. Good stuff, Tim.

One idea for your next show, in the same vein of the Vitamin D discussion in this episode. Look into the effects of rose bengal, especially on treating cancer. A company called Provectus Pharmaceuticals is doing some fascinating work in this arena.

  34. First, thanks for the heads up about buffering at the start.

I can’t wait for your next book and your next random vid.

I think I’m the fourth commenter to endorse the “cribs” tour. Please let us see your sanctuary. I was hoping that you would unroll what looked to be a very colorful rug behind you. It it from your travels? Is there a story connected with it?

  35. Hey,

    Enjoyed the video…

    Constructive criticism:

    1. The audio coming out from Tim’s side was substantially quieter than Kevin’s side.

    2. I prefer the brighter version of the video shoot.

All in all, content is incredible… awesome motivation for me and my goals.

Would love to hear more about some of the “qualifications” or “disqualifications” relating to people/girls that you use with people/friends. And the philosophies you have on how to tell someone is trustworthy.

  36. Tim- Do you ever read tmuscle.com? All of the top strength coaches, powerlifters, and strength athletes write articles for the site.

    1. Tnation has some great writing. I’ve read much of it since the beginning and read TC and some of the others even earlier in MM2000.

      Tim

  37. ps. regarding raw chocolate, the most deluxurious I’ve had is from Sacred Heart Chocolate, by Sacred Foods. My favorite: If you like bitter, the Amazonian Herbs one is power-packing medicine. It’s not for the faint-hearted but there are many other less challenging flavors to choose from.

You can google it or get it from the King of Cacao, raw foods guru David Wolfe’s commerce site: http://www.sunfood.com/Catalog/CategorySearchResultsView.aspx?CategoryId=0&SearchTerm=sacred+chocolate+bar&Cid=

Worth the price as a few bites go a long way.

btw, for some reason, I always group David Wolfe, Neil Strauss, Daniel Pinchbeck, and Tim in some elusive category in my brain for: Young Internationalizing Men Who Are Outside the Mainstream, Colorful,

    Smart-set How-To’ists / Writers / Thinkers / Lifestylists.

Check these provocative other writers out if you haven’t already. I can’t imagine they don’t already all know each other!

  38. 1. Wow I didn’t even know youtube supported 40 minute videos!

    2. Definetely do a MTV Crib’s Style Video Tour of your home. It would be really interesting.

    3. I really like your gadget, gears and gifts portion of your blog and videos I randomly google things to buy while reading and watching the vids on your site.

Thanks again for another good post.

    -Johnny Jen

  39. Great Video Guys…

Glenn – which camera footage was the new camera shot with? Was it the main footage or the darker switch over that you did? There was quite the contrast…

  40. I’m going to watch the video in a little bit as I fall asleep, but I’m still trying to stir up more interest in the Shopify forums for the contest… So here’s what I just posted over there. Come play with us, please! Share your ups and downs! Learn from us, let us learn from you!

I feel that one of the biggest challenges facing any eCommerce project is attracting sufficient traffic to sustain the business model. It seems this is particularly challenging for new businesses, and therefore seemed an appropriate topic to address.

It’s difficult to apply the Outsourcer Economics Profit & Loss spreadsheet (page 186 of 1st edition 4HWW – I don’t have the 2nd edition handy) until you know the following:

    1. The cost of driving sufficient traffic for your industry/product(s)

    2. What your conversion rate is

    3. What your average sale is (in instances where multiple products at different price points are sold or where customers could/would purchase quantities of a single product)

I know that micro-tests are supposed to help predict these values, but in my case there were way too many variables at play for me to reliably predict these things over a short period of time. The statistical significance just wasn’t there, and I kept changing/tweaking things which throws statistical analysis out the window anyway.

Here’s what I’ve found so far:

1a. I know how to do SEO decently, though it is rather tedious and laborious. I took the time to long-tail SEO about 160 products for Google Base, and I am steadily generating about 1 visit for every 4 products per day. In other words, I’m getting about 40 visits per day in organic search traffic from Google Base. I will soon be adding more products, and I am interested to see if this 1:4 ratio of traffic to product URL continues.

1b. I was a bit of an idiot with AdWords out of the gate. I let AdWords dupe me into thinking that I had to spend $1+ per click initially, because when I first launched my campaigns if I set the max CPC at a reasonable amount (<50¢) Google just laughed and refused to show my ads. At that time, I lacked the confidence in my ads to set a max CPC and stick with it, so I got burned when I raised the CPC enough to get my ads shown immediately. Turns out, I was just way too eager and impatient. Now, I set a realistic and sustainable max CPC and stick with it for a week. Sure enough, Google has come around and will show my ads. Still not as much as I'd like – my 'Impression Share' is not impressive, but at least the economics stand a chance to work and the business will exist long enough for me to worry about gaining Impression Share.

1c. I've been looking into affiliate networks, which are highly attractive because rather than the speculative nature of PPC, affiliates are paid a commission only when a sale occurs. However, most decent networks do have substantial initiation fees, so I am holding off on this for now. I can't set up an Amazon store because they aren't accepting apparel merchants right now. 🙁

1d. I've started a Facebook Fan Page – http://swimkitten.com/facebook – and plan to utilize it in the future with http://wildfireapp.com (Wildfire won't make much sense until I have a core following established). I will try to leverage the fan page for email subscriber signups by automatically displaying custom user acquisition content for non-fans and exclusive content for fans. I will implement that this week. I've just started leaving a few comments on fashion blogs, and am seeing a little traffic come in – enough to make me think it's worthwhile if I can just get into the habit of doing it and not let it take much time or effort.

    2. My conversion rate thus far is around 0.5%. I've calculated that at 0.5% conversion, 15¢ CPC and full-price items with paid shipping I won't lose money even if the total purchase price is small. However, some of the data that the 0.5% conversion is based on included free shipping and sales. So, I'm now holding my breath in the hopes that the improvements I've made to the site (added some reassuring content like security and privacy info as well as various other changes) will offset any decline in sales from eliminating free shipping and discounts. My page views per visit and other analytics stats have been decent, so I'm optimistic. I think I should be able to get my conversion rate higher over time as I improve the site, increase product offerings, implement customer feedback and establish a more trusted/attractive presence in the marketplace.

Hope this synopsis helps someone else! I wanna hear how other contest participants are getting on!

  41. Cool Rando’ – I missed the kettlebell in the background until the last few minutes…

How much of a strength increase comes from switching to the trap bar deadlift instead an alternating grip with an olympic bar? What kind of strength increase do you need to reach your goal off 500?

  42. Hey Tim,

Been following your blog for a while, and the book has helped me a lot. But If you want to know the best information on vitamin d and training in general, go to

    http://www.tmuscle.com/free_online_article/sports_body_training_performance_nutrition/d_is_for_doping

Tmuscle has helped me transform my body with its info, and i think itd be great for anybody to check out. Btw, im in no way affiliated with it. Its just a pretty strong community so I thought id tell you.

    Anyways take care.

  43. Thanks for talking about slowing down and appreciating things in the moment, alongside accomplishment. I’ve been doing this more and more lately as well. Also, the friends thing. I don’t have the same point of friends using me for things down the road like I assume you do, but there are similar things. Usually small things, but you know which friends are high quality, and which aren’t really that big in your life as far as meaningful relationship goes. Sometimes you just got to take the load off.

  44. I love Random episodes! I could watch one everyday. Tim, the talk of diving with Great Whites is straight off my Dreamline. Love it.

  45. Another great video. I have to agree with the comments about the lack of audio balance. I think it was more noticeable for me because I watched after I took out my contacts. (I’m not sure why)

  46. By the way, how do you manage to get a 39 minute video up on youtube? Is there some secret or are they allowing longer videos now?

  47. Kevin, an advice …if you want Jeniffer Aniston make a move, don’t wait to be called by a woman, especially by one who was with Brad Pitt.

  48. Great video Tim (& Kevin)

I would really like to see a MTV Crib’s style tour of your home. Kevin said you have a really cool home, full of cool stuff.

    Please share!

  49. Hi guys!

Great video and nice hat. Tims seem kinda warm thou…

Awesome about the chocolate testing, at last something I can give back to you!

I like chocolate. I love Pralus. Here’s a link for your conveinence: http://www.chocolats-pralus.com/index.php?pge=&lang=en

    My favourite is Madagascar.

Tim, the pyramide is a great birthday present for Kevin.

And I’m not affiliated in any way.

    Take care,

    Leif

  50. Loved the video. I would like to know what blood work you get regularly and what the most interesting/notable blood test you have ever gotten is.

  51. Here is a copy of my original comment I made earlier today. I’m not sure if it went through.

  52. As someone who recommended the vivo barefoot shoes, i’m glad you’re trying them out.

Slightly backhanded compliment here – In a lot of your writing the self publicising, self promoting vibe drives me nuts. What I love in these “random” vids is that aspect is gone. Your enthusiasm for this stuff shows through, you are clearly enjoying life and that makes me want to hear your thoughts far, far more than anything else.

  53. For those of you commenting about asking for top places to travel to or visit, there was an earlier episode filmed in China that tackled the top places both Tim and Kevin would suggest traveling to.

  54. Tim, if you ever want to actually *use* that hurling stick, let me know the next time you’re in Santa Monica. We can sharpen up your skills on the beach!

  55. Hey Tim,

I was wondering if you were going to say something in the video about the kettlebell. Anything interesting?

    Thanks

  56. Great stuff guys!! Chocolate is great.

I loved the video and it has 2 of my favorite things in the video 1) kettlebell and 2) a great red wine

    Awesome work

    Rock on

    Mike T Nelson PhD(c)

  57. Tim,

I like the youtube format of this edition because I can’t yet view vimeo on my ipod touch. (although I do like vimeo in general).

    Thanks as always.

    –J

  58. Really enjoying these Random shows. Keep it up.

I would suggest using Viddler instead, though, as you can easily place chapter markers for each of the major sections/points.

  59. Kevin Rose is hilarious… he got Glenn and Tim pretty bad on this video with the jokes about the circumcision and the blow up goat!

  60. Tim – Ute Fischer and Judith Orasanu have a good perception of the levels of mitigation (found in Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell).

  61. Kevin sensoring himself was great, but he blew it by saying “F’in oranges” anyway…

Listion guys: how about a resolution to stop using such ridiculous and offensive profanity in your everyday life. I stopped using such words over 12 years ago. Give it a try and see how often you catch yourself mindlessly using profanity, then you will start noticing other people using it, and it will start to annoy you.

Just a thought, and I do not in anyway deny the fact that we live in a great nation that pretty much allows you to say whatever you want to in any way you wish, I just can’t stand the amount of profanity that has sunk into our soceity.

    Cheers!

  62. I eat dark chocolate all the time, my favorite ones are:

    Dark Chocolate + Chili

    Dark Chocolate + Sea Salt

The last one is amazing and everybody gets always really surprise by its taste.

    You should try.

  63. Hi Boys

Can you do something about the speed of the video system you are using please? Random always stops every 10 seconds and as you can imagine takes a very long time to view – We are in Central Hungary working on our Muse with my wife and young family – having moved from Australia. Our website is above.

Drop in if you are in the area.

    Happy New Year

    Gordon

PS: Thanks for everything time – Save Ferriss

    PS: I have 100mps connection

  64. Tim’s into saddle art. Nice. Tim, I’d be happy to send you some of my artwork.

Next Episode: – Valentine’s Day (what are your plans?)

    – Tim’s Crib- hosted by Tim and Kevin

    – Hot spots in San Fran (hangout joints, lounges, galleries)

Since Valentine’s is coming up, I think it would be great for you guys to get creative. Have a Valentine competition (an e-Valentine perhaps), use roses in your vid, appeal to the ladies. 🙂

You guys entertain me while I’m working. Keep the videos coming.

    Cheers!

    Jaymie

  65. I’m a newbie to the Random Show…rockin good time to watch you guys and inspiring because it makes me realize if I will sit here and watch two guys I don’t know talk about random stuff for close to 40 min (and I of course and very busy and important 🙂 than probably people will listen to me too…so thanks for that.

Also, love the shout out about Vitamin D..I’ve been banging on that drum for over a year now.

Lastly, I love the intention to deliver serious information more lightly. This is something I’ve been focusing on lately, as well, and I find that when I’m able to lay some truth on someone like I’m talking about the weather, or even make it fun, we get much further. In the words of the great Mary Poppins, “Just a spoon full of sugar makes the medicine go down.” My mom also just recommended a book on this particular topic to me called Crucial Conversations: Tools for Talking When the Stakes are High that you might want to check out.

    Thanks for all you do!

  66. Hey Tim, this Christmas I gave 2 presents to my 2 real friends. I gave them each the 4 hour work week. The friend who picked it up right away and got hooked (much like myself) has become just as big a fan. We now refer to your book as “THE BOOK” and often ask ourselves “what would Tim say”.

    Thanks Tim.

    K

  67. Love the random episode!

I have some similar shoes Tim… They are patagonia shoes and I love them! they really don’t have a sole and are made out of like tree’s and other crazy things!

I also have a shirt that is made out of bamboo… not sure where I got it though because it was a gift!

Saw Daniel tosh live in ann arbor and he is one funny dude!

You guys are pretty cool… love the learning and sharing in the vid!

    Keep it up!

    David

  68. You should call these videos “The Ferriss Wheel.” They have their ups and downs and are quite enjoyable. The only problem is that it doesn’t include Kevin’s equally important contribution.

  69. Tim, you’ll probably be looking at going bigger budget – but if you want a cheap option for that Shark Dive – Flip makes a surprisingly durable underwater housing for their Flip Ultra model cameras. It’s good down to 30 ft, but I’ve read of people using it well beyond that. Just used it in Belize for snorkeling and loved it. Surprisingly good job not distorting the colors, no visibility limitations and full underwater functionality. Only word of caution is to be very mindful of the lack of image stabilization. Especially when under water.

The case is $35 on Amazon – http://bit.ly/7isAmq or $50 directly from Pure Video http://bit.ly/5YSncC – there’s a difference between 1st Gen and 2nd Gen flips so make sure you get the right housing.

Looking forward to the video if you do it!

  70. Love these Random videos – I love them all! You guys seem to value eachother a lot as friends which is really cool. I can’t wait for the next one.

Kevin – the hat looks good. Good luck with the pull up bar. Great exercise but TOUGH as heck!

Tim – Good luck in South Africa, I hope you document as much as you guys did your China trip. Are you that much of a surfer? I hear they had great surf but very sharky. I was out in the water in OR and a guy said he saw a fin about 20 feet behind me…very scary!

I just started reading your 2nd edition too can’t wait for superhuman! Especially because I tried the slow carb diet and it works!
